The Present Perfect Tense

Время The Present Perfect Tense образуется с помощью вспомогательного глагола to have и причастия П смыслового глагола, т.е.

TO HAVE in PRESENT INDEFINITE + PARTICIPLE II

(have/has – 3-е лицо ед.

We have read this article today.

He/she has already come.

What have we read today? Why have we read this article today? Who has already come?

в группе Perfect не задается, его следует задавать в Past Indefinite (вспомогательный глагол – did): When did we read this article? When did he/she come?

В отрицательной форме отрицательная частичка not ставится после вспомогательного глагола have / has.

Наречия already / just не употребляются в отрицательной форме и меняются на not … yet :

They have not brought this book yet.

He/she hasn’t arrived this morning.

Remember the following sentences!

I have never been to France. Have you ever been to London? I haven’t seen you for ages! He hasn’t met him for a long time. We haven’t been to Moscow since last year.

Jack London

The novelist and short-story writer Jack London was, in his lifetime, one of the most popular authors in the world. He remained popular in many other countries for his romantic tales of adventure mixed with elemental struggle for survival.

In his writing career of 17 years, London produced 50 books and many short stories. He wrote mostly for money, to meet ever-increasing expenses.

The best books are the Klondike tales, which also include 'White Fang' (1906) and 'Burning Daylight' (1910). His most enduring novel is probably the autobiographical 'Martin Eden' (1909), but the exciting 'Sea Wolf' (1904) continues to have great appeal for young readers.

In 1910 London settled near Glen Ellen, California, where he intended to build his dream home, "Wolf House." After the house burned down before completion in 1913, he was a broken and sick man. His death on Nov. 22, 1916 was probably a suicide.

А. Cardinal numbers

379 – three hundred and seventy nine, 5,084 – five thousand and eighty-four,

2,000 000 – two million, 2,567 – two thousand five hundred and sixty seven,

450,000 – four hundred and fifty thousand, 5,000,000 – five billion.

There is no plural after hundred, thousand, million and billion when they are part of a number. When we are talking more generally, they can be plural, e.g. thousands of people; millions of insects.

E.g.: There are thousands of books in the library. (B

В . Ordinal numbers and dates

e.g. : six – the sixth, seven – the seventh.

One – the first, two – the second, three – the third, five – the fifth.

Оnе problem with dates is that we write them and say them in a different way.

We write 4 January (or 4th January), but say the fourth of January or January the fourth. We write
21 May (or 21st May), but say the twenty-first of May or May the twenty-first. 1997 = nineteen ninety-seven 2003 = two thousand and three.

REMEMBER HOW TO PRONOUNCE THE DATES!

1993 – Nineteen ninety three

1903 – Nineteen oh three

2000 – The year of 2 thousand

2008 – The year of 2 thousand and eight

Fractions and decimals

1 1/4 = one and a quarter 1.25 = one point two five
1 1/2 = one and a half 1.5 = one point five
1 3/4 = one and three quarters 1.75 = one point seven five

Percentages

26 % is spoken as twenty-six per cent.

More than 50 % of something is the majority of it; less than 50 % is the minority.

There are four basic processes. Notice how they are said when we are working out (= calculating) the answer.

+ = addition сложение e.g 6 + 4 = 10 (six plus/and four equals/is ten)
– = subtraction вычитание e.g 6–4 = 2 (six minus four equals/is two)
´ = multiplication умножение e.g 6´4 = 24 (six times/multiplied by four equals/is twenty-four)
: = division деление e.g 8:2 = 4 (eight divided by two equals/is four)

Some people are not very good at mental arithmetic (= arithmetic in your mind without paper) and often get stuck (= have a problem) if they have to work something out. The easiest way is to use a calculator. (= small electronic machine for working out numbers)

Saying '0'

This can be spoken in different ways in different contexts:

Telephone numbers: 567 23 03 – five six seven two three oh three.

Mathematics: 0.3 – nought point three.

5.03 – five oh three =five point nought three.

№ 13. Do you know that

1.  10 % of the world population speaks English as their mother tongue (Chinese 21 %, Spanish 6 %, Russian 6 %, Malay 4 %, Hindi 4 %, Japanese 3 %, Arabic 3 %, Portuguese 3 %, French 2 %, German 2 %).

2.  The word "Christmas" comes from the Old English, "Cristes maesse" which means "Christ's mass" on which Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. It is traditionally a celebration of family and children.

