Turgenev Вопрос №60 Centuries ago, where the River Thames near London Bridge was slowed down by the narrow piers allowing the water to freeze, the ice often reached a depth of several inches. But in the heavy frosts in the seventeenth century, the ice was quite safe to walk on and frost fairs were held on the river. Open stages and platforms were erected for all kinds of performance and entertainment, with penny booths, stalls and tents for refreshments. Even whole oxen were roasted. Large crowds walking over the ice joined the festivities. Contemporary painting shows that these fairs took place for many years. In fact, in 1698 the frost was so severe that a coach and six horses was driven right across the river. This was all good fun for the Londoners, but it was a difficult time for those whose life depended on the river. Thames ferrymen and watermen were put out of business. Milder winters that followed put an end to these festivities. Climate in England Вопрос №20 Receptionist: Good afternoon, sir. Mr. Hunt: Good afternoon. Is this the Beardsley Hotel?
