Interviews with qualified game developers among all over the world.



In this part, we will take interviews. We will find experts on general game development forums (gamedev.net, gamedev.ru), game engine's forums (c2community.ru/forum, www.construct.net/en/forum, godotengine.org/community, ), social networking sites (vk.com/gamedev_ru, vk.com/c2community, vk.com/unity_engine, vk.com/clickteamfusion, https: //vk.com/godot_engine, https: //vk.com/game_maker matrix.to/#/#godotengine: matrix.org, discord-Godot Engine room, discord-Game Dev League, discord-Indie Gamedev Ru, discord-Russian Gamedev, discord-c2community, discord-GameDev.tv Official). At the beginning of the research we had two additional game engines - AppGameKit and Cocos2d-x. These game engines turned out unsuitable for a number of reasons: they have a small community so I did not get enough replies. In fact, I have got an email with pros and cons from AppGameKit support member Richard Vanner, but there weren't enough too. According to preliminary data these game engines were worse than others so we have removed these engines to concentrate on our popular favorites - Construct 2, Clickteam Fusion 2.5, GameMaker: Studio, Unity, Godot. After finding these experts we will take interviews. The question will be: " Hello sir/madam. I would like to know, what pros and cons game engine which you use has? ". All involved qualified game developers for interviews have finished several games and have a couple of years of experience. Then we will create summarizing table containing all collected information in it - as from the internet, as from interviews.

Additional pros and cons.

Construct 2

Respondent 1.

Pros:

Wide opportunities.

A wide range of plugins, behaviors.

Cross-platform.

Cons:

With professional growth inevitable transition to more complex game engines.

Despite wide opportunities, Construct 2 mostly designed for browser and mobile games.

Respondent 2.

Pros:

The interface is user-friendly and intuitive.

Cons:

Any export except HTML5 is wrapped in HTML5 shell, which increases game weight up to 100-200 MB.

In Construct 2, you need to be careful with games that depend on clear timings (for example, rhythm games).

Maximum FPS with which Construct 2 can work is 60, so working with timings less than 0, 016 seconds is impossible.

A free version of Construct 2 is very restricted.

Construct 2 allows to work with maximum 100 events, 4 layers, 2 effects on all game and HTML5 export only.

Respondent 3.

Pros:

Built-in graphics editor with waypoint system.

Built-in particles system.

Not powerful so you can create a much better system with events.

Ability to work with audio and apply different sound effects.

Games made in Construct 2 are able to be integrated into different social networking sites.

Layers and easy parallax.

WebGL shaders.

Clickteam Fusion 2.5

Respondent 1.

Pros:

Clickteam rapidly gathers full game or application together and runs it instantly.

With add-ons can be used such programming languages as C#, .NET, Lua.

Cons:

While you create a game, there is not always opportunity (especially when a lot of work has been done) to view any information about the object).

Weird behavior of Clickteam sometimes.

When you did everything according to your own instructions, everything worked as it should. After 3-4 launches, something strange and unexpected can happen. In other words, there is plenty of bugs. It applies to the exported game.

Respondent 2.

Cons:

Runtime is bad and you cannot export normally to a different OS.

Is not stable.

It can suddenly lag, for example, an event can be broken and you will think about what is wrong.

The interface shows counters to a user, but they are much heavier than variables.

There is no opportunity to create functions or callbacks.

OOP in Clickteam Fusion 2.5 is very hard to understand, learn, use.

Box2D in Clickteam Fusion 2.5 is much laggy than Box2D in other game engines.
