Using prefixes -1

Work in pairs. Prefixes can be used with words to alter their meaning. Look at the verbs in italic. What are the differences in meaning?

1. I arranged all these papers tidily on my desk, now someone has rearranged them all.

2. She told him she never wanted to see him again. She expected him to react sensibly, but he threw himself on the ground and started crying. He overreacted as usual.

3. I estimated the work would take five minutes, but I underestimated how difficult it would be.

Work in pairs. Prefixes can be used with words to change their meaning. Look at the words in italic. What do they mean?

1. Is 'the' the indefinite article or the definite article?

2. You'll certainly lose marks in the exam if your handwriting is illegible. And.untidyworkmay also lose marks.

3. Make sure the information you give is relevantto the question. Again, irrelevantinformation may lose you marks.

4. The children were told not to misbehavebut they disobeyedour instructions.

5. The students at the university called for a non-violent demonstration to express their disapproval of the government's education policy.
