- интонационные (с этапом ознакомления);

-лексические (с этапом ознакомления и без него);

Today you will learn to investigate intonation structures and to see how intonation patterns correspond to the speaker's mood. You will go on learning to characterize people and their actions.

1. Дифференциация на слух высказываний с нисходящей (descending) и низкой (low) шкалой на основе предварительного ознакомления с информацией о характеристиках каждой из них.

All attitudes and emotions are expressed with the help of different tone groups. A tone group is a combination of a definite type of scale with a definite nuclear tone. As you know, there are six nuclear tones: Low Fall, High Fall, Low Rise, High Rise, Fall-Rise, and Rise-Fall. There are two main types of scale: the Stepping (= Descending) Scale and the Low Scale. Within the Stepping Scale every stressed syllable is pronounced on a lower pitch than the preceding one. Within the Low Scale all the stressed syllables (with the possible exception of the last one) are pronounced on the same low pitch.

Listen to the following sentences and show your red cards for the Stepping Scale and the blue ones for the Low Scale.

It & isn't & quite what I \want.

It's |much too |late to have |any re|grets \ now.

||What's that ||got to udo with \you?

||Don't take any \notice of him., etc.

2. Чтение вслух ряда предложенийс нисходящей и низкой шкалой согласно заданной разметке.

3. Анализ предложений по компонентам интонационной шкалы.

A tune can be divided for purposes of investigation into several elements. The Nucleus is the syllable within which the tone changes (rises or falls): “Don't I \know it? " The Head begins with the first stressed syllable and ends before the Nucleus: " \ What a Difference from |this time \last week! " The Pre-head consists of the unstressed syllables before the first stressed one (= before the Head): " But do you \ really under \stand it? "

The Tail consists of the syllables coming after the Nucleus up to a pause: " But can I really be\lieve you when you say that? " The only indispensable element is the Nucleus. Any of the others - or even all the others - may be missing: " Go! "

Analyse any three or fourutterances from Tasks 1 or 2 according to the above-given elements.

4. Условно-коммуникативный обмен репликами, развивающий, с одной стороны, навыки использования нисходящей и низкой шкалы, а с другой стороны, навыки соотнесения интонации в воспринимаемом высказывании с настроением собеседника. Предлагаются несколько микродиалогов, в которых первоначальная реплика воспроизводится дважды: с низкой и нисходящей шкалой, при соблюдении того же ядерного тона. Собеседник выбирает соответствующий по смыслу вариант ответной реплики.

Например:

- What's that got to do with you?

- But it is my business! You needn't be so (surprised, rude) about it.

(К заданию 4 желательно дать краткую информацию о том, какие настроения чаще всего выражаются нисходящей и низкой шкалой.)

5. Чтение про себя диалога с заданной разметкой и описание отношения говорящих друг к другу и к данной коммуникативной ситуации.

6. Воспроизведение этого же диалога в парах согласно разметке. Например:

- ||Five o'||clock al\ready! We |must get there by \/ dark.

- ||How much ||farther\is it?

- We |passed the |halfway \/ house | aboutan \ \ hour ago.

-/Well, | weve |done the || worst part.

-~0h \\no! | There's «worse ||still to \come.

-I |don't think I can go |on | |very much |\/longer.

-I |don't suppose we \ can reach the top. | \No!

- |Had we |better | |turn /back?

- \Yes. | I |think we'd better.

- -Oh /well | we must |try again another \day.

-\I am to /blame. | We \started |too |late.

- And \/ I was too \slow. [53]

7. Интонирование готовой связной реплики и ее расширение согласно предполагаемому коммуникативному намерению.

Reproduce the utterance giving the right intonation patterns according to the attitude of the speaker. Add a few sentences:

Don't blame me. It was all your fault. You always say that youcanmanage alone. And what is the result, I wonder? We've lost our way!

8. Высказывание по поводу данной коммуникативной ситуации. (Инструкция косвенно направлена на тренировку в употреблении модальных глаголов с перфектным инфинитивом и таким образом увязывает занятия по выработке фонетических и грамматических навыков.)

