Eagle Timings Log Final Report 2/7/18 21: 29 TO 1/16/18 07: 55

Introduction Liberty –Female, Justice - Male

The very first thing I must do is say a huge THANK YOU to all the regular stalwarts who have put up with me, and recognise without their help in pointing out changeovers I missed and even more important for a newby helping me identify which eagle was which (a task which sometimes had them struggling so I had got the proverbial Cat in H***s chance). Plus my pretty constant requests for a different camera view.

The report first set out record total incubating time ie laying to 1st pip. However due to ongoing discussions about nest intruders and the damage they can cause made me change it to nest ATTENDED / UNATTENDED, this changed was recently validated by Talon when he mention another nest where there had been much concern over the lack of incubating time and what effect it could have on results, but healthy chicks arrived so incubating time does not seem so critical as was believed, recently we had minor incident with two crows on the nest rim eyeing up the eggs until Liberty came rushing back and many times a 3rd eagle around, once landing on the nest while Liberty was in it.

Methodology

The report sets out to capture the following data, some of it is automatically calculated the remainder manually calculated.

LTSE* Lapse Time from egg laying (1) to Pip

Attended This is calculated as the sum of all the visits, and is time the when either eagle was at the nest not necessarily on the eggs. I have a confidence of 99% on this figure. The incubating time will be very close to this figure, having seen so many change overs I guesstimate it is 98% of attended time. The Attended time is also presented as a Percentage

Unattended Difference between Lapsed and Attended

Individual times the sum of the total visit times for each eagle, this is 100% dependent on getting the identities correct so I have at best 95% confidence level.

Percentage of time at nest is = attended time / Lapse time *100.

Day/Night attendance times       this is a manual calculation only done on my copy of the spreadsheet. I have assumed fixed dusk and dawn Dusk at 18: 00, Dawn at 06.30 (these will be adjusted by 1hr for summer time, the actual loss of an hour will be ignored as it is neglible in a total time of over 600 hours. The calculation is eagle A) enters nest at 17: 30 and stays until 01.00 total time 7h30 min but 30 mins have to be deducted as the 1st 30m was pre dusk, a similar calculation is done for dawn visits which go past 06.30

Time Data, times are entered as HH: MM: SS because some formats/formula will not work with HH: MM, the only time seconds are entered is 23: 59: 59 and 00: 00: 01. The total lapse time and attended time formats are from the custom menu, [h]: mm: ss this stops the hours resetting to zero after total of 24hrs.

I was asked why I don’t record seconds. The effects of not recording seconds on changes are in my opinion negligible, if both in nest at same time IN/OUT is same figure, now consider A) arrives at XX: XX: 22, B gets off eggs at XX: XX: 40 and A) goes straight on, it is recorded as XX: XX: 00, eagle A has gained 22 seconds of a visit, eagle B) has lost 40s seconds but next time it could be the other way around so overall on swings and roundabouts I believe the effect is minimal.

Please note the stats box at the end of the sheet has a number of operational notes, the most important thing to note is that many of the figures are only correct when the yellow date and time box is manually updated to the data of the last completed visit and immediately then starts running behind the actual figure until it is next updated.

SUMMARY

I hope you find these figures useful in your ongoing quest to protect and grow the bald Eagle population.

It has been a pleasure and a privilege to work alongside everyone but OH how I look forward to getting my life back as the weather picks up, I will continue to watch the chicks develop and ask questions when I don’t understand.

Dave
