Section 1. The goals of the GOLD 2.0 program.

The initial goal of the program was to meet the requests from young people for a leadership development program that would help them translate their idealism and energy into positve active service to others and preparation for accepting leadership roles in their communities, clubs and YMCAs

Some other specific objectives:

Strengthening the long term commitment of young people to the movement.

Training youth to be future leaders at the club, district and Regional levels.

Training youth to deliver training to other youth, as an animator for an online group or as a leader in local training workshops.

.

The expanded focus includes making the training available to all members, expecially the new ones, who do not fall into the category of youth. Leadership development is a lifelong process that recognizes that there is always new information to absorb and new skills that are needed in a changing world.

The program combines two approaches.

Formal Training. This offers leadership development training through a curriculum of modules covering topics whose skills are essential to being an effective leader. “Learning by doing” is perhaps just as important as the formal learning in workshops and online learning. Participants are encouraged to learn and practice new skills through active particpation in the local community and internationally, either through Y Service International and/or the YMCA.

There is an introductory Power Point which can be viewed by the participants before starting the overall curricullum. After the presentation, there are copies of Slide Notes and Commentary Notes for the presenter to share with particpants. MAN-1 contains commentary notes for this PowerPoint.

Section 2. Why GOLD 2.0?

There are at least four reasons why taking the GOLD 2.0 training is beneficial, especially for our youth and new members.

1. For personal development as an individual:

Gain knowledge, skills and confidence to achieve your goals in your personal, educational and professional life while practicing and Improving the skills you already possess. Also earn credits towards an international certificate that could be added  to your personal resume to indicate your wider interests.

2. For their role as a Global Citizen:

Be more effective and successful in your service to others as you make a difference in the world.

3. For their satisfaction as a Y Service/Y’sMen member:

Use your skills and knowledge in active participation in our movement and ensure that we continue to grow in service. Make new friends around the world as you work through the activities together

4. For their future as a leader in the movement:

Gain the confidence to take on additional leadership roles at any level of the organization. When you lead and train others, you establish your leadership credentials in the
movement and become a role model, inspiring others to become agents of change in the world.

Module resources:

The training modules have up to five types of material available to the participants.
Learning activities - an outline of each exercise with reference to other tools.

Appendices - These are pages with information gathered from other sources to be used as references. They may include instructions for using an exercise when training others. These are normally distributed at the end of a particular activity.

Worksheets - Guides for completing assignments usually between meetings.

Power Points and videos - As required, various visual aids are available or will be developed to introduce topics for discussion.

Animator Guides – The two Orientation modules have guidelines for those who wish to animate a group. These guides give hints as to how a series of meetings could be organized and suggest techniques to make the experience as useful and enjoyable as possible.

Module topics.

v  Orientation to Y Service International - Learning about the movement.

Our Mission and Vision.      Our Membership requirements.

Our Programs and History. Our Youth Involvement Opportunities

v Skills Modules

Communication. Presentation. Facilitation. Decision Making.

Problem solving. Goal Setting and Planning. Motivation.

Delegation and Team Building. Conflict Resolution (Optional).

Some modules have up to three sections, numbered 101, 102 and 103, reflecting the increased complexity of the training requirements.

All GOLD program training materials will be available for use by all new members regardless of age or length of service. The document MAN-2 outlines the modules to be completed in order at each level.

Program Learning Outcomes.

The GOLD program curriculum has Program Learning Outcomes to guide those who lead the participants and who help evaluate the effectiveness of the program.

The program has some broad learning objectives and each module has a list for their topic area.

There are also some specific Leadership Objectives that are important to the Y Service/ Y’sMen movement and the YMCA.

The list of Learning Objectives by module is available in the document MAN-6.

There will be a process to track results of the training with a self-assessment questionnaire for each participant before they start the program. After a certain period, the same questionnaire can be administered to see if there has been any improvement.

The self-assessment questionnaire is available in the document MAN-11.

Access to resources:

Major documents are posted on the official web site and a passport protected portion of the current international web site could be used for the actual curriculum materials.

Flash drives shall be available with the resources required to carry out training at the club or Regional level.

Additional Resources:

A list of appropriate videos will be developed, from sources like You Tube or from youth members themselves.

TED Talks on topics related to the curriculum topics will also be flagged. There may be some simulation games suitable for online use.

GOLD participants and supporters are encouraged to suggest or share resources that could be incorporated into the program. New ideas for activities are welcome.

Participant support.

In the implementation of the GOLD training, we recommend that the youth and new members in Level GOLD 2.1, have an experienced member with good knowledge of the GOLD program, to act as an animator and another experienced adult member as a mentor.

The role of animator can be to make sure the learning happens, assignments are completed and resources are made available. He/she can make sure that everyone involved in group sessions is able to take on the animator role as part of the learning process.

A number of Animator Guides have been developed for the Level 2.1 modules, for online use or in workshops. These are found in the document MAN-10.

The mentor is there to respond to questions for advice, information or assistance from the participants. There will also be a need for encouragement to continue and complete the work and provide recognition and assurance in the face of difficulties that arise.

We recommend that participants adopt the practice of keeping a journal for a variety of reasons.

-

- Storage of material for future reference, especially the Appendices and other tip sheets..

- Keeping copies of activities for future use as a trainer.

- Keeping a record of units and modules completed.

- Personal notes about completed assignments and projects of the whole group.

- Material to be shared with other club members
