NHOC in West Coast Refinery Shock

The National Hermosa Oil Corporation (NHOC) officially announced yesterday that it intends to construct a $1 billion oil refinery on the west coast of the island. The project is expected to take five years to complete, with 2, 000 workers involved in its construction. The refinery when finished will employ 500 staff, easing the employment situation on the west coast, where tourism is at present the only industry.

Local residents are less optimistic. The head of the environmental group Green Action, Mr. Charles Chang, says that the prospect of large oil tankers unloading their cargo at the port is “alarming”. “We don't believe what NHOC and the Ministry of the Environment are telling us. We've already seen the damage that oil pollution can do in other parts of the world. And the idea of building the refinery in a national park is ridiculous. Sportsmen of Bashkortostan as well as students – sportsmen took part in many world champions hips for last three years.

Our sportsmen visited such countries as England, France, Germany, USA, Finland, Italy, etc.

In 2002 Bashkirian sportsmen participated in 177 sports and 391 tourist events. That very year 18 sportsmen of our republic were on summer. Olympic Games in Sidney and 14-in Salt Lake City.

Monopolies in the UK

Monopolies in the United Kingdom are strictly regulated by the state. Very often the decision as to whether a monopoly is useful or anti-social depends on circumstances and therefore varies from one period to another. Moreover, if legislation is proposed, the term " unfair competition" has to be closely defined in rigid legal terms.

Where the monopoly is detrimental to customers it can he prohibited by legislation.

When it is important not to destroy the advantages of a monopoly, the problem may best be solved by the state's taking it over completely. The public then appears to he effectively protected.

The state could reduce the period for which patents are grunted or make their renewal more difficult. Alternatively the state could outlaw attempts to eliminate competition, whether by unfair practices, the formation of cartels or restrictive agreements.

Current and Deposit Accounts

There are different kinds of bank accounts. The most popular is the current account. It pays no interest but it has other advantages. Firstly, it enables people to keep their money in a safe place. Secondly, it allows them to withdraw it at any time. Thirdly, it provides them with a cheque book so that they do not have to carry a lot of cash.

To open a current account it is necessary to see the branch manager. He has to decide whether the applicant is likely to keep the account in credit. A current account holder can only overdraw with the manager's permission. The manager will therefore want to meet the applicant to get the necessary background information. For example, he will want to know the applicant's occupation and place of work. He will also probably want a reference from his or her employer. If, after the interview, the manager is satisfied with the applicant he will approve the application, arrange for the applicant to be given a cheque book and arrange for a monthly statement to be sent to him or her.

A deposit account is another popular account. It has advantages over a current account. First of all, it is easier to open a deposit account than a current account. There is no need to see the manager. A customer only has to fill in a form and then deposit the minimum amount of money required by the bank. The customer is then given a pass book which he must bring to the bank every time he wishes to withdraw or deposit money. The pass book is customer's record of the account. Secondly, a deposit account earns for the customer.

The bank invests the money that the customer pays in and in return, the bank pays the customer interest. The rate of interest in the UK is not fixed but it is usually between 5-10 %. However, a deposit account has certain disadvantages too. In the UK at the moment the maximum a customer can withdraw in one day is 20. Another disadvantage is that the customer receives no cheque book and therefore he cannot pay bills so easily.

The Earth is My Home

The six continents of the Earth with big and little islands make only 30 per cent of the Earth's surface. The names of the six continents are: Eurasia (Europe and Asia), Africa, North and South Americas. Australia and the Antarctic. On a cosmic scale our planet is certainly a vcfy-very little place.

How is our little planet living nowadays? What problems is it facing and what problems are the Earthman facing? As a result of the technological progress and great needs of the peoples in minerals and water, the face of the Earth is changing day by day and nor to the good.

The ecological problems we are facing are really great and difficult to solve. There is au English song which sounds like this:

" What are they doing to our land, my friend? What are they doing to the deep seas and oceans? What are they doing to the fresh water lakes and rivers, my friend?... etc"

T he answer to these questions may, really, be very sad.

Our generation must not be so egoistic. We must think of our children, grandchildren and grandgrandchildren as well. We really haven't got much fresh water on the Earth. as well as minerals. We must protect nature from people's egoism.

