LESSON THIRTY (30) THITIETH (30th) LESSON Leaving the hotel Part 1 Mr. Hum Sarah and the children are going to fly to Scotland this afternoon. Before I accepted the job, we had intended to go by train. It's a long way from here to Scotland but we thought we'd enjoy the journey. We thought we'd stop in Manchester, where we'd call on my youngest brother. However, all our plans have been changed now. Since I've got no time to waste, the family's going to Scotland without me. I'll stay here alone and look for a house. I'd rather not do it alone but I've no choice: I've got to do it myself. Michael Blake found their house himself, so I suppose it can be done. I'll stay in London from Monday to Friday and then go to the Blakes at the weekends. Either Mike will drive me round to look at houses or he'll lend me his car and I'll drive myself.
Part 2 Weather
Mr. Hunt The weather forecast hasn't been given yet, has it? Mrs. Hunt I don't think so. I haven't heard it yet. Mr. Hunt Turn the radio up, please. There'll probably be a report in a few minutes. It's almost one o'clock (1.00). Mrs. Hunt My hands are full: 1 can't turn it up. Mr. Hunt All right. I'll do it myself. This sounds like the end of a programme. Announcer You've been listening to 'Music for everyone'. And now here is a special message from our motoring unit. On the A5 in Buckinghamshire, where strong winds have blown several trees onto the road, driving is very dangerous. According to our reports, there have been several accidents: a man died when a tree fell and crushed his car. The accident happened at the junction of the A5 and the A43, about six miles north of Buckingham. Drivers are advised to avoid this area, since the traffic is very heavy and delays of up to thirty minutes are expected. And now here is the weather forecast for the next twenty-four hours until midday tomorrow. Rain will continue in all areas until late tonight but will die away gradually. Tomorrow will be sunny in the east; in the west there will be showers and bright periods. Temperatures will be between seventeen (17°C) and eighteen degrees Centigrade (18°C). That is, sixty-three (63°F) and sixty-seven degrees Fahrenheit (67°F).
Delays
Mrs. Hunt Isn't that terrible, Guy. Do you think it's safe to fly? Mr. Hunt If the planes are still flying, I'm sure it's safe. They never fly when they know there's any danger. Mrs. Hunt Perhaps we ought to phone the airport. Mr. Hunt Jane's already done that. Mrs. Hunt Did she think of that herself or did you suggest it? Mr. Hunt She did it herself. Mrs. Hunt What was she told? Mr. Hunt There have been no cancellations and no delays yet. Mrs. Hunt Yet? What does that mean? Mr. Hunt The planes have been taking off on time but if the bad weather continues some' delays are expected. Mrs. Hunt I do hope our flight won't be delayed.
The broken records
Mrs. Hunt Has everything been packed? Mr. Hunt Yes, I think so. The children have taken their suitcases downstairs. Mrs. Hunt Did they do it themselves? Mr. Hunt Simon carried his down himself. Jane asked the porter to carry hers down because she couldn't lift it herself. Mrs. Hunt How did Simon pack his records? Mr. Hunt I don't know. Here he is. You can ask him yourself. Mrs. Hunt How did you pack your records, Simon? Simon I didn't need to pack them. Mrs. Hunt Why? Simon I broke them. Mrs. Hunt How did you do that? Simon Oh, it was easy. I brought them into the room this morning. I put them in the middle of the bed, where I could see them. Then I went downstairs and when I came back I sat on them.
A telegram
Mr. Hunt Is everyone ready? Peter's waiting downstairs.He's parked his car outside the hotel, where he's not allowed to park, so we ought to hurry. Jane I hate leaving this place. I've really felt at home here. Mrs. Hunt Guy, have you paid the bill? Mr. Hunt Yes, I paid it a little while ago. It came to more than 1 thought it would. And while I was paying, this telegram was delivered. Mrs. Hunt Telegram? Who from? Mr. Hunt From your sister. Here... you can read it yourself. This is an era which can accurately be labelled as one of technological revolution with vital changes in all spheres of life of humanity. Great progress is being made in such essential fields as science, engineering, space and economy. Civilization has rapidly advanced and will continue to develop. Some of man's dreams and science fiction have come true. Just think of laser in medicine, genetic engineering and Internet development providing tele-medicine and educational multimedia that could reach far-away and remote areas. The life of humanity has changed beyond recognition. It cannot be denied, however, that this rapid industrial development is made at vast expense: depositsof natural resources are exhausted, the ecological balance of the planet is disturbed, some species1 of flora and fauna disappear. Progress can be blamed for all these environmental problems. To preserve Nature and keep the air and water clean, strict control is necessary. Numerous purifying systems for treatment2 of industrial wastes have been installed; measures have been taken to protect rivers and seas from oil wastes. Wildlife reservations, models of undisturbed nature, have developed all over the country.
Pollution The following discussion was held at Battersea County College in Great Britain. Interviewer: What do you think are the worst kinds of pollution? Steve: The noise and the exhaust of cars. It should be compulsory3 to have filters on exhausts. Julie: I think the noise of airports is much worse. I live on Battersea Bridge Road which is one of the noisiest roads and it doesn't bother me. I don't really notice it. Carol: We've got planes coming over our house every minute and I don't notice it any more. You get used to it. Interviewer: What do you think of clearing city centres of traffic and cleaning the air of big cities? How could that be accomplished? Marlin: City centres should be left only for pedestrians4 and all traffic should be banned. As to the enterprises which pour smoke out of their chimneys, they should be moved out. They endangerthe health of people. Interviewer: Judging by the statistics many industrial areas still have a lot of chemicals in the air. Does that worry you? I've never really thought about it. Over the years you grow accustomed to the smell and dirty air. The only time you notice how bad the air is, is after you've been away for a while. You start coughing like anything. Clean air in big cities is a vitalproblem. People probably die younger in the cities as they can get all sorts of lung cancer5 and things. There is one more factor in connection with air pollution that many people overlook. If you move out enterprises into remote areas you can spoil the countryside. There won't be any countryside left if all the factories are moved out to those areas. Interviewer: What's your attitude to wastes and recycling things? Julie: I'm in favour of recycling. Bottles, cans, industrial wastes can be recycled. Interviewer: Nature always recycles everything. Nothing goes to waste. Steve: With humanbeings the main idea is to get as much as you can out of something and then dumpthe rest. Interviewer: Are you concerned about pollution happening in other countries? Carrol: I feel I don't know enough about it. Sometimes you come across such information in the newspapers, but it's not enough. Steve: Yeah. They say aerosols are affecting the ozone layer which protects us from the sun and create the so-called " green house effect". We should be aware of this problem. Marlin: I've read that recently in Geneva there was a conference attended by environment ministers from more than 100 countries with the aim of fighting against global warming. Interviewer: Yes, you are right. We should think about future generations. Without co-operation at the international level, no doubt, deterioration of the environment will go on.
