The Objective with the Infinitive

(The Complex Object)

 

Структура предложения :

 

	Подлежащеее		гл.-сказуемое		дополнение		инф.		обстоятельство

 

 

He           considers   the workers       to do       it.

Он                 считает, что      рабочие            делают     это.

I                heard            her                        sing         at the concert.

Я              слышал, как (что) она                      поет            на концерте.

 

"Объектный инфинитивный оборот" употребляется после глаголов, выражающих:

          

1. Физические восприятия и ощущения:

 

to hear - слышать                              to watch - наблюдать

to see - видеть                                  to observe - наблюдать

to feel - чувствовать                         to notice - замечать

to make, to cause - заставить,вынудить

                                        

Инфинитив употребляется без частицы 1to.

                                         

2. желание,потребность,мнение,предположение,утверждение:

                                                       

to want - хотеть                     to believe - полагать,считать

to wish - желать                    to consider - считать

to desire - желать                  to think - думать,считать

should like - хотел бы           to expect - ожидать

to know - знать                      to prove - доказывать

to understand - понимать                    to assume - предполагать,допускать

to find - обнаруживать         to note -отмечать

to state - устанавливать         to report - сообщать

to show - показывать            o declare - заявлять

 

3. приказание, требование, просьбу, разрешение

                                      

to order -приказывать          to request - просить

to command - приказывать    to allow - разрешать

to ask - просить                     to permit – допускать

 

На русский язык "объектный инфинитивный оборот" переводится придаточным дополнительным предложением.

 

Ex .1 Translate the following sentences into Russian. Pay attention to the use of the Complex Object.

 

a) 1. He wanted us to visit the art exhibition.

2. I expect you to tell me everything.

3. The teacher does not consider him to be a good student.

4. The engineer expected the work to be done in time.

5. We expect you to show good results.

6. We know him to have graduated from the Institute two years ago.

7.Everybody knows him to be writing a new book.

8.They thought him to have taken part in their experiment.

9.Did you want the plan to be improved?

 

b) 1. She felt somebody look at her.

2. We heard him come in and close the door behind him.

3. Nobody noticed he leave the room.

4. The students heard the bell ring.

5.In spite of bad weather the instructor made the sportsmen continue their training.

6. She saw her sun fall.

7. I neard him mention my sister's name.

 

Ex.2 Make up sentences using the Complex Object.

Ex.3 Transform these sentences into the sentences with the Complex Object and translate them into Russian.

                                                   

Model:       We expect that the text-book will appear in print soon.

              We expect the text-book to appear in print soon.

 

1. We think that the article is too difficult for the students.

2. They consider that Nick is the best student in their group.

3. We believe that his discovery is of great importance.

4. In the Middle Ages people believed that the earth was the centre of the Universe.

5. The students watched how the professor proceeded with his experiments.

6. The engineer did not expect that his invention proposal would be put into operation so uickly.

7. We knew that they have already arrived.

8. We know that the East End of London is unattractive in appearance.

9. They expect that these rivers will be soon connected by means of canals.

 

Ex.4 Read the following sentences. Point out the Complex Object. Translate these sentences.

 

1. We find these value to be accurate enough.

2. I heard somebode speak in the next room.

3. You must make them check the results carefully.

4. They expected us to have found the answer to the question.

5. You must make him explain the results obtained.

15. They wish the article to be published next month.

16. We saw him approach his comrade and give him a book.

17. I heard her be speaking English to that delegate.

18. Our teacher makes us listen to the tapes and fulfil English laboratory works.

19. We believe them to have changed the plan.
