CARBURETO R SYNCHRO NIZATION

NOTE

Remove both frame side covers and seat.

Start the engine ;ind adjust the idl e speed to 1.100 ± 100 min·l (rpm). Pi nch the fuel valve vacuum line. then stop the engine.

Turn  the  fuel valve  OFF and  remove  the fuel line and fuel tank.

Prepare  a longer  fuel line and  connect  it between the fuel ta nk and carburetor.

Position  the  fuel  tank higher  than  normal. Turn the fuel valve on.

Remove  the  plugs  from  the  cy linder  head  intake ports and i nstall the vacuum gouge adapters.

Connect the vacu um gauges.

Warm up the onginc ond adjust the idle .peed wi th the throttle stop screw.

I DLE SPEED: 1,100 ± 100 m i n 1  (rpm)

Check  that  the  difference  I n  vacuum  readings  is between 0 and 50 mm (2.0 in) Hg.

Adjust within specifications by turning the adjusti ng screw, if necessary.

The No. 1carburetor cannot be adjusted. I t is the base.

Recheck the idle speed and synchronization.

Disconnect tho gauges and remove the gauge adap ter from the port.

Install  the  removed  parts  in the reverse order of dis· OSJCmbly.

R ADIATOR COOLANT

Remove the  frame right side cover and reserve tank

Cov e r .

Check the coolant level of the reserve tan k with the engine runing at normal operating temperature. The level should be between the "UPPE R" and "LOW" level lines.

I f  necessary, remove the reserve tank cap and fill to

the "UPPER" level l ine with a 50/50 mixture of dis· til led water and anti-freeze.

Reinstall the cap, reserve  tank  cover  and  frame side cover.

RADIATO R CORE

Check the ai r passages for clogging or damage. Straighten bent fi ns or col lapsed core tubes.

Remove insects, mud or any obstructions with compressed ai r or low water pressu re.

Replace the radiator if the air flow is restricted over more than 20% of the radiating surf ace.

MAINTENANCE

COOLING SYSTEM HOSES &

C ONNECTIONS

Make sure the hoses are in good condition; they should not have any signs of deterioration. Replac·e any hose that does.

Check that all hose clamps are tight.

CYLINDER COMPR ESSION

Warm up the engine to normal operating tempera· ture.

Stop the engine. disconnect both spark plug caps and remove one spark plug from each cylinder.

Insert the compression gauge. Open the thrattle all the way and crank the engine with the starter motor. Crank the engine until the gauge reading stops rising. The maximum  reading is  usually  reached  within 4·7 seconds.

COMPRESSION PRESSURE:

1,176 ± 196 kPa (12 ± 2 kg/cm1, 171± 28 psi)

If compression is low. check for the following:

Leaky valves; poor valve seating,or needs adjust· ment

- Leaking cylinder head gasket

- Worn piston/ring/cylinder

If compression is high, it indicates that carbon deposits have accumulated on the combustion chamber and/or the piston crown.

BATTER Y

Remove the left side cover and inspect the battery fluid level. When the flu id level near the l ower level, remove the battery and add distilled water to the upper level line as follows:

Remove the left side cover and seat. Disconnect the voltage regulator connectors.

Remove the nut and battery holder with the regula· tor attached.

Disconnect the negative terminal lead from the bat·

tery first, then disconnect the positive terminal lead. Disconnect  the  battery  breather tuM  and pull out the  battery.  Remove  the battery  f iller caps. Care· fully add distil led water to the upper level mark, using a small syringe or plastic funnel.

BRAKE FLUID

Check the front brake f luid reservoi r level. If the level nears the lower level mark remove the cover and dia· phram. Fill  the reservoi r with DOT·3 Brake Fluid to. the upper level mark located i nside the reservoir.

Check the entire system for l eaks, if the level is low.

CAUTI ON

Refer to section 17 for brake bleeding procedures.
