Colleges with Sports: Your Options

Playing Intramural or Club Sports

Club sports, often referred to as intramural sports, are non-competitive sports leagues for students. Students form their own teams and play against one another in a relaxed low-key setting. There’s no big pressure to win games or championship. The whole point is to have fun. This makes intramural and club sports a great way to get involved in student life on campus.

Most schools offer some type of intramural or club sports program, but some colleges have more options, including sports you may never have even heard of. Available sports options vary from one school to the next and can include everything from touch football to ultimate Frisbee, soccer, Frisbee golf, and more.

Playing Varsity Intercollegiate Sports

For those students who are interested in participating in a sport at a more competitive level, many schools have their own varsity sports teams which compete at the intercollegiate level.

In the case of varsity intercollegiate sports, there is much more pressure to be athletically successful. Most teams hold tryouts and have mandatory practices almost daily. The pressure is high because varsity sports teams are expected to represent their respective college as a whole. Unlike intramural or club sports, in varsity sports there is pressure to win games and championship titles.

Elite athletes have their choice of colleges where they can play varsity sports. Other colleges have tryouts that are much more open. If playing varsity sports is important to you, gauge your chances of making the team.

Cheering on a College Sports Team

Colleges with sports offer more than simply the option to play a sport. At many schools, a high-profile school sports team – often a basketball or football team – can attract a lot of attention and serve as a basis for a social system for students.

Students go with friends to watch games and cheer on the team at home games, will join their buddies at a bar to drink watch televised away games, throw tailgate parties on game day, and party into the wee hours on nights when the team wins big. In this way, colleges with sports can provide a fantastic sense of camaraderie among fellow students.

US College Career-Based Clubs

Universities often have their own chapters of professional organizations or career clubs. These groups can be a great way to become involved in student life, meet classmates with similar career goals, network with people already working in the field and find a job after graduation.

Also check if the college offers extracurricular activities that will help you develop the skills that will improve your resume after college. If you like to write, head toward the school newspaper, yearbook or literary magazine. If you want to be a politician, look into student government.

Career Clubs at US Colleges/ Join career clubs to make contacts for your job.

The US job market can be tough to break into — even more so if you’re an international student with few contacts in the country. It can be easier by joining career clubs in college and meeting people who are already working in your field.

What Are Career Clubs?

Career clubs are groups on campus that focus on a specific field of study. These clubs can be open to anyone studying a certain subject (for example, public relations or engineering) or a more specific group within those students (for example, women in engineering). Some of these clubs are university affiliates of national organizations for professionals already in the field.

Members can learn about job prospects and options for people with their college major or minor. You also may meet university alumni and learn what jobs they got with their degree.

Why Join Career Clubs?

Career clubs give students the chance to learn from people who have jobs in the field they are studying. These people may give presentations to the club, or members may be able to visit someone at their workplace.

Besides the professional benefits, career clubs are a good way to get involved in student life and meet students who have similar interests and goals. The friends you make here could be the same ones who help you find a job later.

Career clubs at US colleges and universities can introduce you to job opportunities you never knew existed. They can also present you to the right people to help you land your dream job. For international students, career clubs can give you an initial glimpse into an American place of work.
