Методические указания

Пояснительная записка

 

Основной целью данного методического пособия является информирование студентов заочной формы обучения об изучаемой дисциплине «Английский язык».

Данные методические указания содержат тематический план, перечень контрольных работ, вопросы к дифференцированному зачету, требования к их выполнению, списки литературы.

Контроль над освоением учебного материала осуществляется в форме контрольной работы № 1, 2, 3 текущего контроля во время сессии.

Методические указания составлены на основе рабочей программы по данной дисциплине.

 

Требования к контрольным работам

Контрольные работы по дисциплине «Английский язык» по специальности 51.02.02 «Социально-культурная деятельность» выполняются в обычной ученической тетради или на листах формата А4 в печатном варианте. Предполагается сделать письменный перевод текста, выполнение грамматических заданий, развернутые письменные ответы по заданным вопросам.

GREAT BRITAIN

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland consists of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. It lies on the British Isles. Great Britain and Ireland are the largest islands and there are about five thousands small islands.

The North Sea, the Strait of Dover and the English Channel separate Great Britain from the continent.

The surface of the British Isles varies very much. The north of Scotland is mountainous and is called the Highlands, while the south, which has beautiful valleys and plains, is called Lowlands. There are numerous lakes in Scotland and they are called Lochs.

The north and west of England are mountainous but all the rest - east, centre and south-east is a vast plain. The South England plain is the richest, the most fertile and most populated in the country. In the south-east one can see the most beautiful scenery in England and the largest fruit-producing county Kent which is often called " The Garden of England".

The mountains in Great Britain are not very high.

There are many rivers in Great Britain but they are not very long. The Severn is the longest river, while the Thames, which flows through rich agricultural districts into the North Sea, is the busiest and the most important river in England.

The climate of Great Britain is mild. The Atlantic Ocean and the warm waters of the Gulf Stream influence the weather on the British Isles. The summers are cool and rainy. It is not so hot in England as on the continent. July is the warmest month. The average July temperature in the south-east is 17°C, and in the north-west it is I4°C. There is much rain and fog in autumn and in winter. October is often the rainiest month of the year. Snow is rare and it does not lie on the ground for long. The average January temperature is above 5°C above zero. February is the coldest month in Great Britain. But, of course, the climate is different in different parts of England.

New York

New York, founded three hundred years ago in the mouth of the Hudson River, is now one of the largest cities in the world.

The center of New York is Manhattan Island. In 1626 it was bought from the Indians for a sum of twenty-four dollars. Calling Manhattan the center of business and commercial life of the country, one can’t be mistaken. One can often see people admiring high skyscrapers, huge banks and offices of American businessmen there. Broadway begins in this part, the Stock Exchange is located here. Taken into consideration the fact that the majority of people work here, very few of them live in this place. Numerous bridges link Manhattan Island with the other parts of New York.

New York is inhabited by people of almost all nationalities. It is even called “Modern Babylon”. Having come to the USA from different countries, people often live together, in the same district according to their nationalities. They entered America through New York-the Gateway of the USA.

New York is known as one of the leading manufacturing cities in the world. Producing paper products, vehicles, glass, chemicals, machinery makes New York an industrial city.

Among the places of interest that people like visiting is New York Public Library, the biggest library in New York. It also houses exhibition rooms and two art galleries. The geographic center of New York is Columbus Circle, in the center of which is Memorial to Christopher Columbus.

Everyone thinks, that visiting New York is unforgettable!

The Statue of Liberty

One of the most famous statues in the world stands on an island in New York Harbor. This statue is, of course, the Statue of Liberty. It represents a woman who holds a torch up high. She symbolizes a welcome to a land of freedom. Visitors can go inside the statue. The statue is so large that as many as twelve people can stand inside the torch. Many more people can stand in other parts of the statue. The statue weighs 225 tons and is 301 feet tall.

The Statue of Liberty was put up in 1886. It was a gift to the United States from the people of France. Over the years France and the United States had a special relationship.

Laboulaye was a well-known Frenchman who admired the USA. One night at a dinner in his house, Laboulaye was talking about the idea of the a gift. Among guests was the French sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. Bartholdi had thought of a statue of liberty. So, he offered to design the statue.

Many people contributed in some way. The French people gave money for the statue. Americans designed and built the pedestal for the statue to stand on. The American people raised money to pay for the pedestal. The French engineer Alexander Eiffel, who was famous for his Eiffel Tower in Paris, figured out how to make the heavy statue stand.

Christmas in Great Britain

For most British families, this is the most important festival of the year. This is the day when many people are travelling home to be with their families on Christmas Day. If you try to catch a train on 24th December you may have difficulty in finding a seat. There are a lot of traditions connected with Christmas but the most important one is the giving of presents. Family members wrap up their gifts and leave them at the bottom of the Christmas tree to be found on Christmas morning. At some time on Christmas Day the family will sit down to a big turkey dinner followed by Christmas pudding. In the afternoon they may watch the Queen on the television as she delivers her traditional Christmas message to the United Kingdom and Commonwealth. Then they enjoy a piece of Christmas cake or eat a hot mince pie. On Sunday before Christmas many churches hold a service where special hymns are sung. Sometimes singers can be heard on the streets as they collect money for charity. Most families decorate their houses with brightly-coloured paper or holly, and they usually have a Christmas tree in the corner of the room, glittering with coloured lights and decoration. 26th December is also a public holiday, called Boxing Day. This is the time to visit friends and relatives or be a spectator at one of the many sporting events.

Everyone in Great Britain is waiting and enjoying this holiday very much!

St Valentine’s Day

St Valentine’s Day comes on February 14. It is not a legal or a national holiday. Banks and offices are not closed, but it is a happy little festival for young people. It is widely celebrated among people of all ages by exchange of “valentines”. A “valentine” may mean a special greeting-card or a little present. It may be for the person who receives the gift. St Valentine is the patron of sweethearts. February 14 is the anniversary of his death. The day is the time to send little gifts to those you love. Flowers and candy are favourite presents which sweethearts send to each other. Valentine candy is packed in red heart-shaped boxes and sold for this one day. Valentines are special greeting cards. They are often coloured red, have red trimmings and pictures of hearts. Some “valentines” are very fancy, they are trimmed with paper lace and little bows of paper ribbon. They have verses of love poetry printed on them. It is a good day for parties, especially by young people. The hosts trim the hall with red and white paper hearts. Refreshments are often coloured red, like red candy and punch. Sandwiches and cakes are often cut in the shape of hearts. Sometimes, a King and Queen of Hearts are chosen for the evening of dance.

Thanksgiving Day

There is one day a year when all Americans stay home with their families and eat a big dinner. This is Thanksgiving Day.

The pilgrims celebrated the first Thanksgiving Day in the fall of 1621. The pilgrims sailed to America on board the “Mayflower” ship for religious freedom. They were among the first European settlers in America. There were people living in America before the pilgrims arrived. These people were the Native American Indians.

The pilgrims first winter in the New World was very difficult. They had arrived too late to grow many crops. Without fresh food half of the pilgrims died. The following spring the Indians taught the pilgrims how to hunt, fish, plant and survive in America. The crops did well and in the fall of 1621 pilgrims had a great harvest. They were thankful and decided to celebrate with a Thanksgiving feast. They prepared a dinner of turkey, corn, beans and pumpkins. They invited their Indian friends to share this feast. The Indians brought food for the feast too (they even brought popcorn! )

Americans still celebrate Thanksgiving Day in the fall. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. Turkey is still the main dish and pumpkin pie is the most popular dessert.
