Отношение индейцев к колдовству

Несмотря на все отрицания со стороны индейцев, вера в колдовство среди них продолжала существовать. Клайд Клакхохн еще в 1944 году столкнулся с тем, что навахо не любили говорить, а порой даже упоминать о колдовстве, и скорее отвечали, что не верят в него. Один из них, отрицая существование колдовства, добавлял, что даже его прадед " говорил, что никаких колдунов не существует". Кейт Бассо в 1970 году также отмечал, что от западных апачей ему часто приходилось слышать подобные выражения: " Я могу рассказать тебе все, что я слышал о колдунах, но не думаю, что это правда".

Происходило это по нескольким причинам. Во-первых, по индейским поверьям, даже говоря о колдовстве, можно было навлечь на себя беду. Во-вторых, они знали, что белые люди могут поднять их на смех, как суеверных дикарей. Однако в 1940-х годах несколько навахо были обвинены в колдовстве и убиты соплеменниками. Иногда эти случаи попадали в газеты. Например, в 1942 году вблизи Фруитлэнда, что в штате Нью-Мексико, один из навахов, посчитавший, что четверо его соплеменников колдовством довели до смерти его детей, убил их, после чего покончил с собой. Кейт Бассо писал, что, когда начал работать среди западных апачей, он принимал их слова на веру, пока однажды его наиболее скептически настроенный информатор не приписал смерть маленькой девочки нападению колдуна. Позже Бассо отмечал: " Сегодня нет эмпирических свидетельств, подтверждающих слова апачей, что люди действительно практикуют техники, приписываемые колдунам. Ни я сам, ни мои информаторы (апачи) никогда не видели колдуна в действии, колдовской пляски или даже ритуальных принадлежностей, которые, по сообщениям, используют колдуны. Но неопровержим и тот факт, что люди открыто называют себя жертвами колдунов, обвиняют других в колдовстве и обычно стараются найти возможность провести церемониальное лечение. Многие взрослые апачи носят защиту от колдунов. Определенные болезни считаются насланными колдунами, и шаманы, искусные в их лечении, ценятся очень высоко".1

Подобное положение сохраняется и сегодня. Индеец навахо Дуг Хикмэн так написал об этом всего несколько лет назад: " Получить информацию о навахских колдунах довольно сложно. Навахо не говорят о силах темной стороны своей культуры, опасаясь возмездия. Мои старшие соплеменники бранили меня, отговаривая писать о колдунах. По их словам, если навахские колдуны узнают, что я написал о них, они нашлют на меня зло... До сих пор навахо очень боятся колдунов... Считается, что чужак, задающий вопросы о навахском колдовстве, ищет неприятности и может накликать беду. Ведь чужак, задающий вопросы, может оказаться Ходящим в Шкурах (колдуном), высматривающим себе новую жертву".
