PROJECT:

The neighborhood of Rimac, at the time of colonial Lima, used to be the part of the town where the Spanish nobles had their luxurious residences. That changed with the time, and nowadays the hyped Miraflores and Barranco districts house the high and medium classes of Lima, while Rimac has been deserted. The ancient colonial and pre-colonial heritage has been for long neglected, but now the municipality, in collaboration with the Bolivarian Brigade of Volunteers, has decided to change the situation.

For 2018, the Brigada, in partnership with other local organizations, presented a project of valorization and conservation of the historical center of Rimac to the World Heritage Volunteering Initiative in order to dynamize the process of rehabilitation of the district.

The Brigade and the Municipality of Rimac welcome the volunteers willing to help us to help in the requalification of the Backus factory, the cleaning of the Huaca la Florida and the mobilization of the inhabitants in the Trujillo street.

WORK

OBJECTIVE:

Sensitize the population of the district to the importance of the cultural heritage conservation through the requalification of historical sites of the city center.

ACTIVITIES:

The volunteers, under the supervision of a technical leader, will clean, paint and furnish the last floor of the ancient backus factory, in order to allow the Rimac social center to use it for cultural and pedagogic activities.

The volunteers will clean the Huaca la Florida archeological site, in order to open the ancient temple ruins to the public. They will also organize an activity to raise awareness on the importance of the site targeting the local population.

Supported by the local organization ocupa tu calle, the volunteer will organize street action in order to requalify the urban space of Jiron Trujillo, an ancient street with high tourist potential, by involving the local inhabitants.

The participants will also prepare and implement some interventions in the Rimac schools aiming to sensitize the local pupils to the importance of local heritage and its preservation and valorization.

ACCOMODATION AND FOOD:

The participants will be accommodated in the historic center of Lima. The facility offers basic services: water, electricity, laundry. The participants will sleep in shared rooms and will have to bring their own sleeping bag. The volunteers will receive food and will have to take care of cooking and cleaning activities. Do not forget some traditional, typical foods, drinks and recipes from your country of origin for the international evening

LOCATION AND LEISURE:

Rimac district is located in the northern part of Lima, the capital of Perú and ancient capital of the colonial dominions of Spain in the Andean region. Rimac district is nowadays mainly inhabited by low classes inhabitants, but just crossing the Rimac river you are in the very historical center of the town. You can breathe the atmosphere of the colonial Lima just walking in its ancient streets, lined with beautiful “casona”, the houses of the Spanish nobles.

Besides, you have all the leisure activities of a big and modern capital at your disposal, museums, archeological sites, bars, restaurants, clubs, and even the possibility to surf on the waves of the Pacific Ocean! From Lima you can easily organize excursions to visit all the most beautiful sites of Perú, like Machu Pichu, the Titicaca lake, the White Cordillera etc.

The Aguaytia branch of the Brigade of Bolivarian Volunteers of Peru invites you to participate as a volunteer to reinforce the activities of the Center for Integral Family Development (Cedif), a unit of the National Integral Program for Wellbeing Familiar (INABIF), where children, adolescents and seniors are assisted. The social work done by this structure, even if little known by the population, is very important for the community. These spaces provide specialized services aimed at strengthening families, the promotion of respectful and caring family relationships and the integral development of its members.

The project aims to work with children and adults, who are a fundamental link of the integral development of our society. We hope to strenghten food security and care of the environment through the installation of BIOHUERTOS (organic orchards), which is an efficient and sustainable alternative to protect the environment and generate our own food supplies without using synthetic chemicals to control pests or fertilize the land, as well as avoiding the use of plastic bags used for package. Also, through this activity, children are taught the importance of environmental care and how to grow food in urban spaces.

The organic agricultural approach that used during this project is the Biogarden. Its agroecological production does not harm the soil or the environment, on the contrary it assures the long term productivity of the soil, fixing nutrients and absorbing only what is necessary. The control of pests and diseases is assured in a biological way, that allows achieving a natural balance in the environment, without producing toxicity or totally eliminating species, and also improves feeding with the consumption of fresh and healthy vegetables.

We welcome volunteers to be part of this program and participate in the installation activities of Bio-gardens and environmental care activities.

WORK

OBJETIVOS:

Perform integration activities with the center users through the installation of Biogarden and sensitize them to environmental care through the organization of workshops.

Environmental workshops: the volunteers will organize workshops and learning sessions in order to sensitize the center users. The activities will be carried out with the center staff and the volunteers will be supported in developing a dynamic methodology among the children.

These talks will include theater activities related with the topics of care of the environment. At the end of this workamp, the talks and the plays will be disseminated through the radio and television, in local media, to raise awareness about the respect of the environment.

VOLS

PROJECT:

Every year during the low-temperature season, the population of several departments of the High Andean zones suffer the negative effects and damages caused by the cold weather. This Phenomenon affects mainly the populations in a situation of high vulnerability, both because of their social condition (poverty and extreme poverty), because of their age (boys, girls, seniors, etc.). In order to counter this situation, they need viable actions not only of preparation and response, but also the inclusion of sustainable prevention and risk reduction measures in order to face the natural phenomenon.

In order to change that situation, we started a project that has been already tested in other areas and that benefit families in extreme poverty affected every year by frost and cold. The Puno branch of the Brigade of Bolivarian Volunteers of Peru (BVBP) is committed to improving the situation of these communities by building WALLS TROMBE to increase the temperatures of homes in a vulnerable state and give a better quality of life to their inhabitants.

SPECIAL REMARKS:

Bring a warm sleeping bag, working clothes, gloves and shoes, warm and rain clothes and a flashlight. Everybody must, in any case, bring their insurance certificate. If health issues happen on the project, volunteers will have to pay for it, and then be reimbursed once back in their home country.

MEETING POINT:

You can reach Lima by plane from all around the world. The meeting point is at the arrival terminal of the Jorge Chavez International Airport of Lima (LIM) the 8th of July at 9 PM. The camp leaders will welcome the volunteers and then move the group to the accommodation by public transport.