3. The modern Christmas tree tradition came from western Germany, from a medieval custom, as a paradise tree – a tree decorated with apples, wafers (or cookies), and candles representing the Garden of Eden, the host, and Christ.

4. The alarm clock was not invented by the Marquis de Sade, as some suspect, but rather by a man named Levi Hutchins of Concord, New Hampshire, in 1787. Perversity, though, characterized his invention from the beginning. The alarm on his clock could ring only at 4 am. Rumor has it that Hutchins was murdered by his wife at 4:05 am on a very dark and deeply cold New England morning.

№ 14. Read English proverbs and give Russian equivalents:

№ 16. Read this funny story.

Helen was a tall rather slim girl with dark hair and blue eyes. But Helen’s eyes were not very good so she usually wore glasses. But when she was 17 and began to go out with a young man she never wore her glasses when she was with him. When he came to the door to take her out she took her glasses off but when she came home again she put them on.

One day her mother said to her:” Helen, why do you never wear your glasses when you are with Jim? He takes you to beautiful places in his car but you don’t see anything.”

“Well, Mother,” said Helen. “I look prettier to Jim when I’m not wearing my glasses and he looks better to me too.”

What is the World Wide Web?

The World Wide Web (often shortened to WWW or W3 or just the “Web”) is the good-looking part of the Internet. As you have discovered, the Internet is really just a collection of computers linked together across the world. The WWW is a way of ensuring that the information stored on all computers can be accessed by just about anyone.

The WWW has done for the Internet what Microsoft Windows and the Macintosh did for personal computers – it has given the Internet a graphical front-end that can be navigated with a mouse and that is easy to use and understand. Now, information stored on the computers around the Internet is stored in the form of pages. Each page can contain graphics, texts, animations, video, and even sound clips. You can access a page: if you know its address and click on text or buttons to another linked page.

In order to view these pages, you will need a WWW browser application. This software runs on your computer and decodes the HTML instructions to display the formatted page.

To summarize, the WWW is a way of arranging information into individual pages that can be hyper-linked (a button or keyword on one page links to information on another page. The individual pages can have graphics, video or animations embedded together with colour and text formatting (these are defined by the designer using special codes). The user views a WWW page using a browser that will decode these marks to display the finished page.

LESSON 2

Phonetics .

[di¶] ditch – канава;                         [¶ik] chick – цыпленок;

[ei¶] age – возраст;                           [¶ein] chain – цепь;

[ri:¶] reach – достичь;                      [‘ben¶iz] benches – скамейки;

[ben¶] bench – скамейка;                 [‘mi¶il] Mitchell – Митчелл;

[¶i:z] cheese – сыр;                           [‘pik¶e] picture – картина;

[Sip] ship – корабль;                        [‘finiS] finish – финиш;

[Si:p] cheep – овца;                          [‘treZə] terasure – сокровище;

[Seip] chape – форма;                                [‘meZə] measure – мерка;

[Sou] chow – показ;                         [‘pleZə] pleasure – удовольствие;

[³im] gym – спортзал;                                 [vili³] village – деревня;

[³ein] Jane – Джейн;                                    [kei³] cage – клетка;

[³il] Jill – Джил;                               [le³] ledge – выступ;

[³u:n] June – июнь;                                      [si:³] siege – осада;

[‘dein³ə] danger – опасность;                     [‘pei³iz] pages – страницы;

[‘ei³iz] ages – долгий срок;                        [in’gei³mən] engagement – помолвка.

– буквой j: Jill, Jane, June;

– буквой g – перед гласными e, i, y: Gem, cage, gym; исключение составляют слова: get [get], give [giv], gift [gift].

[¶in] – [³in]    –     chin – gin   –     подбородок – джин;

[¶ein] – [³ein] –     chain – Jane –     цепь – Джейн;

[¶est] – [³est]; –     chest – jest –     сундук – шутка;

[¶u:] – [³u:]    –     chew – Jew –     жевать – еврей;

The Past Perfect Tense

To have in Past Indefinite + Participle II

Had

e.g.: We had passed all the credits by the beginning of June.

Strangers in the Night

Writer(s): Kaempfert/Singleton/Snyder

Strangers in the night exchanging glances

Wondering in the night

What were the chances we'd be sharing love

Before the night was through.

Something in your eyes was so inviting,

Something in you smile was so exciting,

Something in my heart,

Told me I must have you.

Strangers in the night, two lonely people

We were strangers in the night

Up to the moment

When we said our first hello.

