The other day a group of foreign students was invited to look round the Houses of Parliament at

Westminster. The students arrived at Westminster at half past three and went to the entrance in

the Victoria Tower. Soon the guide came and the tour began.

The guide took the students first to the House of Lords. They saw the Throne on which the

Queen sits when she opens Parliament and the Woolsack (a real sack of wool) on which the

Lord Chancellor sits. The Lord Chancellor sits on a woolsack because years ago wool was the

most important thing England produced. There are almost 800 peers in the House of Lords but

only about half take an active interest in the affairs of the state.

Next the guide took the students to the House of Commons. It did not look so splendid as the

House of Lords. However it was much more interesting. The guide showed the Speaker’s Chair

and the seat where the Prime Minister sits, the benches of the Government and of the

Oppositions. There are 650 members in the House of Commons but there are only seats for 370

members.

Afternoon tea can hardly be called a meal. It is a substantial meal only in well­to­do families. It is

between five and six o'clock. It is rather a sociable sort of thing as friends often come for a chat

(поболтать) while they have their cup of tea, cake or biscuit.

In some houses dinner is the biggest meal of the day. But in great many English homes, the

midday meal is chief one of the day, and in the evening there is usually a much simpler supper

— an omelette, or sausages, sometimes bacon and eggs and sometimes just bread and

cheese, a cup of coffee or cocoa and fruit.

modern society. Putin is fond of high land ski and dzu­do, doing them very popular.

Sportsmen of Bashkortostan as well as students – sportsmen took part in many world

champions hips for last three years.

Our sportsmen visited such countries as England, France, Germany, USA, Finland, Italy, etc.

In 2002 Bashkirian sportsmen participated in 177 sports and 391 tourist events. That very year

18 sportsmen of our republic were on summer. Olympic Games in Sidney and 14­in Salt Lake

City.

These examples have their effect on people. And of course, knowing a foreign language is very

important.
