The Rich Mix of Different People

A stereotype is a fixed set of ideas that is generally held about the          characteristics of a particular type of person, which are (wrongly) believed to be shared by all the people of that type.

Task 1.Write, what is your stereotype of a British person:

1. Do you think it is a dangerous thing to judge about a people or a nation by existing stereotypes?

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

2. How do you think you can better understand and appreciate the British character?

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

HOW MUCH DO YOU KNOW?

Task 2. Answer the questions:

1. How was the British nation formed?

2. Whom of the famous people of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland (of the past or present) have you read or heard about? How did Ireland (of the past or present) have you read or heard about?

3. Britain is a country where a lot of immigrants live and work. These are people of various origins. Do you know what countries they have mostly come from?

Task 3. Read this information about the four nations which form the British people. What explanation for their being distinct from each other can you give?

The British

« Rule Britania, rule the waves; Britons never will be slaves. » from the famous song by James Thompson

The four parts of the UK represent four nations which are distinct from each other in almost every aspect of life. They were different racially. The people of Ireland, Wales and highland Scotland belonged to the Celtic race, those in England and lowland Scotland were mainly of Germanic origin. This Difference was reflected in the languages they spoke, in their different economic, social and legal systems. The long centuries of contrast between the people of the four nations of the British Isles have limited their significant differences. But they have not completely disappeared, and the Welsh, Scottish and Irish people feel their identity very strongly.

England has always played the most powerful role in the history of the British Isles. That is why foreigners usually call British people «English» . But this irritates the 5 million people who live in Scotland, the 2.8 million in Wales and 1,5 million in Northern Ireland who are not English and who still feel different from the English.

Stereotypes are certainly not reliable descriptions of individual people but they still exist.

The Irish are supposed to be great talkers.

The Scots have a reputation for being careful with money.

The Welsh are renowned for their singing ability.

The English are individualists.

The British have a reputation for being conservative, have established values without questioning their validity.

Task 4. Read the following information and say in what things the British are different. What about Russians?

Being Different

The British have a strong sense of being different from others.

They don’t agree to change from driving on the left-hand side of the road to driving on the right

They continue to use double-deckers.

They stick to their own measurement system and continue system and continue to measure distances in miles (not kilometers), and yards (not in metres). They buy cheese in pounds and ounces, milk in pints, petrol in gallons.

The Rule of the Road

The rule of the road is a paradox quite,

In riding or driving along;

If you go to the left you are sure to go right,

If you go to the right you go wrong.

This is still the rule of Britain and Ireland. In most other European countries and in the USA, traffic keeps to the right.

Task 5.  The British still stick to some rules which are not observed in Europe. What are they? Why do you think the British do not want to change them? Are there serious reasons for that, or is it just their obstinacy, individualism, conservatism, or what?
