That means everyone who works there wears a tutu. Tutus are ruffled ballet skirts. Doctors wear the skirts over scrubs. Other workers wear them over suits. Even the therapy dog wears a tutu. On Tutu Tuesday, there are lots of smiles. That is the reason behind the weekly event. Tony Smith started it. He works at Joe DiMaggio. He has worked there almost five years. He helps doctors during surgery. Last summer, a young patient needed surgery. She asked Smith to wear a tutu. So he put one on over his clothes. It was a colorful tutu. Having me put on the tutu made her feel better,” Smith said. Someone took a photo of Smith in the skirt. They put it online. It was a big hit. 8. “I never knew I would have that much impact,” Smith said. “I didn’t expect it to go viral.” Going viral” is a term on social media. It means that something online has been shared by lots of people. Workers at Joe DiMaggio like to make their young patients laugh. There is a clown working there. The clown’s name is Lotsy Dotsy. The clown wears a tutu. After seeing Smiths’s photo, workers started asking Lotsy Dotsy for tutus. Tutu Tuesday starts in the parking lot. There, John Aristizabad greets patients. He parks their cars. On a normal day, he wears shorts and a baseball shirt. The hospital is named after baseball star Joe Di Maggio. On Tuesdays, Artistizabad also puts on a tutu. 12. “People laugh and ask why I’m wearing a skirt,” he said, “It’s all for the kids, to catch a smile.” Inside the hospital, tutus are everywhere. Some of the skirts have fancy bows and polka dots. The therapy dog, Nutmeg, wears a pink tutu. Patients seem to love Tutu Tuesday. 15. “Just seeing you are in a tutu brightens their day,” Smith said. “It can keep them from thinking about what’s really going on.” News for You, May 27, 2015 Hubble Telescope Circles in Space for Amazing Years The Hubble Space Telescope turned 25 years old in April. It is still the most powerful telescope in space. Humans have learned a lot from the pictures it sends back to Earth. The Hubble is like an old car that just keeps going. It might look worn out and banged up. But over the years, new parts and fixes have kept it in good condition. It is still running strong. At least, it is for now. The Hubble circles about 340 miles above the Earth. It circles the planet 15 times a day. It can look deep into space, Experts can control it so that it looks at different parts of the universe. U.S. space shuttles have visited the Hubble five times. Astronauts made fixes, changed batteries, and added new equipment. In 2009, the telescope got its best camera ever. The Hubble is fantastic. It’s better than ever,” Jennifer Wiseman said. She works for the U.S. space group, NASA. Countries across the glove use the Hubble. The European Space Agency helped build it. NASA sorts through more than 1,000 plans a year from experts who want to work with the Hubble. The idea for the Hubble dates back to the 1940s. It was designed in the 1970s and 1980s. It was sent into space in 1990. The Hubble sent back amazing pictures. People began to love the Hubble. When U.S. lawmakers said they were going to cancel a repair, school kids sent in their lunch money to help pay for it. Hubble gave us beauty in a way that no other telescope had ever done,” said expert John Mather. Over the years, experts learned a lot, thanks to the Hubble. They learned that the universe is 13.8billion years old. They learned that there are roughly 200 billion galaxies. A galaxy is a system of stars, dust and gas held together by gravity. Experts thought there were only tens of billions of galaxies. |
