THEATRES, CONCERTS, FESTIVALS AND CINEMA

The theatre is mainly concentrated in London, where there are at least forty theatres functioning, and a successful play can continue to be shown for many months or even years. Outside London a few large towns have theatres in which are performed, generally for one week at a time, plays which take a trial run before opening in London.

Orchestral concerts are given regularly in London by several first-class orchestras which are based there. The largest provincial centers also maintain permanent orchestras, which give regular concerts. Seasons of opera are performed at the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden, in central London, and also of ballet by the Royal Ballet, “Festivals” of the arts take place in several towns, of which the best known is the annual International Festival of Music and Drama in Edinburgh.

From about 1930 until very recent times the cinema became very popular in Britain. More recently the rapid spread of television has brought a great change. In 1946 the average British person went to the cinema forty times in the year, but by 1966 the figure had fallen to six, and 1,500 cinemas were closed. Most films shown are from Hollywood, but some British films have won great international success. French and other foreign language films are usually shown with English sub-titles.

ENGLISH TRADITIONS

London has kept its old ceremonies and traditions to a greater extend than any other city in England. Most of these traditions have been kept up without interruption since the 13th century.

Foreigners coming to London are impressed by quite a number of ceremonies, which seem to be incompatible with the modern traffic and technical conditions of a highly developed country.

Uniforms are rather characteristic of this fact. When one sees the warders* at the Tower of London with their funny hats and unusual dresses with royal monograms, one feels carried back to the age of Queen Elizabeth I.

Even in the unromantic everyday life of English businessmen we can see the same formal traditions. In the City of London there may be seen a number of men in top-hats These are the bank messengers who had to put on these hats according to tradition.

English judges and advocated wear official black dresses and white wings, though wigs have not been used for two hundred years in other countries.

One of the most impressive and popular ceremonies is “Changing the Guard”*, which takes place at Buckingham Palace every day at 11.30 . The uniforms of the guards are extremely coloured – red tunics, blue trousers and bearskin caps.

Another formal display is the “Ceremony of Keys”* which takes place every night at 9.52 p.m. when the Chief Warder of the Tower of London lights a candle lantern and carrying the keys makes his way with the Escort to the gates of the Tower and locks them.

Strange as they may seem to a modern European or American, nobody in London sees anything remarkable in these old traditions which mix harmoniously with the city everyday life.

FOOTBALL IN ENGLAND

Football is considered to be the most popular game in England. One has only to go to the important matches to see this. Rich and poor, young and old, one can see them all there, shouting and cheering for one side or the other.

One of the most surprising things about football in England to a stranger is the great knowledge of the game which even the smallest boy seems to have. He can tell you the names of the players in most of the important teams, he has photographs of them and he knows the results of large numbers of matches. He will tell you whom he expects to win in such and such a match and his opinion is usually as valuable as that of men three or four times of his age.

Most schools in England take football seriously – much more seriously than nearly all European schools, where lessons are all important and games left for the private organizations. In England education is believed to be not only a matter of filling a boy’s mind with facts in the classroom: education also means character training. One of the best ways of character training is expected to be games, especially team games, where the boy has to learn to work with others for his team, instead of working for himself alone.

The school therefore organizes games and matches for its pupils. Football is a good team game, it is good exercise for the body, it needs skill and a quick brain, it is popular and it is cheap and, as a result, it is the school’s favourite game.

Now more and more omen and girls are playing football. There are already 300 women’s football clubs in Britain – that is about 6,000 players of all ages. There is a Women’s Football Association, and the teams compete with each other for an important prize called “The Pony Cup”.

THE MIDLANDS*

England is an industrial country. It was the first country in the world to become industrialized and now its industry is highly developed and the output of industrial goods is larger than is needed for home use.

The heart of England’s industry is the Midlands. The textile and metal-working industries have grown up there in and near the iron, ore and coal-mining districts. It is also extremely important that the Midlands have good communication with the rest of the country. It is the richest region of Britain and the most densely populated. A list of industrial products made in the Midlands is almost endless, more than 1,500 articles are manufactured there – surgical instruments, giant machinery, razors, pins, pearl buttons, etc. The Midlands are one of the great hunting centres of England. It is here that the famous Wedgwood* porcelain has been produced for centuries.

East Anglia comprises Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex*. Here the ancient Britons were displaced by West and East Saxons. This fact is mentioned in Anglo-Saxon Chronicle* as far back as 675 A.D. They gave England her name: Angle-land. East Anglia is all flat; its ancient seaports are within easy reach of the Continent. Flanders* are opposite, across the water, and there is a definite likeness between Flemish lowlands and this side of Britain. The windmills, the beautiful fields of tulips in spring remind of Holland. Many rivers, streams and canals of the region attract tourists and painters. East Anglia is noted for old farmsteads and fruit growing. Excellent strawberries, gooseberries and black currants come from here to the London market daily and houses for export.

Essex is sometimes called London dormitory, as lots of people working in London prefer to live there.