Little did we know

Love was just a glance away,

A warm embracing dance away and –

Ever since that night we've been together.

Lovers at first sight, in love forever.

It turned out so right,

For strangers in the night.

He tells them that when they are facing the north, the south is behind them, while the east is on the right hand and the west is on the left hand. Just then he sees that one of the boys is not listening to him. He asked him: “Bobby, stand up and tell me what is on your right hand?” Bobby stands up and says,” Please, sir, there is some ink on it, and I can’t get rid of it.”

The art of advertising

Nowadays market economy is widespread all over the world. Any company in these conditions faces a lot of different questions such as arranging marketing system, arranging management system and so on. And the problem of advertising the product is practically at the top of the list.

Some people think that to advertise means to let the customers know about your product. Maybe it was so many years ago. Today, in times of severe competition, a function of advertising is much more complex. You should not only let people know, you should make them buy. In different forms, in different words you should convince everybody that your product is really the best.

So when such a problem appeared, advertising was transformed into a science. It was a mixture of management, marketing and psychology. But the large amount of ads around began to aggravate people. And then the science was developed into the art of advertising. It became creative. Even special institutes exit today where people learn how to advertise and how to do it professionally.

Notes to the text:

To face smth –

To arrange – организовать

To advertise –

To convince – убеждать, уговаривать

Psychology –

LESSON 3

Phonetics . Звук [ a: ]. Звук [ ö ]

Звук [a:]

[ga:dn] garden – сад;                                    [da:k] dark – темный;

[ka:m] calm – спокойный;                           [la:k] lark – жаворонок;

[a:sk] ack – спрашивать;                             [ra:ft] raft – плот;

[a:nt] aunt – тетя;                                         [spa:k] spark – искра;

[a:ftə] after – после;                                     [kla:s] class – класс.

– сочетанием букв а + r: park, car, dark, lark, art, jar;

– буква a также читается как [a:] перед f, nt, th: raft, after, father, bath, plant;

– в сочетании a + s + согласная: class, ask, grass;

[böt] but – но;                                   [köm] come – приходить;

[löv] love – любовь;                          [‘köntri] country – страна;

[döl] dull – скучный;                        [ös] us – нам;

[gön] gun – орудие;                          [‘ögli] ugly – некрасивый;

– буквой u, если за ней следует одна или несколько согласных: but, dull, just, gum, ubder;

– буквой o перед m, n, v, th: come, mother, love, front.

[köm] – [ka:m] –     come – calm –     приходить – спокойный;

[dök] – [da:k] –     duck – dark –     утка – темно;

[lök] – [la:k]    –     luck – lark  –     удача – жаворонок;

[böt] – [ba:t]   –     but – Bart  –     но – Барт (имя);

[pöt] – [pa:k]  –     puck – park –     шайба – парк.

The Future Perfect Tense

To have in Future Indefinite + Participle II

Shall / will have

e.g.: We shall have passed all the exams by the beginning of July.

It will have stopped raining by the evening.

My friends and I will have already done this work by 5.

e.g.: What shall we have already passed by the beginning of June?

What shall we have already done by the beginning of June?

Will it have stopped raining by the evening?

Where will it have already stopped raining by the evening?

Who will have already done this work by 5?

BUT: When will you pass the exams? When will it stop raining?

When will my friends and I do this work? (Вопрос с WHEN задается в Future Indefinite.)

Для образования отрицательной формы The Future Perfect Tense к вспомогательному глаголу shall / will добавляется отрицательная частица not.

Shall not = shan’t

Will not = won’t

e.g.: The boy won’t have done all the work by the evening.

It won’t have stopped snowing by this time.

As soon as we have had dinner, we shall go for a walk.

What is economy?

According to Sigmund Freud, human beings fulfill themselves in two activities: love and work. If the family can be called the institution for love, the economy is the institution for work. More specifically, the economy is the social institution that specializes in the production and exchange of goods and services to satisfy the wants and needs of a population. Work, by its narrowest definition, is the performance of specialized roles in the economy.

After the family the economy probably has a greater influence on our lives than any other institution. Nearly all the world’s people spend most of their time working to produce such goods as food and clothing or to distribute such services as education and medical care. Human beings not only spend most of their lives in economic pursuits, but the kind of work they do largely determines whether the life they lead is poor and deprived or healthy and comfortable.

To specialize in smth –

LESSON 5

Phonetics.

