Outdoor activities: hiking, camping, rock climbing, hunting, jogging



Note: When we start a hobby for the first time we often use the phrasal verb take up, and when we stop doing the hobby for the final time, we often use the phrasal verb give up.

Cooking: boil: in water, fry: in oil or butter above the heat, grill: under the heat, roast: in the oven using oil, bake: in the oven without oil……

Note: Food, which is not cooked, is raw.

Food: to have breakfast / lunch / dinner / a snack at, to cook, have to feed cats….

Note: With breakfast, lunch or dinner in general, there is no definite article (the).

Describing food: Tasty, tasteless, bland, neutral in flavor, sweet, bitter, salty, hot/spicy, fresh: recently produced, recently picked…..

Eating in restaurants: three courses: a starter, a main course, a dessert, also have an aperitif, coffee, to pay the bill, to leave a tip, to book = to reserve a table……

Things people collect: stamps, coins, antiques, photos

Shops and shopping: shop assistant, sales assistant, shop window, shopping centre, window shopping, shopping list, department store, supermarket, newsagent('s), butcher('s), greengrocer('s), boutique, chemist('s),

Note: Most other shops are just '+ shop', e.g. shoe shop, record shop, camera shop..

Using the land: the ground, the soil, to grow, parks and gardens, trees and plants, flowers, roots and leaves, to plant the tree or plant, to water, agriculture / farming, to pick the fruit, to harvest crops

Also check important lexis for: readng books & magasines, travelling & sightseeing, theatre & cinema, organizing a party……..