Should the characters from the dialogue have behaved the way they did? What should they have done, do you think?

9. Свободное комментирование высказываний, связанных с особенностями коммуникативной ситуации, представленной в диалоге.

Comment on the following statements:

1) Blaming others is a sure sign of weekness.

2) Love the game more than the prize.

3) A man should make a fair trial of his abilities if the opportunity presents itself.

Today you will learn to explain the contextual meaning of words, to express your attitude to certain ideas concerning pastime, and to find different ways of expressing it.

1. Тренировка в ритмико-звуковом оформлении высказывания.

think It is sometimes the only way out.

thing This is the best way to do it.

everything I am fed up with sightseeing.

nothing There is nothing like camping., etc.

2. Замена слов в предложениях синонимами (множественный выбор).

Read the following sentences and paraphrase the words in italics using the necessary substitute among those offered below:

sight 1) place of interest 2) spectacle 3) power of seeing   way 1) road, path 2) distance 3) method   feeling 1) sympathy 2) sensation 3) taste and understanding

a) He was getting old and gradually losing his sight, b) We all enjoyed seeing the sights of the capital, c) The village was still a long way off. d) The way lay across the field, e) She plays the piano with feeling, f) He had a sudden feeling of hunger., etc.

3. Определение совпадения или противоположности мнений в репликах на уровне предложения (аудирование).

Listen to the pairs of sentences. Show your red card if the opinionsarenearly the same and your blue card if the opinions are opposed toeachother:

a) I am fed up with sightseeing. - I am sick and tired of sightseeing. b) It is unnatural for one to leave home and seek adventure far away. -There is nothing in life like a sightseeing tour. c) Air transport is really safe. - There are more road casualties per day than air deaths per year. d) It is obvious that television brings the world into your home. - It is obvious that television limits your outlook because it keeps you at home., etc.

4. Управляемый парафраз на уровне предложения.

Look through the sentences you've just had for aural comprehension. Find the cases where the speakers disagree. Express your agreementwithone of the speakers using the vocabulary of the other speakerand changing the sentence according to your purpose. E.g.:

" A telephone talk saves a lot of time, compared to letter-writing." " Just think of the amount of time wasted on idle telephone talks! "

" I agree with the first speaker. Just think of the amount of time wasted on letter-writing! "

5. Составление связных микромонологов на основе комбинирования с учетом сходства или противоположности точек зрения.

Make up two short monologues combining the sentences below. In one of them you should be quite confident of what you say (" For one thing, "... ", " Besides, ...", " And to finish with, ... " ), and in the second monologue your hesitation should be obvious (" On the one hand,...", " But on the other hand,..." ).

You should(n't) watch TV every day.   There are many interesting things on TV. Your eyes get very tired. Most television programmes can't leave one indifferent. Advertisements can drive one crazy. Television is a very good pastime. It prevents one from doing so many things! It keeps one in the know. You should spend more time in the open to keep fit., etc.

6. Свободный парафраз, выполнение которого в некоторой степени подготовлено предыдущей тренировкой в плане лексики и полностью подготовлено в плане интеллектуальных операций, таких, как выбор, сопоставление, принятие решения, переструктурирование.

Render each of the following ideas in as many ways as possible:

a) There is nothing like camping, b) A visit to the cinema is the best way to spend a few idle hours, c) I can't so much as stand the sight of an aeroplane!

7. Условно-коммуникативные микродиалоги с выражением согласия/несогласия по поводу каждой из заданных инициативных реплик.

Express your agreement or disagreement with the following statements paraphrasing each sentence and adding a sentence or two. Change parts. E.g.:

" People should develop the habit of reading while they are still young." " I quite agree. People should fall into the habit of reading when they are children. They shouldn't give all their free time to television. And it's the parents who ought to set a good example to their children."

A. Watching TV is a waste of time because most programs are bad.

Television turns people into passive listeners and observers.

Why tire yourself travelling when you can learn even more staying at home?

