Ways to encourage young people to train for careers in science

Nowadays we frequently hear about the lack of students pursuing scientific careers. How can we demonstrate to the younger generation that science is a rewarding and satisfying field? In this essay I will discuss two methods that schools could employ to help persuade teenagers to consider further study in this area.

One possible approach would be to ensure that career advisors are on board by providing them with materials, training and even incentives for promoting science. While this would be fairly easy to implement superficially, a lot of information dates extremely quickly. In addition, generally speaking, career advisors have little background themselves in physics, chemistry and biology and therefore may not be able to drum up genuine enthusiasm.

A second tactic that schools might take would be to invite scientists to come to their school to talk about their work. What might prove difficult would be to secure the scientists themselves, as they are often extremely busy. It would also be crucial to enlist experts able to relate to adolescents or they might actually have an adverse effect.

Overall, I would say that the most effective measure would be to have guest speakers. Hearing an exciting story from the field is much more likely to influence career choice than some second-hand advice.

A SOCIAL BIOGRAPHY ESSAY

Social Biography Essay - Model answer

The sociological imagination is the notion that allows a person to understand the greater picture of oneself and one's role in society. C. Wright Mills writes, " The sociological imagination enables its possessor to understand the larger historical scene in terms of its meaning for the inner life and the external career of a variety of individuals. (Mills 1959, p. 3) In this essay, I will examine my own life from a sociologist perspective. I will look at my position as an individual in society and take a sociological glance at my future based on Mills' concept of the sociological imagination. In order to effectively due this, I must first give you my class background. From there, I will give an in depth look into the sociological imagination and conclude with a critical analysis of how these both relate to one another.

I grew up in a relatively small suburb just outside of Los Angeles in Southern California. The city, Manhattan Beach, is home to just over 30, 000 persons with a median household income of about $70, 000 dollars. The town is 89% white which, coupled with the relatively high median household income, is indicative of an upper-class neighborhood. Per square foot, it has some of the most expensive housing per square foot in all of California. Being a mere 3.88 square mile beach city and having a $3.8 billion assessed city valuation, the city is densely rich. Manhattan beach is also home to several expensive shopping boutiques and trendy coffee shops that attract a young, professional population. Many predict that Manhattan Beach will soon be the next Hollywood due to the newly constructed movie studios and the extravagant lifestyles of many residents. With its ever-growing upper class population, the city offers numerous opportunities to those who can afford living there.

My family clearly represents the quintessential, rich Manhattan Beach household. With a mother, a father, a brother, a sister, a dog, and a cat, we epitomize the stereotypical suburban family. As long as I can remember, my family has owned four cars, two homes, and a small business. Furthermore, my father is a top executive of a multi-million dollar company with the job and income security that allows my mother a comfortable housewife position. Since kindergarten, my siblings and I had attended private schools costing much more per year than a UC education. In high school, I founded my own chess club, played sports, received good notes, and worked as a tutor in various subjects. Today, I am attending a renowned university well recognized for its prestige as well as intense academics. While much of this may seem insignificant, it really gives a detailed look into my class background. This will be looked at in more depth more closely later in the essay but to understand myself in a sociological context, we must first grasp the theories behind it.

A DESCRIPTIVE ESSAY

More than many other types of essays, descriptive essays strive to create a deeply involved and vivid experience for the reader. Great descriptive essays achieve this affect not through facts and statistics but by using detailed observations and descriptions.

A descriptive essay is exactly what it sounds like. In this type of essay, you will be asked to describe something. Unlike the expository essay, this type of essay allows for much more artistic freedom as the main idea is in the reader’s mind.

The descriptive essay provides details about how something looks, feels, tastes, smells, makes one feel, or sounds. It can also describe what something is, or how something happened. These essays generally use a lot of sensory details. The essay could be a list-like description that provides point by point details. Or, it could function as a story, keeping the reader interested in the plot and theme of the event described.

Examples: A descriptive essay could describe...

· a tree in my backyard;

· a visit to the children's ward of a hospital;

· a hot fudge sundae;

· what an athlete did in order to make it to the Olympics.

What do you want to describe?

As you get started on your descriptive essay, it's important for you to identify exactly what you want to describe. Often, a descriptive essay will focus on portraying one of the following:

  • a person
  • a place
  • a memory
  • an experience
  • an object

Ultimately, whatever you can perceiveor experience can be the focus of your descriptive writing.

Why are you writing your descriptive essay?

It's a great creative exercise to sit down and simply describe what you observe. However, when writing a descriptive essay, you often have a particular reason for writing your description. Getting in touch with this reason can help you focus your description and imbue your language with a particular perspective or emotion.

Example: Imagine that you want to write a descriptive essay about your grandfather. You've chosen to write about your grandfather's physical appearance and the way that he interacts with people. However, rather than providing a general description of these aspects, you want to convey your admiration for his strength and kindness. This is your reason for writing the descriptive essay. To achieve this, you might focus one of your paragraphs on describing the roughness of his hands, roughness resulting from the labor of his work throughout his life, but you might also describe how he would hold your hands so gently with his rough hands when having a conversation with you or when taking a walk.

How should you write your description?

If there's one thing you should remember as you write your descriptive essay, it's the famous saying: show don't tell. But what's the difference between showing and telling?

Consider these two simple examples:

  • I grew tired after dinner.
  • As I leaned back and rested my head against the top of the chair, my eyelids began to feel heavy, and the edges of the empty plate in front of me blurred with the white tablecloth.

The first sentence tells readers that you grew tired after dinner. The second sentence shows readers that you grew tired. The most effective descriptive essays are loaded with such showing because they enable readers to imagine or experience something for themselves.

As you write your descriptive essay, the best way to create a vivid experience for your readers is to focus on the five senses.

  • sight
  • sound
  • smell
  • touch
  • taste

When you focus your descriptions on the senses, you provide vivid and specific details that showyour readers rather than tellyour readers what you are describing.
