TEXT 10 THE CURSE OF THE RING Rudolph Valentino was a famous film actor in the United States in the 1920s. He acted in silent films. They were called 'silent' because they had no sound. In 1922, Valentino went to a jeweller's shop to buy a ring. He saw a beautiful silver ring in the shop, but the jeweller did not want to sell it to him. 'It'll bring you bad luck, ’ he said. 'It has a curse on it’. 'I don't believe you, ’ Valentino replied. 'I don't believe in bad luck.’ He bought the ring and put it on. In the same year, Valentino made a film called ‘The Young Rajah'. For the first time in his life, he made a film that few people liked. Valentino put the ring away for several years. His next two films did well and Valentino forgot about the curse of the ring. Then, in 1926, he put the ring on again. Suddenly he fell ill, and a few hours later he died. Valentino left the ring to a friend in his will. As soon as she was given the ring, she fell ill. She gave the ring to a young artist called Russ Colombo, and she immediately got better. However, Mr. Colombo died when his car was in an accident. He had the ring on at the time. Then a thief stole the ring. A policeman, who had a gun, saw him. The policeman shot the gun into the air to frighten the thief, but he accidentally shot and killed him. By now, many people believed that the ring was dangerous. No one wanted to wear it. The ring was put in a bank. Although the bank had never had a robbery before, just after the ring arrived, thieves robbed the bank twice. In one robbery several people died. No one knows where the ring is now. No one wants to know!

The next most commonly spoken language, and the most widespread, is English, with an estimated 300 million native speakers. Nearly twice as many use it as a second or a third language. The English language contains about 490000 words plus another 300000 technical terms, the most in any language, but it is doubtful if any individual uses more than 60000. TEXT 12 People as they are Almost every nation has a reputation of some kind. The French are amorous, gay, fond of champagne; the Germans are dull, formal, efficient; the Americans are boastful, energetic, gregarious and vulgar. The English are cold, reserved, rather haughty people. The English don’t yell in the street, make love in public. They are steady, easy-going and fond of sport and animals. There are, however certain kinds of behavior, manners and customs which are peculiar to the nation. The English are a nation of stay-at-homes. There is no place like home, they say. «The Englishman’s home is his castle», - is a saying known all over the world; and it is true that English people prefer small houses perhaps with a small garden. The fire is the focus of the English home. What do other nations sit round? The answer is they don’t. They go out to cafes or sit round the cocktail bar. For the English it is the open fire, the toasting fork and the ceremony of English tea. What’s the difference between an American and a European really? There’s the rhythm of life of course. In Europe there are people who have lived in the same house and been in the job for twenty, thirty, forty years. That’s not the American way of life. They love change, they call it «the spirit of adventure», a spirit that they think is more characteristic of America than of Europe. There is a very interesting remark in a book by an English writer. He wrote: «We in England, and the French, the Germans, the Italians, the Russians, have all got one thing in common – we are descended from the men who stayed behind. In the States they are descended from the folk who moved away». And so they still like to «move away», to change homes and jobs. They seem to be constantly pulling down old and often quite beautiful houses or throwing away things merely because they are old. They have nonne of the Englishman’s sentimental love for things because they are old. However, any nation has its own peculiarities. The southerner differs from the northerner, the easterner differs from the westerner.