B. When travelling together, people soon get tired of their fellow-travellers.

There is much truth in the saying " East or West, home is best."

It's much safer to see everything with one's own eyes.

8. Монологическое высказывание по проблеме.

Express your own ideas as to the value of travelling as a pastime.

9. Групповая беседа (или дискуссия в парах).

Express your attitudes to television as a pastime. Were people any happier before it was invented?

You will learn to explain the meaning of words, to group vocabulary units according to the difficulties they may present to a Russian learner, and to explain phenomena to people according to the level of the audience. You may do it in two ways: a) by simplifying your explanation; b) by making people discover the complicated nature of things.

1. Классификация словарных единиц по трудности запоминания значения и употребления.

Group the following words according to the study-efforts a Russian learner would make: Land, ocean, earth, experiment, influence, wave, depend, gravitation, geology, calculate, surface, accordingly, accurate, space, attract.

Group 1. The word in English has practically the same scopeofmeaning as the one in Russian: e.g., a spoon, to swim.

Group 2. The word in English has several meanings; its scope of meaning is wider than that of the Russian word: e.g., get = receive, reach some place, become, understand, make smb. do smth.

Group 3. Two or more words in English are translated by the same word in Russian (their meaning is narrower than in Russian), so the Russian word has to be interpreted to be translated correctly: e.g., «узнавать» - to identify a person by his appearance = to recognize; to receive information = to learn; to look for information and get it = to find out.

Group 4. The difficulty lies in the specific form or usage of the word which may cause a Russian learner to make a grammar mistake (in the preposition, number, etc.): the usage of " money" with a verb in the plural form or the usage of " under the rain " instead of " in the rain ", etc.

A word may belong to more than one group!

2. Объяснение учащимися на основе заранее изученных комментариев к лексическим единицам по учебнику слов, значение которых уже или шире, чем в родном языке.

3. Объяснение учащимися особенностей употребления слов, принадлежащих к группе 4.

4. Объяснение намеренного использования контекстуальной многозначности слов для создания юмористического эффекта.

Reproduce the following jokes and explain what the humour of each joke depends on.

a) TAXI-DRIVER: It's not the work I enjoy. It's the people I run into.

b) The driver is safer when the road is dry; the road is safer when the driver is dry., etc.

5. Аналогичное задание на уровне связного текста, что обусловливает большую самостоятельность выявления средств юмористического воздействия.

Reproduce the piece of the dialogue. Then explain the humour and say how this device of the author characterizes Augustus.

THE CLERK: Are you engaged?

AUGUSTUS: What business is that of yours? However, if you will take the trouble to read the society papers for this week, you will see that I am engaged to the Honourable Lucy Popham, youngest daughter of-

THE CLERK: That isn't what I mean. Can you see a female?

AUGUSTUS: Of course, I can see a female as easily as a male.Doyou suppose that I am blind? (B. Shaw)

6. Суммирование информативного текста учебника, основанного на вокабуляре, представленном в задании 1. " Earth Land Masses Rise 12 Inches Twice a Day." (См.: [19]).

7. Отбор из текста понятий, требующих комментария, и их объяснение с применением словаря, представленного в задании 1.

What notions are to be explained to schoolchildren of ten if they are to listen to a lecture on the subject? Explain the necessary notions (such as " tide", " gravitation", etc.)

8. Сопоставление дефиниции со связным текстом, трактующим то же явление для менее подготовленной аудитории.

Read the following definition of an earthquake:

EARTHQUAKE - sudden violent movement of the earth's surface due to volcanic action or to the shifting of the deeper layers inside the planet, often resulting in the destruction of buildings and killing of people.

Compare the definition with the following text which is meant to explain the same notion to children. Are all the characteristics rendered adequately or are some of them omitted in the text or in the definition?

Earthquakes

Some countries have large numbers of earthquakes. Japan is one of them. Others do not have many; for example, there are few earthquakes in Britain. There is often a great noise during an earthquake. The ground vibrates. Houses fall down. Railway lines are broken. Trains run off the lines. Sometimes thousands of people are killed in different ways. About 60, 000 were killed in 1783 in South Italy.

Earthquakes often happen near volcanoes, but this is not always true. The centres of some of them are under the sea. The bottom of the sea suddenly moves. The powerful forces inside the earth break the rocks. The coast is shaken and great waves appear. These waves travel long distances and rush over the land when they reach it. They are strong enough to break down houses and other buildings; sometimes they break more buildings than the earthquake itself.

9. Адаптация текста с учетом адресата.

You may have noticed that in the text above the manner of explaining things is quite simple. The sentences are short, and there are practically no terms that might need further comment.

Simplify the text from the textbook (" Earth Land MassesRise 12 Inches Twice a Day" ) according to the same pattern.

10. Первый вариант. Сообщение учащимися дополнительной информации, касающейся аналогичных объектов.

Add whatever you think is necessary to the information given in the second text about natural disasters. If you don't know a term naming some notion, try to express its essence by giving a definition or adescription - in the same way as it is done in the text.

Второй вариант. Комментирование содержания и основной мысли стихотворения по той же тематике, что и текст.

Sand Dunes   Sea waves are green and wet, But up from where they lie, Rise others vaster yet, And those are brown and dry.   They are the sea made land To come at the fisher town, And bury in solid sand The men she could not drown.   She may know cove and cape, But she does not know mankind If by any chance of shape She hopes to cut off mind.   Men left her a ship to sink, They may leave her a hut as well; And be but more free to think For the one more cast-off shell.

Параллельно совершенствуется навык использования сослагательного наклонения в конструкции с as if, as though. Данное занятие соответствует концу II курса языкового вуза. Основные интеллектуальные операции - опознавание, конструирование, набор, выбор, анализ.

Структура занятия

The aim of the lesson is to teach you to use the Absolute Construction and subjunctive forms in written speech in order to create a definite image.

1. Ознакомление с информацией о назначении и основной грамматической особенности «абсолютной конструкции» и суммирование полученных сведений с опорой на вопросы.

Read the following information, say which of the questions below it answers and give answers to these questions.

Absolute constructions usually present things existing at the same time as those of the sentences to which they are related. They imply " while": " Nick climbed out of the meadow and stood, (while) water (was) running down his trousers and out of his shoes." (E. Hemingway).

Elimination of needless predications saves words, and in doing so, it emphasizes the meanings expressed by the remaining predications. The sentences become more tightly united, and if only one predicate remains, its importance is established. At the same time, absolute constructions create images by giving vivid details qualifying an object or an action.

1) What are the different types of absolute constructions?

2)Do absolute constructions stress simultaneity or priority?

3) What do we eliminate unnecessary predications for?

4) What is the effect produced by details which are expressed by absolute constructions? (Поскольку информация не содержит ответа на первый вопрос, создается своеобразная психологическая «ловушка», т.е. установка на восприятие дополнительной информации, что облегчает переход к заданию 2.)

2. Ознакомление с информацией о типах «абсолютной конструкции» и подбор примеров, иллюстрирующих каждый тип.

The participle construction is not the only one that is used to express the meaning of simultaneity. All the absolute constructions (AC) are common in narrative, because they characterize actions laying stress on the main one, to which all the other characteristics belong. Thus, we may have:

a noun AC: He dressed slowly, the softness of his shirt a reward against his skin;

a pronoun AC: They ate in silence, the only sound that of the clicking knives and sweeping spoons;

an adverb AC: Aporter came out from under the shelterи the station, his shoulders up against the rain;

a " like " -phrase: He slowly turns, his eyes like those of a dead fish;

an adjective AC: She looked at him, her eyes bright with happiness.

Provide other examples of various types of absolute constructions, including those with participles. Use the textbook [19, pp. 235-237].

3. Составление предложений с «абсолютной конструкцией» из двух или более простых предложений. Уточнение функции самостоятельного оборота.

Make up one sentence of each group of sentences using ACs. The firstsentence should be the main one. (Look up and say! )

Then say if this or that AC is used to create an image of:

a) an action; b) the way a person looks; c) the way a person feels; d) the way a thing or natural phenomenon looks.

