My Family

We are seven in the family: Mother, Father, a brother, a sister, my wife, my daughter and I (me).

My name is Alex Sviridov. I am 26. At the age of 18 I finished school and then I was in the Russian army. When I returned home, I went to work to the construction site where my father works. I am a bricklayer. (1) Last year I entered the Tomsk State University of Architecture and Building (part-time department). (2)

My father is 52 years old. He works at the construction site, he is an engineer. My mother is two years younger than my father. She is an economist but now she does not work, she keeps house. (3)

I am married. My wife’s name is Helen. She is 25, she is one year younger than me. She studies at the Polytechnic University. She is going to be a manager. My little daughter was born three years ago. Every morning, except Sundays and Saturdays, we take her to the kindergarten.

We live in a four-room flat in a modern block of flats. Our flat has all modern conveniences (4): gas, central heating, cold and hot running water and a telephone. We ail like to gather in the evening, talk about the latest news, watch TV or read and study. We have lots of friends who often come to see us on Saturday evenings or on Sunday.

My Working Day

As you already know, in the daytime Alex Sviridov works at the construction site but in the evening he studies at the Tomsk State University of Architecture and Building (part-time department). It takes much effort to combine work and studies.

Alex usually gets up early, opens the window and does his morning exercises. After that he goes to the bathroom, takes a shower, dresses and he is ready to have breakfast. His morning gymnastics and a shower help him to feel strong all day long. (1)

Alex doesn't spend much time on his breakfast, it takes him (2) about a quarter of an hour. He has time for a cup of coffee and a sandwich or two. At ten minutes to eight he leaves home. Alex lives rather far from his work and he gets there by bus. It takes him 30 minutes to get to the construction site. His working day lasts eight hours plus one hour's break for dinner.

Three times a week (3): on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday he has lectures, classes and labs (4) at the University. But on the days when there are neither lectures nor classes at the University, he gets home at about 6 o’clock in the evening. He has supper and if the programme is interesting, he watches TV or listens to the music. Later he looks through his notes and does his homework. At half past eleven or at twelve he goes to bed.

Our flat

I live in the city in a block of flats. Our flat is on the first floor and we don’t take a lift. We usually go upstairs and downstairs on foot. There are no flats on the ground floor. There are some shops and a library there. It is very convenient.

Our flat is big. There is a living room, a dining room, a bedroom and a children’s room in it. At the end of the corridor there is a big hall with a balcony. At the other end of the corridor there is a kitchen and a bathroom. The dining room is opposite the living room, and the children’s room is to the left of the bedroom.

We have all modern conveniences (1) in our flat: telephone, gas, electricity, cold and hot water.

My room is not very big. There is a table with a computer, a wardrobe and a bookcase in it. In the corner of the room there is an armchair. In the living room you can see a sofa, two armchairs, a TV set with a video tape-recorder and a table. There is a carpet on the floor, nice curtains on the window and a modern lamp on the ceiling. There are also pictures on the walls and a vase on the table.

In the dining room you can see a sideboard and a big table with chairs around it. The door of the dining room leads to the kitchen. The kitchen is not very big. There is a cupboard, a table, a refrigerator and a radio there.

My father’s garage is in the yard. We often go by car to the country to visit my aunt.
