Mother: Ann, will you please, do the shopping today? I'm very busy.

Ann:Of course, I shall. What am I to buy?

Mother: We are going to have a festive dinner tomorrow. Your Aunt Liza and uncle Roger

promised to come and see us.

Ann? What are you going to cook? Shall we have anything special?

Mother: For the first course I want to make clear soup. Will you buy some beef, please, but

mind, it shouldn't be very fat.

Ann:Shall I buy anything else at the butcher's?

Mother: If they have lean mutton, buy 2 kilos, please, I'll make mutton chops for the second

course. I'm afraid we've run out of potatoes and tomatoes. Drop in at the greengrocer's and get

2 kilos of potatoes and one of tomatoes.

Ann:Is that all? Beef, 2 kilos of mutton, 2 kilos of potatoes and 1 kilo of tomatoes.

Mother: Oh, dear, you won't be able to carry all that, I'll ask Mike to help you. Mike, will you

please, go with Ann and help her with the shopping?

Mike: Certainly, if she buys me an ice cream.

Mother: That reminds me. Will you look in at the cake shop and buy a chocolate cake? Aunt Liza

is very fond of it. That seems to be all. Here is the money.

Ann:Mike, take the shopping bag and off we go.

Customer: I'd like a summer frock.

Shopgirl: Certainly. What size?

Customer: 46. I'm stock size.

Shopgirl: The dresses on that rail are all size 46. Look at them and you may find something to

your taste.

Customer: May I try on this cotton dress? Does it fit me?

Shopgirl: It fits you perfectly but I don't think the colour becomes you. It's too dark.

Customer: Have you got anything a shade lighter?

Shopgirl: I'm afraid, we haven't. Would you mind trying on this lightblue?

Customer:But it's not genuine silk. It's too hot for summer wear.

Shopgirl: Will you drop in a couple of days? We are expecting most of our summer stock at the

end of the week.

Customer: Yes, of course. Thank you. Goodbye.

Shopgirl: Thank you. Have a nice day.

Gardening is English national favourite pastime and hobby. Most English people love gardens,

their own above all, and this is probably the reason why so many people prefer to live in houses

rather than flats. Particularly in suburban areas it is possible to pass row after row of ordinary

small houses, each one with its neatlykept patch of grass surrounded by a great variety of

flowers and shrubs.

Although the task of keeping a garden is so essentially individual, for many people gardening is

the foundation of social and competitive relationships. Flowershows and vegetableshows, with

prizes for the best exhibits, are immensely popular, and to many gardeners the process of

growing the plants seems more important than the merely aesthetic pleasure of looking at the

flowers or the prospect of eating the vegetables.

The gardening industry in Great Britain is growing. Gardeners are spending more and more on

garden furniture and barbecues.

In general social customs which are considered polite abroad are respected in the USA.

Casual friendliness is characteristic for Americans and should not be mistaken for closed

friendship, which is usually developed over a period of time. Americans call each other by their

first names much sooner and more often than do people of most other countries. It may take

you a little time to learn some of the American small manners and customs.

Americans usually shake hands when they meet, but a man does not shake a woman’s hand

unless she offers it to him.

Introductions are simple: “Mr. Smith, Mr. Crown”, or “Bob Smith, John Crown,” or “Bob, John”.

For a more formal introduction, you may say, “Mr. Smith, may I introduce Mr. Crown?” When

you are introduced to someone you usually say “How do you do?” or “It’s nice to meet you”. You

can say a simple “Hello” to an informal introduction. When you introduce a man to a woman, say

the woman’s name first.
