 “International Safety Management Code” means the International Management Code for the Safe Operation of Ships and for the Pollution Prevention.

The purpose of this code is to provide an international standard for the safe management of ships and for the pollution prevention.

International Safety Management Code includes:

2. Safety and Environment Protection Policy.

3. Company Responsibilities and Authority.

4. Designated Persons.

5. Master’s Responsibility and Authority.

6. Resources and Personnel.

7. Development of Plans for Shipboard Operations.

8. Emergency Preparedness.

9. Reports and Analyses of Non-Conformities Accidents and Hazardous Occurrences.

10. Maintenance of the Ship and Equipment.

11. Documentation.   

12. Company Verification, Review and Evaluation.

13. Certification, Verification and Control.

1. To ensure safety and security at sea.

2. To prevent human injury, loss of life and damage to the environment.

It’s an International Ship & Port facility Security Code

The main aims are to prevent:

 

1. Terrorists’ attacks.

2. Stowaways.

3. Sabotage.

4. Piracy.

5. Human injury.

6. Criminal activity.

7. Smuggling of drugs & weapons.

Security Levels

Security Level  1

 

-Visitor's ID check (Names to be entered in ship security log).

-Restricted access to accommodations of the ship.

-Search 1 person out of 8 visitors.

-In case of any supply (provision, spare parts, etc.), each unit / box should be checked as per invoice.

-Unaccompanied baggage is not accepted on board. (Only after 100% manual search).

-Selective check of stores/supply.

 

Security Level  2

 

-Visitor’s ID check (Names to be entered in ship security log).

- Restricted access to accommodations of the ship.

- Search I person out of 4 visitors. Search area can he established ashore at the gangway. All visitors are escorted throughout the ship.

- Deck patrol (as per Watch Plan, communication by VHF) frequent check of restricted areas.

- SSO conducts a security briefing to the crew.

- Master decides if the ship partly searched.

- Check of baggage (100%).

- Check of supply (50%).

 

Security Level  3 (danger is imminent)

 

- Cargo operations and receiving of stores to be stopped.

- All visitors should be disembarked (access on board only after SSO permission).

- Constant Deck Patrol.

- In case of discovering the suspicious things (bags, packages, boxes...) DO NOT TOUCH IT, immediately report to SSO (DO NOT USE VHF)

- Any other actions on Master’s decision.

WHO CAN CHANGE SECURITY LEVELS?

1. Flag State

Who is sso on the ship?

It is Master.

Who is back-up SSO?

It is Chief Officer.

WHAT DO YOU DO IF THere is security threat?

I am immediately to report to SSO and perform his orders.

You see unauthorized person inside the superstructure. What is your intention?

My first action is to stop him. Then I ask him what is he looking for or doing here. If I won’t get clear answering, I bring him out from the vessel.

WHAT IS SOPEP?

It is Shipboard Oil Pollution Emergency Plan.

Where is SOPEP Equipment?

SOPEP Equipment is in poop deck and fire store room.

WHICH WARNINGS SIGNALS DO WE HAVE ON BOARD?

1. General Alarm  7 short blasts and one long blast.

2. Fire Signal         Group of rapid rings for a period of 10 seconds.

3. Flooding Signal    Three long rings on general alarm bells.

4. Man overboard  I immediately shout “Man overboard!” and report to the bridge.

5. Abandon Ship     Only after Master’s order.

Fire fighting

There is the fire triangle which consists of three components: heat, oxygen, material.

 

When heat is increasing we may have the chain reaction that leads to fire.

Or the reason of fire may be a spark or a cigarette-end.

 

If we delete one of these three components, the fire will be extinguished.

There are five types of fire:
