ПРАКТИКО-ОРИЕНТИРОВАННЫЕ ЗАДАНИЯ Задание 1.3 Прочтите и переведите текст и ответьте на вопросы. THE CHANGING FACE OF THE UK Let's start with good news – today people in GB are living longer than 65 years ago. The average lifetime is 80 for women and 75 for men. In 1952, people lived only 52 on average! Has our life become better? Maybe. Less and less people are smoking now (only a quarter of population). We eat more fruit and vegetables. However, about three quarters of men and two-thirds of women are overweight. More and more youngsters in the UK are studying (55% among the 16-19 year-olds). 50 years ago, this rate was only 35%! British teenagers understand that a good qualification is the only way to get a well-paid job. 79% of men and 69% of women have jobs. People earn three times more money than half a century ago – but the gap between the rich and the poor is growing. Traditional family and home life is also changing. About a third of the Brits live alone or without marrying. A quarter of million (40%) of children in England and Wales were born by parents who are not married to each other. Women are having children later – after the age of 29 on average. Young people are staying with their parents longer than before, because the life is too expensive. The proverb “Early to bed early to rise” is a good description of the British lifestyle. On weekdays, most people get up before 8 a.m. (77% of the total) and go to bed before midnight (81%). Main meal times are from 8a.m. to 9a.m. (breakfast), at 1 p.m. (lunch), and between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. (dinner). Many modern youngsters can’t or don’t like to cook. A famous “five-o-clock” ceremony is not popular now. Young adults prefer to have “coffee-breaks” in the offices or eat at fast-food cafes. Oatmeal, eggs and bacon – traditional English foods – the British substitute them into the Indian or Chinese dishes, hot dogs and burgers. What do the people in the UK do in the evenings? Are the Brits a nation of couch potatoes? On average, they watch TV for 25 hours a week. Children and teenagers watch less TV than 25-44-year-olds but spend five times longer playing the games in their mobiles or PCs. Teenagers are also the biggest Internet users. On average, they are online for four hours a day. 1. Why are people living longer? 2. What job area is growing fast? 3. Why are young people staying with their parents longer? 4. Why do some people think the UK is a nation of “couch potatoes”?
