Advertising and promotion All the activities that go into the development of sales can be grouped under the title promotion of sales. This promotion can use either direct or indirect methods. Every small firm owner should think about using some of the types of sales promotion. The direct promotion methods include: advertising, publicity, displays, special event sales, manufacturer’s aids, personal selling, and sales promotion campaigns. Among the indirect promotion methods there are public relations, customer relations, customer services, product styling and packaging, community goodwill. Advertising can be defined as commercial messages to public designed to inform potential and established customers and to encourage sales for an advertiser. Publicity has always been described as advertising that is not paid for. Displays are a one-site method of sales promotion. Special events sales such as the firm’s anniversary, the president’s birthday, and the start of spring and fall seasons and so on are, of course, ideal for sales. Manufacturer’s aids are any form of assistance provided by manufacturer to small wholesales and retailers for promoting sales. Personal selling means all those activities and characteristics of the individual sales person which makes successful sales promotion campaigns are usually built around a central idea, and they may last a day or even several months. Customer relations build sales independently and also contribute to the total image of the firm. Satisfied, happy customers are the best forms of advertising and promotion.

Some or all of the following considerations may apply in a particular case: fair trade laws, competitor price policies, market strategy, manufacturers suggested prices, and seasonal nature of sales, elastic demand, price lining, and target return pricing. A word about each of these factors will introduce us to the total scene of setting prices. Fair trade laws allow the manufacturer to make agreements with dealers who retail the product on the price at which it can be sold to the public. Competitor prices on similar lines must be recognized when active competition exists between firms. Market strategy is policy of setting prices and quality in a range not served by competitors. Manufacturer suggested prices are designed by manufacturers to protect the quality image of their products and to protect profit margins for the individual retailer. Seasonal nature of sales can affect pricing policy by making it possible to alter prices with the high and low seasons of sales volume. Elastic demand suggests lower prices. Price lining is a policy of keeping merchandise if fairly well-defined price ranges. Target return pricing involves adding a desired percentage return on investment or a specific dollar amount return to total fixed costs in setting retail prices. Initial prices on merchandise must cover all these items: markdowns, shortages, damaged merchandise, employee discounts, operating expenses, cost of goods sold, and profits.