[Dei] they – они;                               [Tik] thick – густой;

[Dem] them – им;                              [Tin] thin – тонкий;

[Den] then – затем;                           [miT] myth – миф;

[Dis] this – этот;                                [tenT] tenth – десятый;

Звук [D], как правило, в служебных словах: в определенном артикле the, в местоимениях this, that, they. Those, them – в конце слов перед гласной e: bathe.

[feis] – [feiT]             –     fact – faith             –     лицо –вера;

[mis] – [miT]              –     miss – myth           –     скучать – миф;

[tens] – [tenT]            –     tense – tenth          –     напряженный – десятый;

[tin] – [Tin]                –     in – thin                 –     консервная банка – тонкий;

[tru:] – [Ttu:]              –     true – through        –     правдивый – через;

[tri:] – [Tri]                 –     tree – three            –     дерево – три;

[beiD] – [beiz]            –     bathe – base           –     купаться – база;

[bri:D] – [bri:z]           –     breathe – breeze    –     дышать – легкий ветерок;

[si:D] – [si:z]              –     seethe – seize         –     кипеть – хватать;

[Dei] – [dei:]              –     they – day             –     они – день;

[Den] – [den]             –     then – den             –

e.g.: He says that he lives in London.

He says that he lived in London.

He says that he will live in London.

THE PAST INDEFINITE TENSE

е.g.: He said he often translated from English into Russian.

We knew that he was a student.

E.g.: He was sure he had to do the work.

All people knew that children must study.

E.g.: He told me that he could swim.

E.g.: We heard they were singing.

We saw the students were writing a test.

They saw it was raining.

THE PAST PERFECT TENSE

E.g.: We knew he had been a student.

I was sure that they had had breakfast.

THE FUTURE - IN - THE - PAST

Для образования The Future-in-the Past (будущего в прошедшем) употребляются формы SHOULD для 1-го лица единственного и множественного числа (I/ we) и WOULD для 2-го
и 3-го лица единственного и множественного числа (you/he/she/it/they) и инфинитива смыслового глагола без частицы to-.

E.g.: I didn’t know that you would come in time.

My friend wanted to know when we would write a test.

1. Learn the words of the famous song “Yesterday” (Beatles)

Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away

Now it look as though they're here to stay

Oh, I believe in yesterday.

Suddenly, I'm not half the man I used to be

There's a shadow hanging over me

oh, yesterday came suddenly.

Why she had to go I don't know, she wouldn't say

I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday.

Yesterday, love was such an easy game to play

Now I need a place to hide away

oh, I believe in yesterday.

Why she had to go I don't know, she wouldn't say

I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday.

Yesterday, love was such an easy game to play

Тw I need a place to hide away

oh, I believe in yesterday, Mm.

IT IS INTERESTING TO KNOW….

3. Read a funny story.

Two Americans were traveling in Spain. One morning they entered a little restaurant for lunch. They didn’t know Spanish; however, the waiter didn’t know English. So they tried to make him understand that they wanted some milk and sandwiches.

At first they pronounced the word “milk” many times. Then they spelled it. But the waiter still couldn’t understand. At last one of them took a piece of paper and began to draw a cow. He was just finishing his drawing, when the waiter looked at it and ran out of the restaurant.

“You see,” said the traveler who had drawn the cow “what a pencil can do for a man who has difficulties in a foreign country”. After some time the waiter was back, but be brought no milk. He put down in front of the two men two tickets for a bull-fight.

Law: a necessary evil?

In the opinion of many people, the law is a necessary evil that should be used only when everyday, informal ways of settling disputes break down. When we buy a train ticket a lawyer may tell us it represents a contract with legal obligations, but to most of us it is just a ticket that gets us on the train. If our neighbour plays loud music at night, we probably try to discuss the matter with him rather than consulting the police, lawyers or the courts. Only when we are injured in a train accident, or when a neighbour refuses to behave reasonably, we start thinking about the legal implications of everyday activities.

Even so, some transactions in modern society are so complex that few of us would risk making them without first seeking legal advice; for example, buying or selling a house, setting up a business, or deciding whom to give our property to when we die. In some societies, such as the United States, precise written contracts, lawyers and courts of law have become a part of daily life, whereas in others, such as Japan, lawyers are few and people tend to rely on informal ways of solving disagreements. It is interesting that two highly industrialized societies should be so different in this respect.

