The importance of learning foreign languages

The problem of learning languages is very important today. Foreign languages are socially demanded especially at the present time when the progress in science and technology has led to an explosion of knowledge and has contributed to an overflow of information. The total knowledge of mankind is known to double every seven years. Foreign languages are needed as the main and most efficient means of information exchange of the people of our planet.

Of course, it is impossible to know all the languages existing on the earth. They say there are about 6000 languages on our planet. Fortunately, those who study English are lucky enough because today English is the language of the world. Over 300 million people speak English because it is their mother tongue. The native speakers of English live in Great Britain, the United States of America, Australia, and New Zealand. English is one of the official languages in the Irish Republic, Canada, the South African Republic.

Nowadays learning foreign languages is very important as people from different parts of the world have common business affairs. Politicians should also communicate with each other discussing the affairs in their countries and the world problems. Many people travel a lot trying to learn more about different countries, their cultures and the life of people. It is difficult to visit countries when you don’t know the language of these countries.

English is the language of science. Half of the world’s scientific literature is in English. It is the language of computer technology. A real scientist cannot do without English, he has to read literature in English if he wants to be up-to date in his field of knowledge.

Some people use it for special purposes, others for business or study. There are also certain “international” professions, such as airline pilots, air-traffic controllers, what require a working language of English.

English is one of the official languages of the United Nations Organization and other political organizations. Without English you cannot be successful neither in business, nor in politics, nor in public relations.

It is the language of the literature, education, modern music, international tourism. It is well known that reading books in the original, listening to the BBC news, communicating with the English-speaking people will help a lot. Those who are fond of literature should also know English if they want to read in the original the works of the great English and American writers. Certainly, most of the books by W. Shakespeare, W. Thackeray, M. Twain, J. London have been already translated into Russian but you will never understand them to the full in translation.

If you know English you will be able to read English newspapers and magazines. Knowledge of foreign languages helps young people of different countries to understand each other develop friendship among them.

When learning a foreign language, you learn the culture and history of the native speakers. One must work hard to learn any foreign language.

You can see a lot of advertisements, signboards, names in the streets. They are in foreign languages. Very often they are in English. If you know English you can read and understand them.

Now we buy many clothes from other countries. If you know English well, you can read something about the size of this or that thing. It is clear for you what it is made of. 

There are a lot of films in foreign languages. If you know them, you can understand films without any help.

There are international friendship camps in the world. If you can speak foreign languages, it will be easy for you to visit such camps and speak with the people who don’t know Russian.

Russia is integrating into the world community and the problem of learning English for the purpose of communication is especially urgent today. Learning a foreign language is not as easy thing. It is a long and slow process that takes a lot of time and patience. But to know English is absolutely necessary for every educated person, for every good specialist.

I do realize that it is impossible to master a foreign language and speak it like a native speaker. I am ready to improve my English all my life.
