THE ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER. Задание № 5. Выпишите из текста 4 предложения, содержащие предлоги to , of , for , on . . TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD

By M. Twain

(An Extract)

About midnight Joe awoke, and called the boys. The air was oppressive. The boys sat still round the fire, waiting. It was very dark. Presently there came a flash of lightning, by and by another came a little stronger. Then another. Then a flash turned night into day and showed three white frightened faces. A deep peal of thunder went rolling. The boys clung together in terror. It began to rain.

And now a heavy rain poured down. The boys cried out to each other, but they could hear nothing. However, one by one they crept under the tent, cold, frightened, and dripping wet. The storm rose higher and higher, and presently the sail tore loose from its fastenings. The boys seized each other’s hand and fled to the shelter of a great oak that stood upon the river bank.

Now the battle was at its highest. Every little while (через короткие промежутки времени) some big tree fell crashing. But at last the battle was done. The boys went back to camp. They found there that the big tree under which they had slept (спали), had been struck (было сломано) by the lightning. Everything in camp was drenched, the camp-fire as well. The boys were quite wet and cold. At last with great difficulty they made the fire burn again. They dried their boiled ham and had a feast, and after that they sat by the fire and spoke about their adventure until morning; they could not go to sleep, for there was not a dry spot anywhere around.

There was no joy in the little village that Saturday afternoon. The Harpers (семья Харпер) and aunt Polly’s family were dressed in mourning. The children had no heart (сердце не лежало к) to play. Becky Thatcher (Бекки Течер) came to the school-house yard feeling very melancholy.

CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS

By R. Kipling

(An Extract)

They never worked on Sundays, but shaved and washed themselves. Disco explained to Harvey the meaning of the sea map and showed him the "cod" places. There were many long talks on the schooner on stormy days, when they lay or sat in their cabins. Disco spoke of fishing voyages for whales; of great she-whales killed near their young. He told about the death agonies of these huge whales on the black seas and blood that rose forty feet in the air; of boats smashed to pieces – wonderful tales all true.

Long Jack liked ghost stories. He told them of hidden treasures of Fire Island that were watched by the spirits of Captain Kidd’s men; of ships that sailed in the fog straight over a town; Tom Platt told them about the man-of-war where he had been a sailor. He told about storms and cold, about weather so cold that two hundred men were busy night and day chopping the ice everywhere on the boat.

Tom Platt had no use for steams. He said it was a good invention in time of peace, but he waited hopefully for the day when sails would come back again on ten-thousand-ton ships.

Manuel’s talk was slow and gentle – all about pretty girls in Spain washing clothes in streams by moonlight. He told legends of heroes, and tales of strange dances or fights in the cold northern ports.

The cook usually did not take part in these conversations. He spoke only when it was absolutely necessary, but sometimes he would speak in broken English for an hour at a time (в течение целого часа без перерывы). Then he told them about his mother and her stories of life far to the south where water never froze. And he said that when he died, his soul would go to lie down on the warm white sand with palm-trees waving above. That seemed to the boys a very strange idea for a man who had never seen (никогда не видел) a palm-tree in his life.

There were days of fine weather, of fishing, hard work and excitement. Then the fog covered everything again, and they anchored, surrounded by the ringing of unseen bells. At such times there was not much fishing, but boat met boat from time to time in the fog and exchanged news.

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD

By Harper Lee

(An Extract)

When he was nearly thirteen, my brother Jem got his arm badly broken at the elbow. When it healed and Jem’s fears of never being able to play football were assuaged, he was seldom self-conscious about his injury. His left arm was somewhat shorter than his right; when he stood or walked, the back of his hand was at right angles to his body, his thumb parallel to his thigh. He couldn't have cared less, so long as he could pass and punt.

It was customary for the men in the family to remain on Simon’s homestead.

The tradition of living on the land remained unbroken until well into the twentieth century, when my father, Atticus Finch, went to Montgomery to read law, and his younger brother went to Boston to study medicine. Their sister Alexandra married a taciturn man who spent most of his time lying in a hammock by the river wondering if his trotlines were full.

When my father was admitted to the bar, he returned to Maycomb (город в штате Алабама) and began his practice. His first two clients were the last two persons hanged in the Maycomb jail.

During his first five years in Maycomb, Atticus practised economy more than anything. He liked Maycomb, he was born and bred there; he knew his people, they knew him, and because of Simon Finch’s industry, Atticus was related by blood or marriage to nearly every family in the town.

CAPTAINS CAURAGEOUS

By R. Kipling

(An Extract)

So the son, Harvey Cheyne, was wonderfully returned to his parents.

After strong emotion most people and all boys want to eat. Harvey ate, drank and told his parents about his adventures, and when he had a free hand, his mother was holding it. His voice was deep as a result of life in the open, salt air. His hands were rough and hard, and the smell of cod-fish hung round his rubber boots and blue jersey.

His father looked at him keenly. He was thinking that he now knew little about his son. But he remembered very well the spoilt youth who called his father “old man” and made his mother cry. This was a different boy, who looked at him with steady, clear eyes, and spoke in a tone of respect. There was something in his voice, too, which seemed to say that it was a new Harvey.

...Mr Cheyne knew that a man like Disco would not take money, and he also knew that no money could pay for what Disco had done (сделал). So he offered to take Dan on one of the ships that he owned and to make him a mate. Dan was so happy that he could not express his joy in words.

Then they went to Dan’s house to speak with his mother. She was a tall silent woman with the dim eyes of those who look long to sea for the return of their beloved. "I hate the sea," she said, "It took my father, my eldest brother, two nephews and my sister's husband. Could you love anything that took so much from you?"

She gave consent wearily.

Mrs Cheyne spoke to Manuel. He didn’t want any money. When Mrs Cheyne insisted, he said he would take five dollars because he wanted to buy something for a girl, and the rest of the money he asked her to give to the widows whose husbands had been lost at sea (погибли в море).

Mrs Cheyne did so, and Manuel, quite satisfied, went out to buy a handkerchief for one girl and to break the hearts of all the other girls.
