John: Did you fly there?

John: Did you feel nervous?

Nick: Not a. bit. Just excited.

John: Did you get into the plane straight away?

Nick: Oh, no. First I had to check in my luggage. If your luggage is overweight you have to pay

If you travel on business you can stop at a business hotel, for example Hotel Cosmos or the

President Hotel in Moscow. These types of hotels have everything for businessmen: more than

20 conference halls, banquet halls and showrooms. Every businessman can use satellite

communications, satellite TV, Internet. Every room has a telephone, a minibar, a safe, an airconditioner

and many other services. Of course there are many restaurants, casinos, bowling

halls, night clubs, fitness clubs where one can have some fun. All hotels of this type have a

highly qualified guard.

If you travel for pleasure you can find not very expensive, but very comfortable hotels to stop

there. These hotels have all modern conveniences and very cozy rooms. Usually there are many

double rooms and some single ones. There is a bathroom and a TVset in every room. There is

a phone too. Every hotel has a receptionist’s desk where you can get all the necessary

information, leave your key and use a safe for your money and documents. There is a hall

The usual meals in Russia are breakfast dinner and supper. As a rule people have breakfast at

7 or 8 o'clock in the morning. Russians like fried or boiled potatoes with some sausage or ham

or a chop (cutlet). Sometimes we prefer an omelet, boiled or fried eggs or just some porridge (a

plate of boiled rice, semolina, buckwheat porridge), or vermicelli (macaroni), fruit dumplings or

curdfritters.

Children and grownups are fond of pancakes and fritters with butter and jam. Then you have a

cup of tea with milk or lemon or coffee (strong, weak, black, white, with cream) and a couple of

ham and cheese sandwiches or slices of bread and butter. At about 1:00 or 2:00 p. m. we have

dinner. It often consists of 3 courses.

For the Ist course we eat chicken soup or cabbage soup (shchi), or beetroot and cabbage soup

(borsch), noodle soup or just broth. Some people choose mushroom soup or fishsoup. In spring

and summer when it's hot it's so nice to have the socalled "okroshka", a traditional Russian dish

(cold kvass soup with chopped vegetables and meat or fish), a kind of hodgepodge.

Businessmen who are going to do business with Japanese firms must know that the Japanese

are very sensitive people and not impressed by what is popular in Europe and particularly in the

US, like backslapping, handpumping, and the European and American sense of humour.

The Japanese are very serious about business and any attempt to brighten the atmosphere of

business talks with a joke or an anecdote will almost certainly be interpreted as improper.

Westerners often make the mistake if handing Japanese highly colored cards, which are offputting

to the Japanese.

In Japan it is considered proper that the cards should be simple and the individual name should

be in smaller letters than the name of the company.

Exchanging gifts is a part of everyday Japanese life and foreign visitors should come around

with a number of souvenirs of their country or company. The space they occupy in the suitcase

will be filled, on the return journey, with similar souvenirs from the Japanese.

Gardening is English national favourite pastime and hobby. Most English people love gardens,

their own above all, and this is probably the reason why so many people prefer to live in houses

rather than flats. Particularly in suburban areas it is possible to pass row after row of ordinary

small houses, each one with its neatlykept patch of grass surrounded by a great variety of

flowers and shrubs.

Although the task of keeping a garden is so essentially individual, for many people gardening is

the foundation of social and competitive relationships. Flowershows and vegetableshows, with

prizes for the best exhibits, are immensely popular, and to many gardeners the process of

growing the plants seems more important than the merely aesthetic pleasure of looking at the

flowers or the prospect of eating the vegetables.

The gardening industry in Great Britain is growing. Gardeners are spending more and more on

garden furniture and barbecues.

For breakfast Englishmen often have porridge or cornflakes with milk or cream and sugar, bacon

and eggs, jam with buttered toasts and tea or coffee. For a change they can have a boiled egg,

cold ham, or fish.

English people usually have lunch about one o'clock. At lunch time in a London restaurant you

can have a mutton chop, or steak and chips, or cold meat or fish with potatoes and salad, then a

pudding or fruit.

Afternoon tea can hardly be called a meal. It is a substantial meal only in welltodo families. It is

between five and six o'clock. It is rather a sociable sort of thing as friends often come for a chat

(поболтать) while they have their cup of tea, cake or biscuit.

In some houses dinner is the biggest meal of the day. But in great many English homes, the

midday meal is chief one of the day, and in the evening there is usually a much simpler supper

— an omelette, or sausages, sometimes bacon and eggs and sometimes just bread and

cheese, a cup of coffee or cocoa and fruit.

Centuries ago, where the River Thames near London Bridge was slowed down by the narrow

piers allowing the water to freeze, the ice often reached a depth of several inches. But in the

heavy frosts in the seventeenth century, the ice was quite safe to walk on and frost fairs were

held on the river. Open stages and platforms were erected for all kinds of performance and

entertainment, with penny booths, stalls and tents for refreshments. Even whole oxen were

roasted. Large crowds walking over the ice joined the festivities. Contemporary painting shows

that these fairs took place for many years. In fact, in 1698 the frost was so severe that a coach

and six horses was driven right across the river. This was all good fun for the Londoners, but it

was a difficult time for those whose life depended on the river. Thames ferrymen and watermen

were put out of business. Milder winters that followed put an end to these festivities.
