Fast Food

“Fast food” is the term given to food that can be prepared and served very quickly. While any meal with low preparation time can be considered fast food, typically the term refers to food sold in a restaurant or store with preheated or precooked ingredients, and usually served to the customer in a packaged form for take-away.

Fast food may be sold in fast food restaurants (also known as quick service restaurants) or in stands providing no shelter or seating.

Common menu items at fast food outlets include fish and chips, sandwiches, pitas, hamburgers, fried chicken, French fries, chicken nuggets, pizza, hot dogs, and ice cream. Although many fast food restaurants offer " slower" foods such as mashed potatoes or salads.

The history of ready-cooked food for sale is closely connected with urban development. In Ancient Rome cities had street stands that sold bread and wine. In the Middle Ages, large towns such as London and Paris supported numerous vendors that sold dishes such as pies, pasties, flans, waffles, pancakes and cooked meat dishes. As automobiles became popular drive-in restaurants were introduced. In drive-ins cars park next to each other and the food is brought to the window by a server, called a carhop. The customer can remain in the parked car to eat.

Nowadays the United States has the largest fast food industry in the world, and American fast food restaurants are located in over 100 countries. Approximately 2 million U.S. workers are employed in the areas of food preparation and food service including fast food in the USA.

McDonald's

McDonald's Corporation is the world's largest chain of fast food restaurants, serving more than 58 million customers daily.

McDonald's primarily sells hamburgers, cheeseburgers, chicken products, French fries, breakfast items, soft drinks, shakes, and desserts. In response to nationwide health campaign the company has changed its menu which now includes healthier alternatives such as salads, wraps and fruit.

Sierra Vista, Arizona, was the first city in which the first McDonald's drive-through restaurant was built. It was created in 1975 near Fort Huachuca, a military base located adjacent to the city - to serve soldiers who weren’t permitted to get out of their cars while wearing fatigues. A drive-through is a type of service that allows customers to buy food without leaving their cars. The cars create a line and move in one direction. Orders are placed using a microphone and picked up in person at the window.

In Spain and Russia, McDonald's drive-through services are often called McAuto.
