Fig. 1. Typical instruments and controls:
A – ignition/starter switch; В – light switch; C – tractor meter;. D – ignition warning light; E – engine oil warning light; F – transmission oil warning light; G – water temperature gauge; H – indicator warning light; J – fuel gauge; K – direction indicator switch; L – horn button; M – stop control. N – trailer indicator warning light; О – clutch pedal; P – brake pedals; Q – brake pedal latch; R – foot throttle; S – range lever; T – gear lever. 8. The temperature gauge gives the temperature of the engine cooling water. Some gauges have a red section to warn the driver if the engine overheats. 9. The oil pressure gauge registers the working pressure of the engine lubrication system. Not all tractors have an oil pressure gauge. 10. A fuel gauge is usually included on the instrument panel. 11. An air-flow meter is among the instruments on tractors with a dry element type air cleaner. It warns the driver of air flow to the engine caused by, a blocked air cleaner. 12. Warning lights on the instrument panel are three to draw the attention of the driver to a fault in the lubricating or charging systems. The ignition warning light comes on when the battery is not charging. It also shows the driver that the ignition is still on when the engine is not running.

Is the hand throttle used to select the required engine speed for the work in hand? 2. At what work is a foot throttle useful? 3. What is the intended use of a clutch pedal? 4. The clutch pedal is on the left of the driver's seat, isn’t it? 5. What are the main uses of the tractor-braking system? 6. Why are the gear levers used? 7. What are the basic hydraulic controlls? 8. What does the tractor meter record? 9. What is the intended use of the temperature gauge? 10. What is the intended use of the oil pressure gauge? 11. What is the intended use of the ignition warning light?

I. It is important for an engineer to know the functions of different devices. Name the functions of some devices you know.
II. Professor and his student are talking about the new equipment in the lab. Listen to their conversation and learn how to name measuring devices in English.
Helen: Professor, there is some new equipment in the lab, isn't there?
Professor: Yes, you are quite right.
Helen: I wonder what this thing is called?
Professor: A laser. It is known as a laser.
Helen: What is it used for?
Professor: It's used for producing a very powerful beam of light.
Helen: What are these?
Professor: As for these devices, they are known as pressure gauges. What are they used for? What do you think?
Helen: They are used for measuring pressure, aren't they?
Professor: Right you are. And this type of gauges is used for measuring low pressures.
III. Complete the dialogue.
1. – Listen, Ivan, is there any new … in the workshop?
– …
– Do you know what…?
– …
– What is this device … ?
–… for calculating.
– And these are used for …, aren't…?
