Super Farmers of the Future

1. What will farming be like in the years after the year 2100? Tractors that run without operators, the new generation tractors ere much faster and more powerful machines which can draw more implements than before, some farms use electronic eye machines that sow seeds into the soil pneumatically. The most important change will take place on tomorrow’s farm. It will be a very large “factory farm”.

2. Agricultural mechanization and electrification will greatly increase during next 30 years. There will appear six-wheel-drive tractors controlled by computers. The tractor will be powered by electricity from storage batteries. Tractor cabs will give air-conditioning for the operator, and will be equipped foodwater refrigerators. Machines equipped with electronic devices and computerized fingers will know when a crop is good for harvesting. Machines will harvest one crop and at the same time plant another.

3. Already much of the new equipment includes automatic control devices, and these will play a part in agricultural mechanization in the future. They open up whole new fields of development, such as automatic control of the environment for both crops and livestock. Mechanized stock-feeding and manure-handling systems are rapidly replacing hand-work systems. On modern dairy farms, collection and dispatch of the milk are normally press-button operations. In the future all the farms will be highly automated.

4. Farmers of the future will require special professional skills to operate the new equipment. The farmer himself will be very knowledgeable and well-trained in many subjects – among them electronic computers, biochemistry and biophysics.

5. The role of agricultural engineers in the future is great. They must know electronic computers, biochemistry and biophysics. The agricultural engineer will become the most important engineer in the world, the engineer of the highly automated “factory farm”. Engineers capable of designing, operating, controlling and adapting any form of electric energy to farm needs will be wanted by future agriculture.
