ক ৃ ষ ্ ণ ন া ম -র ূ প -গ ু ণ -ল ী ল া চ ত ু ষ ্ ট য ় ।
উ প ম া ম ি শ ্ র ি র স হ স ্ ব া দ ত ু ল ্ য হ য ় ॥ ১ ॥

krsna-nama-rupa-guna-lila chatustaya
upama misrira saha svada tulya haya [1]

krsna –Krishna’s nama –Name, rupa –Form, guna –Qualities, [and] lila –Pastimes— [these] chatustaya –four haya –are tulya –comparable, upama –by analogy, saha –to svada –the taste misrira –of sugar candy. [1]

Krishna’s Name, Form, Qualities, and Pastimes are comparable, by analogy, to the taste of sugar candy.

অ ব ি দ ্ য া প ি ত ্ ত ে র ত ু ল ্ য ত া ত ে জ ি হ ্ ব া ত প ্ ত ।
জ ি হ ্ ব া র আ স ্ ব া দ -শ ক ্ ত ি ত প ্ ত হ ে ত ু স ু প ্ ত ॥ ২ ॥

avidya pittera tulya tate jihva tapta
jihvara asvada-sakti tapta-hetu supta [2]

avidya –Ignorance [is] tulya –comparable pittera –to jaundice tate –by which jihva –the tongue [is] tapta –infected. hetu –Because tapta –of [this] infection, jihvara –the tongue’s sakti –power asvada –to taste [goes] supta –dormant. [2]

Ignorance is comparable to jaundice, which infects the tongue. Because of this infection, the tongue’s power to taste goes dormant.

অ প ্ র া ক ৃ ত -জ ্ ঞ া ন ে য দ ি ল ও স ে ই ন া ম ।
ন ি র ন ্ ত র ন া ম ল ৈ ল ে ছ া ড ় ে প ী ড ় া ধ া ম ॥ ৩ ॥

aprakrta-jnane yadi lao sei nama
nirantara nama laile chhade pida-dhama [3]

yadi –If lao –you take sei –the nama –Name jnane –with the understanding [that the Name is] aprakrta –supramundane, [and] laile –if you take nama –the Name nirantara –constantly, [then] chhade –you will be able to get rid dhama –of the cause pida –of this disease. [3]

If you chant the Name with the understanding that the Name is supramundane, and you chant the Name constantly, then you will be able to get rid of this disease.

ন া ম -ম ি শ ্ র ি ক ্ র ম ে ক ্ র ম ে ব া স ন া শ ম ি য ় া ।
ন া ম ে র ু চ ি ক র া ই ব ে ক ল ্ য া ণ আ ন ি য ় া ॥ ৪ ॥

nama-misri krame krame vasana samiya
name ruchi karaibe kalyana aniya [4]

misri –The sugar candy nama –of the Name [will] krame krame –gradually samiya –pacify [your] vasana –desires, ruchi karaibe –cause [you] to taste name –the Name, [and] aniya –bring [you all] kalyana –good fortune. [4]

The sugar candy of the Name will gradually pacify your desires, give you taste for the Name, and bring you all good fortune.

Krishna’s Name, Pastimes, and so forth are comparable to sugar candy, and ignorance is comparable to jaundice. As even very sweet sugar candy is not tasty to a tongue afflicted with jaundice, so even the very sweet, tasty sugar candy of Krishna’s Name, Pastimes, and so forth, are not pleasing to a soul who has been enveloped in beginning-less ignorance as a result of aversion to Krishna. If, however, the sugar candy of Krishna’s Name, Pastimes, and so forth, is honoured constantly with faith, then gradually this sugar candy becomes increasingly tasty and the disease of material enjoyment—desire that is averse to Krishna—goes away.

tach ched deha-dravina-janata-lobha-pasanda-madhye
niksiptam syan na phala-janakam sighram evatra vipra
(Sri Padma-purana)

[“O brahman, if the Name is used for the body, wealth, prestige, greed, or evil, then the Name does not produce any quick results.”]

Controlled by ignorance and thus attributing great importance to the body, wealth, prestige, attachment, and the misconception that the Lord and His absence—maya—are nondifferent, souls are unable to understand their own true self. By the power of Krishna’s Name, the soul’s pride produced by ignorance disappears like fog, and service to Krishna then becomes pleasing.



Bhajana-lalasa

hari he!
tomare bhuliya avidya-pidaya
pidita rasana mora
krsna-nama-sudha bhala nahi lage
visaya-sukhete bhora [1]

O Lord! Forgetting You, my tongue, afflicted by the jaundice of ignorance, does not like the nectar of Krishna’s Name and is engrossed in material pleasures.

prati-dina yadi adara kariya
se nama kirtana kari
sitapala yena nasi’ roga-mula
krame svadu haya, hari [2]

If I chant Your Name every day with faith, however, like sugar candy Your Name will destroy the cause of my disease and gradually become tasteful, O Lord!

durdaiva amara se name adara
na ha-ila, dayamaya!
dasa aparadha amara durdaiva
kemane ha-ibe ksaya [3]

My misfortune is that I have never had faith in Your Name. O merciful Lord! How will these ten offences—my misfortune—ever come to an end?

anudina yena tava nama gai
kramete krpaya tava
aparadha yabe name ruchi habe
asvadiba namasaba [4]

Let me constantly chant Your Name. Then, gradually by Your mercy, my offences will go away, I will deveop taste for Your Name, and I will relish the Name’s nectar.














Verse Eight

त न ् न ा म र ू प च र ि त ा द ि स ु क ी र ् त न ा न ु -
स ् म ृ त ् य ो ः क ् र म े ण र स न ा म न स ी न ि य ो ज ् य ।
त ि ष ् ठ न ् व ् र ज े त द न ु र ा ग ि ज न ा न ु ग ा म ी
क ा ल ं न य े द ख ि ल म ि त ् य ु प द े श स ा र म ् ॥ ८ ॥

tan-nama-rupa-charitadi-sukirtananu-
smrtyoh kramena rasana-manasi niyojya
tisthan vraje tad-anuragi-jananugami
kalam nayed akhilam ity upadesa-saram [8]

niyojya –Engage rasana –the tongue [and] manasi –mind kramena –in the gradual process sukirtana –of complete glorification anusmrtyoh –and constant remembrance tan –of His nama –Name, rupa –Form, charita –Pastimes, adi –and so on, tisthan –reside vraje –in Vraja, [and] nayed –spend [your] kalam –time anugami –as a follower anuragi-jana –of those who have deep attachment tad –to Him. iti –This [is] saram –the essence akhilam –of all upadesa –instructions. [8]

Engage the tongue and mind
in the gradual process of chanting and remembering
Krishna’s Names, Forms, Pastimes, and so forth,
reside in Vraja, and spend all your time as a follower
of those who have deep attachment to Krishna.
This is the essence of all instructions.