1) She held the table cloth carefully. It was delicate hand-made lace. It was spread over her outstretched fingers.

2) The first performance of the movie was sold out. Ticket holders waited restlessly in the lobby for a second show. Ushers tried to keep them in line.

3) They came home from their fishing trip disgusted. Their clothes were soaked. Their bones were chilled. Their hands were empty.

4) Apple trees blossomed in the dusk. The last of daylight was seemingly sucked up into their white petals.

4. Набор словосочетаний из списка согласно заданным коммуникативным намерениям.

Which of the following phrases may characterize a person: a) deep in thought; b) hesitant; c) obsessed with grief; d) irritated? Which of them are ACs (= Which ones possess a subject of their own)?

Anxious and puzzled; his lips closed in a sad grimness; his eyes glaring behind his spectacles; as if balancing himself on his feet with great effort, absorbed in something that was quite beyond me; (with) his hands shoved down in his coat pockets; as if in doubt about something; wandering up and down the street; (with) his arms folded; speaking in a voice as dry as a biscuit; like a caged lion; as if torn with inner conflict, etc.

5. Составление высказываний по подстановочной таблице с целью создать образ человека, адекватный манере его поведения. (По направленности на создание образного высказывания задание связано с предыдущим, по материалу же оно направлено на становление нового навыка и совершенствование сформированных ранее, т.е. оборотов as if, as though.)

With her back against the wall,       as if he (she)'d lost something.
    as if the burden of the whole world were on his (her) shoulders.
With her eyes on the ground,
    like a caged animal.
His hands shoved in his coat pockets,   she (he)   as if he (she)'d never had a day's worry.
looked   as if there were no more hope for him (her).
His face buried in his hands,       as if he (she) didn't care about anything in the world.

His (Her) eyes staring into nothingness,       as if he (she) were on the verge of some great discovery.

6. Перевод с русского языка на английский с ключом для обучения быстрому структурированию предложений с «абсолютной конструкцией» и с сослагательным наклонением.

Она ведет себя так, как будто автомобиль принадлежит ей. Она отвернулась, и на глаза у нее навернулись слезы.   She behaves as if she actually owned the car. She turned away, her eyes full of tears.

(И т. п., 8-12 предложений.)

7. Завершение предложений с использованием самостоятельных оборотов или сравнительных сослагательных конструкций с целью создания образа.

Complete the sentences characterizing the given actions or states:

a) He watched the tennis match, his head (eyes, etc.)...

b) The teacher demonstrated the beginning position of the exercise, his arms...

c) Her hair almost gray and her face..., he failed to recognize her.

d) She looked this way and that, as if..., etc.

8. Ознакомление с двумя-тремя отрывками из художественной прозы, чтение вслух выбранного отрывка, объяснение эффекта, к которому стремился автор, и роли использованных языковых средств в создании образа. (Языковые средства не сводятся к «абсолютной конструкции», но она должна быть одним из основных способов.)

a) Не was young. And Byron watched him standing there and looking at the men in sweatened overalls, with a cigarette in one side of his mouth, and his face darkly and contemptuously still, drawn down a little on one side because of the smoke. (After W. Faulkner. Light in August)

b) The sun being mild, George had thrown off his hat, and his black hair was moist and twisted into confused half-curls. Firmly planted, he swung with a beautiful rhythm from the waist. His shirt, faded almost white, was torn just above the belt, the muscles of his back playing like lights upon the white sand of a brook. (After D.H.Lawrence. The White Peacock.)

9. Составление и зачитывание собственных связных письменных высказываний, призванных создать заданный образ (с последующим обсуждением).

Choose one of the following phrases and develop it into a description detailed enough to create an impression of:

a) a person obsessed with grief; b) a person on the point of making an important decision; c) a person (people) excited by something; d) a person deep in thought; e) a person (people) frightened by something.

• Her face betrayed the mood she was in,...

• People crowded all over the place,...

• He walked through endless corridors,...

• He sat motionless in his armchair, ...
