At the Hairdresser’s and Barber’s

1. Mary: Darling, I hope you haven't forgotten about the party we were invited to last week?

John: Certainly not, my dear. I was just going to remind you of it.

Marу: Yen needn’t remind me of such things, John. But you can't expect me to go at to the party looking like that.

John: What's wrong about your appearance? I think you look quite nice.

Mary: That is man all over! He calls it nice with my hair hanging in strands and my fingers that need a manicure.

John: I dare say you are right, Mary. As to me, I need a shave badly. Look here! There is nothing to worry about. We have plenty of time yet before the party.

(No sooner said than done. Mary goes to a hairdresser's.)

Hairdresser: Good afternoon, madam. Would you sit here, please. What would you like?

Mary: I want my hair shampooed and set.

Hairdresser: Very well, madam. Could I help you to put on this cape?

Mа rу : Shall I lean over?

Hairdresser: Yes, please. Would you like a colour rinse or tinting?

Marу : No, thank you. Dyed hair is not very much in vogue now. My hair is naturally auburn. So, after washing it’ll look fine.

Hairdresser: All right. Now I'll just dry your hair and set it. Do you prefer this latest style?

Marу : Oh, no. It may be beautiful but the trouble is there are so many women going about with this hair style. They look so much alike that one can't tell them apart.

Ha irdresser: Well, would you like to have it done in a knot at the back? I'm sure it'll look nice on you, madam.

Mary: I am not sure, but, good, I rely on you.

(Meanwhile John is having a talk with a barber.)

Barber: Good afternoon, sir. What can I do for you?

John: I want a shave and a haircut.

Barber: Yes, sir.

John : Be careful, my skin is very tender.

Barber: Don’t worry, sir. It happened only once that I cut a customer. He jerked his head and I cut his cheek. But I soon stopped the bleeding. Would you like a hot towel massage?

John: Yes, please. I want to have my moustache and beard trimmed.

Barber: Very good, sir. Now, for the haircut. How short would you like it?

John: Not too close. Don't take too much off on the top.

Barber: I see. Your hair is getting rather thin.

John: Yes. Soon I'll have a splendid bald patch on my top. Just think of it, once I used to have a mop of hair really: How time flies!

Barber: May I advise you to change your parting? Would you like it on the right side, sir?

John: Good.

(An hour later John and Mary meet at home.)

John: Oh, Mary, you are a regular beauty with this new hairdo. It's awfully becoming to you!

Mary: It is, isn't it? Aren't you a darling too? Looking so young and prosperous. I'm sure all the girls at the party will fall in love with you at first sight.

2. Lisa: Hi. I've come for my two o'clock appointment. Are you ready?

Hairdresser: Hi, Lisa. Of course, come on over. What would you like to have done today?

Lisa: I want to cut, color and perm my hair. I'm so tired of my long, straight hair. I need a big change.

Hairdresser: Great! Let's pick out a shade of blonde so we can bleach your hair, then we can discuss the cut. Did you want it short?

Lisa: I want to be a blonde with shoulder length, curly hair. I want you to cut a few bangs for me too. I am tired of the hair hanging around my face.

Hairdresser: Let's see. The coloring will take an hour and the perm'll take another hour, do you have about three hours for all this to be done?

Lisa: I have all day. I canceled my manicure because my nails are OK. I want a new hair style and I am willing to be here, as long as it takes.

Hairdresser: OK. First we will shampoo you and then I can start bleaching it. After we bleach it, we can perm it and then cut it. I think you may need to come back in several weeks to have a conditioner put on it because it may become dry from the coloring.

Lisa: That sounds OK. After you cut it you will style it, won't you? I like it blow dried with a bit of mousse. It holds curls better that way.

Hairdresser: Of course I will style it. We won't let you out of here until you look beautiful! Let's get started.

3.At the Barber's:

Bob: Hi, Jake. I've dropped in for a quick hair cut, but I don't have an appointment. Can I get a haircut now?

Jake: I don't think it will be a problem. What kind of cut were you thinking of? Did you want a wash and a dry too?

Bob:  I want a wash and dry but you can make it quick. I just want a trim on the sides. My bangs are short enough already, just a shampoo and trim, then a fast blow dry.

Jake:  Did you want a shave too? You could do that first and then have the haircut, what do you say?

Bob: Yes, I think I need a close shave, but I am growing sideburns so I just want my beard and mustache shaved, please. I don't like the shave of an electric razor, if you could use a razor with lots of shaving cream.

Jake: Of course I will use lots of shaving cream and finish it off with after-shave lotion. So we will do the shave first, then a shampoo and cut. Have you tried slicking back your hair with gel? It's a popular style and it would suit you.

Bob: I haven't tried it but it sounds like a good idea. Why don't you use some gel when you're styling my hair, after the cut and blow dry. And maybe you should use a conditioner after the shampoo.

Jake: Good idea. I'll rinse the shampoo and then give you a conditioner. Let's get going!

Bob: Great. I really am glad you have the time to do me!
