Mrs Hammond was old and blind, but she was determined to do everything for herself. She even used to go for walks alone from her cottage once a day for exercise and fresh air, and found her way by touching things with her white stick. She learnt where everything was, so she never lost her way.

But then one day some men came and cut down some of the familiar pine trees at the side of one of the paths which she followed. When she reached that place that evening, she did not feel the trees with her stick, so she was in difficulties.

She stopped for a minute and listened, but she did not hear any other people, so she went ahead for a kilometre or two, and then she heard water beneath her.

" Water? " she said aloud, and paused. " Am I lost? I suppose so. I must be on a bridge, I suppose, and there must be a river under me. I've been told that there's a river in this part of the country, but I don't know its exact position. How am I going to get back to my cottage from here? "

All at once she heard a man's friendly voice near her. It said, " Excuse me, can I help you? "

" How kind of you! " Mrs Hammond answered. " Yes, please. I'm lost. Some of the trees which I follow when I go for my walk every evening had been removed today, and if I hadn't been lucky enough to come across you, I don't know what I'd have done. Can you please help me to get home? "

" Certainly, " the man answered. " Where do you live? "

Mrs Hammond told him, and they began walking. The man took Mrs Hammond to her cottage, and she invited him in and gave him some coffee and a piece of cake. She told the man how grateful she was that she had met him.

" Don't thank me, " he answered. " I want to thank you."

" Thank me? " Mrs Hammond said. " Whatever for? "

" Well, " the man answered quietly, " I was balanced on the edge of that bridge for ages in the dark, because I was trying to make up my mind to throw myself into the river and drown myself. But I'm not going to do it now."

Weddings are important in every country: here are different wedding customs in different countries. In Western countries, the bride’sdress - her wedding dress - is important. Sometimes it is the dress her mother, or even her grandmother, wore at her wedding.

Some people believe the bride should wear ‘something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue'. She may wear an old ringand will usually have new shoes. She may borrow something to wear from a friend - that will be 'something borrowed' -and the ring on her finger may have a blue jewel in it or some of her clothes may be blue.

Many married people in English-speaking countries wear rings to show that they are married. They wear these rings on the fourth finger of their left hand.

At the wedding, as soon as the man and woman are married, their friends often throw rice or very small pieces of paper (called confetti) over them. They believe this will bring them good luck and that they will have many children. The bride often carries flowers and after the wedding she throws them up in the air. Some people believe that the woman who catches them will be the next to marry and this is why she is lucky. The bride and groom, their friends and family then have a party, where they have food and drink. The bride and groom then go on holiday together. This holiday is called 'the honeymoon'.

THE CHURCH IN GREAT BRITAIN

The Church of England is a Protestant church and official state religion of England (although membership is not, of course, compulsory). The Queen is the Head of the Church of England and she, with the advice of the Prime Minister and others, appoints the senior members of the clergy - the archbishops, bishops and deans.

The Church is divided into two provinces -Canterbury and York - each with its own archbishop and the Archbishop of Canterbury is the most senior official in the Church of England. The two provinces are divided into a number of dioceses, each with its own bishop; and the dioceses are further split into parishes. There are 13, 250 parishes in England alone, and every parish has its own church, all except for the very smallest with its own priest or vicar. The Church of England does not yet allow women to become vicars. This is the cause of major argument raging in the Church at the moment, but it is possible that the situation will change within the next few years.

The Church of Scotland is recognized as the official religion of Scotland. It is a protestant church and is a Presbyterian organization. This means that there is no hierarchy of archbishops and bishops. The Church of Scotland is governed by its ministers (parish priests) and elders (elected representatives), all of whom are considered to hold equal rank. Women are allowed to become ministers in the Presbyterian church.

About 10 per cent of the population of Britain are Roman Catholics including more than one third of the population of Northern Ireland. Recent years have seen attempts to create some form of unity between the Catholic Church and the Church of England, but there are many problems, not least of which is that whereas the Church of England appears to be gradually accepting the idea of admitting women to the priesthood, this is totally unacceptable to the Roman Catholic Church.

To sum up: a recent unofficial survey indicated that approximately two-thirds of the population profess a belief in God (although not necessarily a Christian one). The statistics present a rather different picture however: 17 per cent of the adult population of Britain are practising members of a Christian church. This can be further broken down as follows: 13 per cent of the English, who include a wide mixture of all Christian faiths; 23 per cent of the Welsh, who are mainly Free Church (not officially recognized, e.g. Methodists, Baptists, the United Reform Church); 37 per cent of the Scottish, who are mainly Church of Scotland or Free Church; and 80 per cent of the Northern Irish, who are mainly Protestant and Roman Catholic, actually belong to a church.

The average Sunday attendance at Church of England services is only about 2 per cent of the population. So it is clear that only a minority of the British regularly practise the state religion. " Unofficial" religions such as Catholicism and the Free Churches have more regular adherents; and in some areas it is possible for non-Christian believers to out-number Christians.