Notes to the text:

to settle disputes – разрешать противоречие

legal obligations – юридические обязательства

a neighbour – сосед

to be injured – быть травмированным

to behave – вести себя. Behave yourself!

an implication – смысл

a transaction – сделка, соглашение

precise – ясный, четкий

informal – неформальный

a disagreement – разногласие

LESSON 6

Phonetics .

[vout] vote – голосовать;                            [‘ounli] only – только;

[rouz] rose – поднялся;                                [ould] old – старый;

[nout] note – примечание;                          [oupn] open – открывать;

[loud] load – груз;                                        [snou] snow – снег;

– буквой o, если за ней следует согласная буква + немая е или любая другая гласная: note, rose, chose, those;

– буквосочетанием - oa: boat, coat, oak, load;

– буквосочетание - ow, стоящее в конце слова, также можете передавать звук [ou]: snow, yellow;

[bOks] box – коробка;                                 [lOt] lot – жребий;

[kOk] cock – флюгер;                                  [sOft] soft – мягкий;

[gOt] got – получил;                                   [rOtn] rotten – гнилой;

[pOt] pot – котелок;                                    [wOt] what – что;

Canada

Canada is a vast country, bigger than the United States, bigger than the continent of Australia. It is in fact one of the world's largest countries. Its area is about 10 million sq km. As Canada extends for thousands of miles from the Arctic Ocean to the United States and from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean, all kinds of weather conditions and scenery are to be found there. The population of Canada is
29 million people. The capital is Ottawa; the main cities are Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.

The word Canada comes from one of the Red Indian languages - "Kannata", meaning "a number of huts". Canada is often called the "Land of the Maple Leaf". The maple leaf is the national emblem of Canada.

The story of Canada goes back over 400 years. The French were the first settlers to this country. In 1759 Canada became part of the British Empire. In 1931 was Independence from Britain.

Today Canada is an independent federative state, consisting of 10 provinces and 2 territories. It is a member of the Commonwealth, headed by the Queen of Great Britain. The two official languages are English and French. But many other languages are spoken: Italian, Chinese, German, Polish and Greek.

Canada is a country with a very high standard of living. This country is particularly advanced in the areas of health, education, social protection and human rights.

Extreme sports

Speed… excitement… danger... You can find all these in different extreme sports that have become popular for the last 10 years. Take bungee jumping. You jump off a bridge and you fall and fall, and then, just before you hit the ground or water, an elastic rope pulls you back. In sky surfing you jump out of aero plane and use a board to "surf" the air, doing gymnastics in mid-air! And extreme sports on land can be just as dangerous.

Winter sports have always an element of danger. For example, snowboarding, which has all the excitement of surfing but on snow, is more dangerous even than skiing. Probably the most dangerous of all the new winter sports is snow rafting. You sit in a rubber boat and sail down a mountain at great speed – and you can’t control the boat!

Of course, water sports have always been fun. Ice diving is for those people who are absolutely crazy. You put on diving equipment and dive under a frozen lake. And, if that’s not enough, you try to walk upside down on the ice! One feels cold just thinking about it.

A lot of people are not fit nowadays. It’s a big problem today. If you want to feel fit you'd better go in for one kind of sport or another. I think that everyone must do all he can to be healthy. Good health is above wealth. All kinds of physical exercises are very useful to make our bodies strong and to keep ourselves fit and healthy. Doing sports a man become strong, healthy and gay. He begins to take care of his health.

№ 31. Read and translate the text paying attention to the notes.

How attention influences what is perceived.

Attention is very important in coping with everyday problems of living or for an adequate understanding of perception, learning and other crucial psychological processes. It is not difficult to find examples in psychopathology, mental retardation and education which demonstrate the necessity of adequate reception and use of information from the external and internal environments if we are to function as “normal” human beings. The ability to attend and its negative counterpart, distraction has been widely considered in the literature of psychology, psychiatry and pedagogy.

The number of outstanding people in psychology who have concerned themselves with the phenomenon of attention is rather impressive, including such names as E.B. Titchener, W. James, S. Freud, etc. It is unfortunate that interest in this process has waned in experimental psychology.

The lack of scientific studies of attention is partly caused by the complexity of the process which makes it difficult to cope with in the experimental laboratory.

Notes to the text:

To perceive – понимать, постигать

To copе with  – cправляться с

Perception –

Psychological  – психологический

Mental retardation  –

Counterpart  – аналог

Distraction – отвлечение внимания

Has been widely considered in… (Present Perfect Passive)

It is unfortunate – к несчастью
