CAJAMARCA – PROTECT THE HERITAGE AND THE CULTURE OF THE COMMUNITY

CAJAMARCA

12/07 – 02/08

RENO

VOLS

PROJECT

Cajamarca is very attached to its historical and cultural heritage. For that reason this year the municipality launched an ambitious plan of conservation and valorization of the historical center.

Our project aims to collaborate to that process under the flag of the World Heritage Volunteers initiative 2018.

The main goal is to work on the renovation of the house of Toribio Casanova, illustrious founder of this city, in order to transform it in the museum of culture and identity of Cajamarca, a center for the promotion of the history and the heritage of the town.

The idea is to develop a multidimensional approach, combining manual work, rising awareness actions, cultural exchanges, development of competences in the renovation crafts and touristic valorization.

The Cajamarca Branch of the Brigada de Voluntarios Bolivarianos del Perú (BVBP) is happy to welcome the volunteers willing to help in the valorization of our beautiful cultural and historical heritage.

WORK

OBJECTIVES:

The objective of the workcamp is to participate in the renovation of the ancient Casona of Toribo Casanova and to develop a dynamic of sensitization around the heritage conservation

ACTIVITIES:

The volunteers, under the supervision of a technical leader, will participate to all the necessary works to restore the house of Toribio Casanova: cleaning, renovation of the walls, construction of carpentry and reproduction of the original decorations.

In the afternoons the participants will take part to classes offered by the Restoration Workshop School of the municipality of Cajamarca to discover the arts of renovation: stone cutting, carpentry, blacksmithing, archaeological conservation and gardening.

The participants will carry out actions to raise awareness on heritage conservation based on non-formal education tools in educational centers and schools. They will organize also animations and parades to inform the community about the work done.

The field will end with the organization of a fair to show the results of the volunteers work to the inhabitants of the city.

ACCOMMODATION AND FOOD:

The participants will be accommodated in the historic center of Cajamarca. The facilitie offers basic services: water, electricity, laundry. The participants will sleep in shared rooms and will have to bring their own sleeping bag. The volunteers will receive food and will have to take care of cooking and cleaning activities. Do not forget some traditional, typical foods, drinks and recipes from your country of origin for the international evening.

LOCATION AND LEASURE:

If Cajamarca is a small city, it can offer several archaeological and natural tourist attractions, like the Cerro Santa Apolonia, a viewpoint dominating the town where you can sit on the ancient “Inca chair”, a recreational center with thermal waters (where the Inca Atahualpa bathed) and also the rescue room that was filled once of gold and twice of silver for paying the freedom of Atahualpa, in vain

Just 45 minutes from the city of Cajamarca you can visit the Chetilla and Porcon communities, that are still maintaining the original language of Quechua and their ancestral customs such as bartering, minga. etc.

You can also discover pre-Inca ceremonial centers like Cumbe Mayo, where you can see ancient hydraulic system and a unique engineering still working nowadays, cave paintings, a stone forest and a museum site.

It is also possible to trek on the Inca Trail, visit Llacanora Falls, and bate in one of the largest lagoons in the north, Laguna de San Nicolá s.

SPECIALS REMARKS:

Bring a warm sleeping bag, working clothes, gloves and shoes, warm and rain clothes and a flashlight. Everybody must, in any case, bring their insurance certificate. If health issues happen on the project, volunteers will have to pay for it, and then be reimbursed once back in their home country.

MEETING POINT:

You can flight from Lima to the Aeropuerto Mayor General FAP Armando Revoredo Iglesias (CJA). The meeting point is the 12 of July at 4 PM at the arrival terminal. The camp leader will collect the group and then move by public transport to the town center.
