III. Indirect commands and requests



1. Change the following sentences from Direct Speech into Indirect Speech according to the model:

Model: Mary said to Nick, “Please, give me your dictionary.”

Mary asked Nick to give her his dictionary.

The professor said to his students, “Don’t be late for the lectures”.

The professor asked (told) his students not to be late for the lectures.

 

1. The policeman said to the children, “Don’t run across the street.”

2. Alice said to Nick, “Buy an ice-cream for me, please”.

3. She said, “Don’t talk to me when I am working”.

4. Father told his son, “Put on your raincoat”.

5. Peter asked us, “Don’t be angry, please”.

6. The gardener said, “Don’t pick flowers in the park, children”.

7. The policeman said to him, “Drop your gun! ”

8. Alex said, “Would you be so kind and give me some money, mother? ”

9. The boy said to the children, “Stay here for fifteen minutes, please”.

10. They asked me, “Come to our party”.

11. The policeman said to her, “Give me your passport”.

12. She told me, “Don’t leave your coat on the chair”.

13. He said, “Open the window, please”.

14. The girl said, “Alex, would you please buy me something? ”

15. She said, “Please, don’t ask me any questions”.

 

2. Change these commands and requests into Indirect Speech:

a)

1. Не said to us, “Come here tomorrow.” 2. I said to Mike, “Send me a telegram as soon as you arrive.” 3. Father said to me, “Don’t stay there long.” 4. Peter said to them, “Don't leave the room until I come back.” 5. “Take my luggage to Room 145”, he said to the porter. 6. He said to me, “Ring me up tomorrow.” 7. “Bring me a cup of black coffee”, she said to the waiter. 8. “Don't be late for dinner”, said mother to us. 9. Jane said to us, “Please tell me all you know about it.” 10. She said to Nick, “Please don't say anything about it to your sister.” 11. The teacher said to me, “Hand this note to your parents, please.” 12. Oleg said to me, “Put the letter into an envelope and give it to Kate.” 13. “Please help me with this work, Henry”, said Robert. 14. " Please bring me some fish soup", he said to the waitress. 15. “Don't worry over such a small thing”, she said to me. 16. “Please don't mention it to anybody”, Mary said to her friend. 17. “Promise to come and see me”, said Jane to Alice.

b)

1. “Consult the time-table”, said the office worker. 2. The lab assistant said, “Take off your coats and hats, put on these overalls and begin your work, boys, and hurry up.” 3. “Please, ask questions”, the speaker said to the audience. 4. “Don't stay in the way of the traf­fic”, said the policeman. 5. “Take off your coats and come in”, said the hostess to us. 6. “Send your son to a tourist camp”, said the teacher. 7. “Visit your mother this summer, Mary”, said Ann. 8. Mary said, “Come and stay a couple of days with us, Ann”. 9. The policeman said, “Go away, girls, go away, please, don't stand in the way of the procession”. 10. The instructor said, “Don't go skating on such thin ice”. 11. The policeman said, “Don't sound the horns while you are driving near the hospital”. 12. The teacher said to the students, “Will you will be at the meeting at 6 tomorrow”. 13. “Don't keep yourself very warm”, said the doc­tor. 14. “Go to the sea for this summer”, said the doctor. 15. “Put on your sweaters, boys, before and especially after the game”, said the instructor.16. The office worker said to me, “Please, fill in this form and apply to next window but one, will you? ” 17. The shop assistant said, “You read this instruction again, will you? ”

 

3. Work according to the model:

Model: John (to Ann): Please, show me your new English textbook.

Peter (to Max): What did he say to Ann?

Max (to Peter): He asked her to show him her new English textbook.

1. Please, ask Mr. Braun to wait me for a little while. 2. Book two train tickets. 3. Will you please, reserve a single room for me at one of the good hotels in London. 4. Don’t ask me any more questions. I am tired. 5. Take a seat and wait for me a minute. 6. Please, don’t go out tonight. 7. Show me round the city tomorrow. 8. Don’t waste your time. Do your hometask. 9. Don’t argue with me.

 

IV. The Indirect Speech. Revision.

1. Change the following sentences from Direct Speech into Indirect Speech:

а)

1. “I have something to show you”, I said to her.

2. “We have moved into our new flat”, said my aunt.

3. My brother asked, “Who is going to live in the big house? ”

4. “How long have you been here? ”, said Ann.

5. He asked, “Who put salt in my coffee? ”

6. “Open your bag, please”, said the store detective.

7. She said, “Don't argue with your father, Mary”.

8. He said, “How far is it? ”

9. He asked her, “Come to the cinema with me”

10. “I'm going away tomorrow, mother”, he said.

11. “Follow that car”, the detective said to the taxi-driver.

12. She asked him, “Does your mother teach music? ”

13. They said, “Is the food good in this restaurant? ”

14. She said to her friend, “I don't know what your father will say.”

15. He said to his mother, “Did you see me in the shop yesterday? ”
16. I asked him, “Whose car did you borrow last night? ”

17. His mother said, “Don't forget your sandwiches”

18. One of the quests said, “Could you please give me a piece of cake? ”

19. She said, “My father had a birthday yesterday. He was born on the 15th of October in 1955”.

20. “You have pressed the wrong button. The tape will not play”, said mother to her son.

b)

1. He said, “Tom, when are you leaving Moscow? ”

2. My little sister said to me, “Do you like chocolates? ”

3. He said, “There are 26 letters in the English alphabet”.

4. Mary asked Tom, “What time will you come home tomorrow? ”

5. “Don’t leave me here alone today”, she asked her mother.

6. The detective said, “Who owns this revolver? ”

7. She said, “Mary, don't eat too much”.

8. “I'll look at your work in a minute”, said the teacher to the student.

9. She wondered, “Did you call me yesterday? ”

10. He asked, “Will you please forget my phone number? ”

11. They said to him, “You haven't paid your bill! ”

12. He said to her, “Will you go to the cinema with your brother tomorrow? ”

13. Mr. Jones said, “Where is the ticket -office? ”

14. The teacher asked, “Have you done this sort of work before? ”

15. She said to Mary, “Buy a new car”.

16. “Don't work too much”, the doctor said.

17. Nick said, ‘Will you please be so kind and tell me her address? ”

2. Complete the sentences with following statements. Don’t forget about The Sequence of Tenses:

- Ten people have been killed in a bomb attack.

Clare has just arrived at San Francisco airport, where her friend Josh is meeting her. Clare took a long time to go through customs. Report the question what she was asked.
