A whale of a day

I guess it was just something I had always wanted to do; I mean, swim to the islands of with whales. Tonga, which is one of the very few places left in the world where you can legally swim with them. I literally took the plunge and had an amazing time with the truly wonderful, spectacular love-song-singing humpback whales. Words cannot express how much I respect and adore them!

The humpback whales sing songs that are probably the most elaborate in the animal kingdom; they can actually reach an ear-shattering one hundred and eighty-five decibels and carry more than sixty miles through the ocean. In fact, they have a seven-octave range and use rhythmic variations in their grunting, clicking and groaning songs that are astonishingly similar to human composition. The friendly whales are mainly found at a place called Vava’u, an island group about a hundred and seventy miles north of Tonga's capital. It's a maze of about forty, mostly uninhabited hilly green islands encircled by aquamarine coral reefs. So even if you aren't interested in whale-watching, the lush scenery of the islands deep in the South Pacific makes the trip more than worth it.

I remember exactly how I felt as I slipped into the clear blue water after donning mask, snorkel and fins. I could say that I was literally aglow with delight at the sight of a courting couple I mean whales, not humans!

This kind of compensated for the heart-in-the-mouth feeling I had initially felt at the start of the short boat trip to where the promised whales would be. Anyway, we had watched the male, called a bull, a little bit earlier. He had breached only about a hundred yards away from our boat, exposing the thirty or so long, expandable grooves on his neck. These allow the humpback to gulp tons of krill (a sort of shrimp) at a time. I later spied him at the bottom, his body at a forty-five degree angle, his head pointed at the ocean bed. My companion and guide told me he was lovesick and was singing a love song to any available female. Nature works in an amazing way and his song seemed to work, for the next minute a female swam up and blew a triumphant spurt. I felt quite delighted for him. They both threw me a cursory glance before fading away, completely absorbed in their courting. The experience can only be described as breathtaking.

Perhaps it was the grace with which a mother and calf swam into view that filled me most with awe. I remember her as being over fifty feet long. She probably weighed more than thirty tons and nestling protectively against her forehead was her pale-skinned calf, eyeing me suspiciously at first. The mother resembled a jumbo jet drifting across a blue sky, its pectoral fins stretched out on each side like wings, with a huge barrel-bellied body, black on top, pale cream underneath, tapering to broad, dark flukes. The behavior of offspring has always fascinated me, no matter the species, so it was delightful to watch as the calf performed playful somersaults, and then swam beneath its mother to feed, eagerly suckling milk. This milk helps the calf put on twenty-five kilos a day as it contains ten times as much protein as cow's milk. Anyway, I guess we were equally captivated as we looked into each other's eyes. Suddenly, smart humpback mother surged forward with a flap of her huge flukes, using the pressure from the water she disturbed in front of her to nudge junior away from me. I guess it was the signal that playtime was over. With an audible click, the mother signaled to the baby to move into a protective position below her chest, with just its head poking out. Swiftly, they pulled away and disappeared into the clear warm waters of the islands.

I always dread reading in the newspapers one day that humpback whales are on the endangered species list, and I'm probably over-reacting since their numbers have swollen to about twenty thousand from the five thousand that had remained of an original quarter of a million. It seems that some hunting bans are paying off.

I guess that life for a baby hump- back whale is not always so peaceful since the calves are hunted by killer whale packs as mother and young make their epic journey back to the Antarctic, where they have to survive turbulent seas, icebergs and even more killer whales. That is until their return some months later from the summer feeding grounds to the warm seas of the Pacific where they give birth and delight people like me.

My postscript to all this is that now I feel an immensely close bond with Tonga. I return whenever I am able; there I find the opportunity to reflect on issues of a less personal nature and concentrate on one nature's great creations - the whale.
