Both modal verbs have some meanings of their own and some meanings in common.

Both Can and May express the following attitudes:

I. Possibility – возможность (e.g. One can meet a lot of Russians in New York; One may meet a lot of Russians in New York). The translation is – можно.

 

2. Permission – разрешение (e.g. Can I go now? – Yes, you can; May I go now? –Yes, you may.) The modal verbs in this meaning correspond to – можно.

 

3. Ban – запрет. This meaning is found only in the negative forms of modal verbs (e.g. You can’t bring it to class; You may not bring it to class). In this meaning – can’t – is usually translated as – нельзя, and may not as – не смей.

 

4. Reproach – упрёк. The meaning is found only with the forms could and might (e.g. You could have told me about it; You might have told me about.) The translation is – мог ( ла ) бы .

Study the table

1. May – expresses permission (можно) in the positive and in the interrogative form and ban ( запрет) in the negative.

You may take my pen.(можете)                                                  You may not touch it.(нельзя)                                                  May I come in? (можно?)

2. In the reported speech you are to use – might – instead of – may. e. g. Mother said that I might go out.

3. Might – can also express reproach – упрёк – in the meaning of – мог ( ла ) бы.   e. g. They might have announced about the cancellation (отмена) of the match.

4. The negative form of – may – isn’t only – mayn’t (нельзя), but also – mustn’t. e. g. May I smoke here? No, you mayn’t.  No, you mustn’t.

5. In the meaning of supposition – may – is translated as (может быть) into Russian and can be used next to the bare forms of the indefinite, continuous, perfect and perfect continuous Infinitives, though it expresses a less share of assurance than – must – in the same meaning. Next to the form of the Indefinite Infinitive – may – expresses supposition on the account of the present and future activities.

It may rain soon. (Может быть будет дождь.) He may be visiting his parents. (вероятно) He may have been walking in the park for an hour already. (вероятно) He may have lost his key. (может быть) He might have lost his key. ( вряд ли) It might rain soon. (Маловероятно, что будет дождь)

Analyze the meaning of the verb may. Translate the sentences into Russian.

 1. May I invite Nick to our house? 2. Don’t go to the wood alone: you may lose your way. Have you settled yet?” 3. He said I might come to him any day I liked. 4. I asked if I might bring my wife down next Saturday. 5. If he walks from the station, he may arrive in the course of the next half-hour. If he drives, he may be here any moment. 6. “May I look around?” he asked. 7. It was some special occasion. I don’t remember what. It may have been my birthday. 8. He may not have learned the news, that’s why he looks as if nothing had happened. 9. Of course, I am too young but I try hard, and one day I may achieve something.

 

Translate into English.

1. Можно мне войти? 2. Можно, я пойду гулять? 3. Если твоя работа готова, можешь идти домой. 4. Учитель сказал, что мы можем идти домой. 5. Доктор говорит, что я уже могу купаться. 6. Папа сказал, что мы можем идти в кино одни. 7. Я думал, что мне можно смотреть телевизор. 8. Если ты не наденешь пальто, то можешь заболеть . 9. Не уходи из дома: мама может скоро прийти, а у нее нет ключа. 10. Будь осторожен: ты можешь упасть. 11. Не трогай собаку: она может укусить тебя. 12. Мы, может быть, поедем за город в воскресенье. 13. Он может забыть об этом. 14. Скоро может пойти дождь.

To be allowed toV – an equivalent of – may.

To be allowed toV is an equivalent of the modal verb – may. It expresses the permission and is translated as – разрешать.

We are allowed to stay at home. (нам разрешают) We were allowed to stay at home. (нам разрешили) We shall be allowed to stay at home. (нам разрешат)

Translate into English

1. Мне разрешают пользоваться папиным магнитофоном. 2. Дети уже большие. Им разрешают ходить в школу одним. 3. Ему не разрешают купаться в этой реке. 4. Вчера ей позволили прийти домой в десять часов. 5. Нам не позволяют разговаривать на уроках. 6. Тебе позволили взять эту книгу? 7. Я думаю, мне не разрешат поехать с тобой за город. 8.
