Exercise 6. Complete the following sentences according to the model.



Model: If she helps us, we (finish the work much earlier)

        If she helps us, we will be able to finish the work much earlier.

Exercise 7: Practice the following according to the model:

Exercise 8. Fill in the gaps with one of the following modal verbs: can, could, may, might, must, should.

Exercise 11. Translate the following sentences into English.

Тебе не следует заключать договор с этой фирмой. 5. Мой муж может помочь вам перевести договор. 6. Вам категорически запрещено присутствовать на собрании. 7. Он может быть обвинён в мошенничестве. 8. Два года назад мы не могли заключить с ним договор, а сейчас можем. 9. Должен ли я прочитать устав компании сегодня? –Нет, не нужно. Вы можете сделать это, когда Вам будет удобно. 10. Ремни безопасности должны быть всегда пристёгнуты. 11. Все заявления следует отправлять на следующий электронный адрес. 12. Мог бы ты выступить в суде в среду?

Modal verbs in the meaning of supposition and criticism.

 

Modal Verb Present/Future Past
can/could He can still be at work. (90% certain) He could be at work. (50% certain) It can’t be true. (Не может быть, что это правда) Can it be Tom? (Неужели это Том? )   We could have had an accident. (luckily we didn’t) He couldn’t have played football. He was ill. (не может быть, что бы он играл в футбол. Он болел) Could he have done this work alone? (Неужели он сделал эту работу один? )
must It must be true. (Должно быть, это правда) He must have gone out. (Должно быть, он вышел)
may/might It may be Tom, but I am not sure. (Это возможно Том, но я не уверен) You might wait for me. There is a lot of time. (Ты мог бы и подождать меня. Еще много времени) She might have lost our telephone number. (Она возможно потеряла наш телефонный номер) You might have warned me. Why didn’t you do it? (Ты мог бы и предупредить меня. Почему ты не сделал этого? )
should They should warn us. (им следует предупредить нас) They should have warned us. (But they didn’t’t). (Им следовало предупредить нас) They shouldn’t have gone there alone, (but they did) (Им не следовало идти туда одним)
