There are smart phones. There are smart watches. And now, there are smart collars for dogs and cats.

Some of the latest collars use technology to track your pets’ health. The collars can check for fever. They can check heart rate. They can check breathing. They can even tell if your pet is in pain.

PetPace and Voyce are two brands of smart collars for pets. Dogs and cats that weigh more than 8 pounds can use them.

The PetPace collar tracks vital signs like heart rate and breathing. It checks for signs of pain. If something is wrong, owners get a message by phone, text, or e-mail.

The Voyce collar works much the same way. There is also a Voyce Pro collar that animal doctors, or vets, can use. They can use it on pets that have just had surgery. They can also use it on pets with long-term illness.

Both collars can be set to check for signs of an illness.

Kenneth Herring lives in Michigan. His 5-year-old dog, Jack, has epilepsy. That means he gets seizures or shaking fits. During a seizure, Jack falls over. He might faint.

Herring uses a PetPace collar on Jack. He’s helping to test the collar. Makers want to know if it can pick up signs of epilepsy.

So far, the collar has alerted Herring when Jack’s limbs shake or he stops moving.

The makers of PetPace hope to improve the collar for other dogs with epilepsy.

Michelle Saltzman uses a PetPace collar for her dog Lucas. He is a 10-year-old beagle. He has a heart problem. Sometimes he faints. Saltzman has to leave Lucas alone when she works. The collar helps her worry less.

12. PetPace collars cost $150, plus $15 a month. Voyce collars cost $200, plus $9.95 a month. You can buy both collars online.

The PetPace collar came out three years ago. It has been tested on thousands of dogs. The Voyce collars are newer. They came out in the spring and summer.

In Nairobi, Kenyans Can’t Get Enough of

Roller Skating

In Nairobi, Kenya, roller skating is all the rage. Hundreds of people show up at a downtown parking lot on Sundays and holidays. Some come to skate. Others come to watch speedskaters race past. Parents bring children for lessons.

The sport has grown along with Kenya’s growing middle class.

For 27 years, Lameck Wafula has taught singing lessons in a large, sunken outdoor parking lot. Ten years ago, the first roller skaters showed up to use the lot. Over the years, more and more came back.

Wafula’s own daughter became a skater, So he got involved. Today he helps run the Kenyan roller skating league. The group started in 1997 with four members. It now has 60 skating clubs.

The sport of skating is on a roll across Kenya. More than 100 schools teach skaing in gym class. In June, more than 400 racers from all over the country came to a speed skating contest. Hundreds more people came to watch.

A Kenyan hip-hop artist has a music video that includes skating. Even the police department funds a skating team.

This sport has grown so fast. We couldn’t have expected it,” said George Obulinji. He heads the Nairobi branch of Kenya’s skating league.
