                How it all began.

 whatever he did: he was a carpenter, an owner of a small hotel, a village postman. 23)___________ he decided to start a new life in a new place and in 1889 Elias with his young wife Flora and their small son Herbert moved from Florida to Chicago. In Chicago two more sons were born — Raymond and Roy, then Walter — on the fifth of December, 1901, and two years later — their daughter Ruth. 24)_______________, and thinking about the future of their children, Elias and Flora moved to the country where they bought a small farm.

Living on the farm was the happiest time in Walter's life 25)______________. For all his life he remembered the lawn in front of their house, beautiful weeping willows and fruit orchards with huge apples. He could spend hours watching the life and habits of animals. Disney even brought up a piglet. His name was Skinny and he fol­lowed Walt wherever he went. They say Disney remembered the animals on his father's farm better than the people he met.

At that time it appeared that Walt was fond of drawing. His parents often bought him albums for drawing and colour pencils. But one of Disney's first pictures was made in coal on a white wall of their recently painted house when his parents were away.

26)_______________Elias Disney had to sell the farm, and after four years of wonderful time in the country, the Disneys moved to Kansas City. Walt and Roy helped their father in his new business. They had to get up at half past three in the morning to deliver morning newspapers and not to be late for school. Soon nineteen-year-old Roy got tired of it and decided to live and work on his uncle's farm. After his departure Walt had to deliver the newspapers himself.

27)__________He went to the cine­ma and theatre, spent a lot of time in the library. His favourite writers were Mark Twain, Swift, Stevenson, Dickens. Disney also admired the great talent of Charlie Chaplin.

When Walt was fourteen, he made up his mind to become an artist and his father let him attend the courses at the Kansas City Art Institute. But after the USA joined the World War I in April 1917, Disney volunteered as a Red Cross ambu­lance driver in France. He was seventeen when he returned home and got a job in an art studio in Kansas City. Walt's brother Roy worked in a bank in Kansas at that time and Walt could always get help or a word of advice from him. Later Disney made animated commercials at the Kansas City Ad Company and as he was very successful he decided to found his own cartoon production company. 

With the help of a few young animators Disney made six-minute films illustrating famous fairy-tales Cinderella, Little Red Riding-Hood and some others.

The twenty-year-old president of the new company thought these films 28)_________________. But it appeared that the car­toons were not profitable, and soon Walt went bank­rupt.

29) ___________. Roy advised him to try his luck in Hollywood, and in 1923, with forty dollars in his pockets, Walt headed for Los Angeles. That year Walt and Roy founded their own cartoon company in Hollywood and made a series of cartoons called Alice in Cartoonland. These cartoons combined a "live" Alice with cartoon char­acters.
