Which student would you accept?



 

Pretend that you are the admissions committee of a prestigious university, and you are deciding which applicants to accept. Admissions committee considers many different factors (column 1). Which considerations are the most important?

 

Below are three applicants. Discuss the qualifications of the applications and decide which of three you would like to accept. Present your choice, giving explanations.

* SATScholastic Aptitude Test отборочный тест, проводимый централизованно Советом колледжей (College Board). Предлагается абитуриентам и студентам, в том числе иностранным, при поступлении или переводе в американский колледж или университет. Предусматривает стандартную систему оценки способностей к тому или иному виду образования. Определяет знание английского языка (грамматики и лексики) и математики в объеме средней школы (high school). Соответственно, состоит из двух частей (максимальное число баллов по каждой - 800). Ежегодно такой тест проходят примерно 1,6 млн. выпускников средних школ, рассчитывающих продолжить свое образование в колледже или университете.

 

** GPA Grade Point Average (средний балл) – характеристика успеваемости учащихся, определяемая путем деления суммы оценочных баллов (honor points) на количество затраченных зачетных часов (credit hours). Обычно буквенное обозначение оценки соответствует определенному числу баллов, например [A] = 4 баллам, [B] = 3 баллам, [C] = 2 баллам; таким образом, при двух оценках [A] и одной [B] средний балл учащегося равен (4+4+3):3 = 3,7. Listen to the VOA (Voice of America) radio experts talk about some popular slang phrases. Mark if the statements are True or False.

 

a. The word Hella means Very.

b. Tight doesn’t mean trendy or impressive or interesting among the youth.

c. Chill doesn’t express unpleasant coldness in college slang.

d. Sick is a positive word.

e. Cool is not a fresh expression.