What problems are the peoples of the five continents discussing now? The principal problem is the classical one War and Peace problem. The discussions on this problem are taking place on all levels here and everywhere on our planet. State political leaden, and scientists as well as common people of the five continents are thinking day and night about one and the same -" peace or war? " They are thinking over this problem inside their states and out. north and south, cast and west from every point of view. This problem is exactly what we think about it next world war may well be the end of our planet.

If we want to be intelligent beings, as we say about it in our message to cosmos, we must protect and save this, perhaps, the only Oasis of Life in our Universe.

Britain's Shame

The number of people out of work, according to the recent report by the Department of Employment in the UK is 3.062m. And it is still rising.

The academic study by David Dickinson, a Cambridge economist, shows that the south of England is suffering more than the north: manufacturing more than services, men more than women, blacks and browns more than whites, the young more than the middle aged.

The Government claims that there is no direct link between rising crime and high level of unemployment. But the study shows a close association between jobless and the number of the young offenders.

Foreign Exchange Rates

The foreign exchange market is the market in which the currencies of different countries are exchanged for one another. The foreign exchange market is made up of thousands of people all over the world - importers and exporters, banks and specialists in the buying and selling of foreign exchange called foreign exchange brokers.

The foreign exchange market opens on Monday morning in Tokyo, when it is still midnight on Sunday in London. As the day advances, the foreign exchange market also opens in Zurich, Frankfurt, London, New York and finally in Vancouver and Los Angeles.

Before these last two markets have closed, Tokyo is open again for the next day of business.

The price at which one currency exchanges for another is called a foreign exchange rate.

In the UK there are three possible foreign exchange rate regimes, they are fixed exchange rate; flexible- (or floating) exchange rate; managed exchange rate.

Under a fixed exchange rate regime, the value of the pound would be pegged by the Bank of England. Under a flexible exchange rate regime, the value of the pound would be determined by market forces with no intervention by the Bank of England. Under a managed exchange rate regime, the Bank of England would intervene in the foreign exchange market to smooth out fluctuations in the value of the pound but it would not seek to maintain the pound ut an absolutely constant value for a long period of time.

For the 2-nd course Russians eat different kinds of salad (meat salad, fish salad, vegetable salad), fried, boiled or stewed meat or fish. At times we cook a roast chicken, especially on holidays.

For the 3-d course (for dessert) we have a glass of juice, a piece of a cake or a pie (cookies) if we aren't on a diet. A lot of people eat ice-cream, fruit and berries for dessert (pineapples, tangerines, apricots, cherries, mangoes; strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries and etc.). In summer everybody adores to have a piece of melon or a water-melon).

In the evening we have supper. Some people prefer mashed potatoes with pickled or fresh vegetables, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, onions (leek). Others eat stewed cabbage with a beefsteak or fried liver or kidneys. Russians also like stuffed peppers, tomatoes, squashes, potatoes. A special Russian dish is “pyelmeni”, a kind of ravioli - small cases of pasta containing chopped meat.

After that we have a glass of milk or stewed fruit with biscuits, crackers, or sweets (candies). But if you are thirsty you drink a coke, lemonade, some beer or even champagne.

To be a designer is attractive too. This profession can fit creative people who know how to make things around them look nice.

For those who choose the profession of a chemist, a mathematician or a physicist the main factor is not prestige but interests and inclination.

To be a biologist is very prestigious today, because biologists are at the forefront of cloning.

I think that to be a sociologist or psychologist is very interesting and useful too. Psychologists try to help people to cope with their spiritual problems. Sociologists study the health of the society. One of the most fashionable and prestigious professions today is that of computer operator.

We are moving to the creation of law-governed state. This movement is accompanied by a cardinal updating of all basic branches of legislation. Radical changes take place in the entire law-enforcement mechanism of Russia in the work of the courts, the prosecutor's office, the legal profession, arbitration, militia and correctional labour institutions. These changes are to become an important step towards the law-ruled state. Special responsibility belongs to those who are in the legal profession: judges, lawyers, investigators, prosecutors. High demands are made of judges professional and personal qualities. A judge should always be a person with a sharpened sense of justice, a broad horizon, a person of high moral qualities. The role of lawyers is rapidly growing in our country.

As for me, the older I am, the more often I'm thinking of how difficult and important it is to be a high qualified lawyer.

Inflation

Inflation is generally defined as a persistent rise in the general price level with no corresponding rise in output, which leads to a corresponding fall in the purchasing power of money.

In this section we shall look briefly at the problems that inflation causes for business and consider whether there are any potential benefits for an enterprise from an inflationary period.
