 I am Nikita Tantsevov. I am 23 years old. I was born in Sevastopol. I live here all my life. I am single. At the end of school I realized that I want to become a sailor, like my father. I entered the Sevastopol Naval Academy of name P.S. Nakhimov. Now it is named Sevastopol High Black Sea Naval Institute. I graduated it one year ago. I have never been at sea. I got all needed documents and certificates and I want to go to the sea as Deck Cadet or as Ordinary Seaman.

What do you know about ism-code?

 “International Safety Management Code” means the International Management Code for the Safe Operation of Ships and for the Pollution Prevention.

The purpose of this code is to provide an international standard for the safe management of ships and for the pollution prevention.

International Safety Management Code includes:

1. General.

2. Safety and Environment Protection Policy.

3. Company Responsibilities and Authority.

4. Designated Persons.

5. Master’s Responsibility and Authority.

6. Resources and Personnel.

7. Development of Plans for Shipboard Operations.

8. Emergency Preparedness.

9. Reports and Analyses of Non-Conformities Accidents and Hazardous Occurrences.

10. Maintenance of the Ship and Equipment.

11. Documentation.   

12. Company Verification, Review and Evaluation.

13. Certification, Verification and Control.

COMPANY POLICY

2. To prevent human injury, loss of life and damage to the environment.

It’s an International Ship & Port facility Security Code

The main aims are to prevent:

 

1. Terrorists’ attacks.

2. Stowaways.

3. Sabotage.

4. Piracy.

5. Human injury.

6. Criminal activity.

7. Smuggling of drugs & weapons.

Security Levels

Security Level  1

 

-Visitor's ID check (Names to be entered in ship security log).

-Restricted access to accommodations of the ship.

-Search 1 person out of 8 visitors.

-In case of any supply (provision, spare parts, etc.), each unit / box should be checked as per invoice.

-Unaccompanied baggage is not accepted on board. (Only after 100% manual search).

-Selective check of stores/supply.

 

Security Level  2

 

-Visitor’s ID check (Names to be entered in ship security log).

- Restricted access to accommodations of the ship.

- Search I person out of 4 visitors. Search area can he established ashore at the gangway. All visitors are escorted throughout the ship.

- Deck patrol (as per Watch Plan, communication by VHF) frequent check of restricted areas.

- SSO conducts a security briefing to the crew.

- Master decides if the ship partly searched.

- Check of baggage (100%).

- Check of supply (50%).

 

Security Level  3 (danger is imminent)

 

- Cargo operations and receiving of stores to be stopped.

- All visitors should be disembarked (access on board only after SSO permission).

- Constant Deck Patrol.

- In case of discovering the suspicious things (bags, packages, boxes...) DO NOT TOUCH IT, immediately report to SSO (DO NOT USE VHF)

- Any other actions on Master’s decision.

WHO CAN CHANGE SECURITY LEVELS?

1. Flag State

Who is sso on the ship?

It is Master.

Who is back-up SSO?

It is Chief Officer.

WHAT DO YOU DO IF THere is security threat?

I am immediately to report to SSO and perform his orders.

You see unauthorized person inside the superstructure. What is your intention?

My first action is to stop him. Then I ask him what is he looking for or doing here. If I won’t get clear answering, I bring him out from the vessel.

WHAT IS SOPEP?

It is Shipboard Oil Pollution Emergency Plan.

Where is SOPEP Equipment?

SOPEP Equipment is in poop deck and fire store room.

Fire fighting

There is the fire triangle which consists of three components: heat, oxygen, material.

 

When heat is increasing we may have the chain reaction that leads to fire.

Or the reason of fire may be a spark or a cigarette-end.

 

If we delete one of these three components, the fire will be extinguished.

There are five types of fire:

 

MARPOL

ü It’s an International Convention on Pollution Preventing from vessels.

ü MARPOL includes 6 annexes.

ü The main point is that it’s forbidden to discharge bilge waters into straits, gulfs, channels, port water areas and special areas. (It’s below 62 degrees in Antarctica area.)

ü  It’s forbidden to discharge bilge waters into the Black sea, Red sea, Baltic Sea and Mediterranean Sea.

ü No less than 60 miles from the shore it is allowed to discharge bilge waters.

ü It’s also forbidden to throw away plastic and all kinds of bottles, food waste products in a sanitary zone - it’s 12 miles to the shore.

ü When running to the territorial waters it’s necessary to turn off and seal valves because leakage is possible.

 

SOLAS

OS Duties

At Sea:

Under conditions of restricted visibility or congested waters, or as required by the Master, he will be responsible to the Officer on Watch for:

 

ü bridge lookout.

 

ü the steering of the ship as directed by the Officer on Watch or the Master.

 

ü general bridge duties.

 

ü any other duties assigned to him by the Officer on Watch or the Master.

ü I must adopt the safe working practices.

ü I must perform any other duties, assigned to me by the Contract.

STCW

 

ü It’s the International Convention of Seafarers' Training, Certification and Watch keeping -1978, amended by the Protocol of 1995 (STCW 78/95).

 

ü It sets the basic teaching and training for all crew members and contains minimum standards of competency for seafarers of all specialties.

 

ü STCW-code also sets the order of issue and acknowledgement of working diplomas and certificates.

ü By the standards of training seven basic functions are defined in the fields of management, operation, support and maintenance of the ship:

1. Navigation.

2. Cargo handling and stowage.

3. Marine engineering.

4. Electrical, electronic and control engineering.

5. Radio communications.

6. Maintenance and repair.

7. Controlling the operation of the ship and care for persons on board.

 

ü The responsibility of the crew members is defined on three levels:

1. Management level (Master, Chief Mate, Chief Engineer or Second Engineer on board of seagoing ship).

 

2. Operational level (all Master’s Mates, Engineers, radio - operators, persons in charge of navigational or engineering watch and persons in charge of servicing a ship and cargo operations).

 

3. Support level (all ratings in charge of navigational or engineering watch, watch in port, cargo operations, servicing a ship, etc.).
