THE ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER

By M. Twain

(An Extract)

Aunt Polly looked confused a moment. Then she wanted to say something kind, but she did not wish to show that she was in the wrong (она была неправа). Tom knew that in her heart aunt Polly was on her knees before him. He knew that she was looking at him with eyes full of tears. But she kept silence. So Tom sat in a corner and thought he was very unhappy because nobody loved him. At last he got up, went out and down the street. He came to a lonely spot on the river and sat there, thinking his sad thoughts. He imagined himself brought home from the river, dead, with his hair all wet, his poor hands still forever. Then his aunt would cry over him, she would wish he had not died (она хотела бы, чтобы он был жив (не умер бы)). She would promise never to punish him again. But he would lie there cold and white – Tom felt that his own tears ran down his nose.

About half past nine or ten o'clock he came back to the house where his beautiful unknown lived. He listened a moment but heard nothing. He saw the light of a candle in one of the windows. Was she there? He climbed the fence and approached the window. He stood for a long time under it, sighing, then lay down on the ground. He lay on his back and her flower was in his hands. And thus he would die, alone in the world with no friend near him. In the morning she would see him and perhaps drop some tears and pity him.

Presently somebody opened the window; it was a servant. Tom heard her loud voice, and suddenly she poured out a jug of water on Tom. The poor hero was dripping wet. He sprang up, climbed over the fence, and ran home.

Not long after Tom all undressed for bed, was looking at his wet clothes by the light of a candle. Sid woke up, and saw him but held his tongue, for there was danger in Tom’s eyes.

CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS

By R. Kipling

(An Extract)

Harvey Cheyne, a boy of 15, was the spoilt son of a millionaire. He, of course, considered himself a very important person.

When the story opens, we find Harvey and his mother on a steamer that is going to Europe. Harvey is to continue his education in France. All the passengers on the steamer knew that Harvey’s father was a millionaire, because Harvey boasted so much about it.

The men on the boat smoked cigars, and Harvey thought that, if he smoked too, it would make him much more important in the eyes of the grown-up people. One day he smoked a very strong cigar; as a result, he became sick and dizzy and fell overboard into the ocean. But he wasn’t drowned. The fishing schooner “We’re Here” picked him out of the water some distance from the large steamer and took him on board.

There Harvey, for the first time in his life, learned how to do useful work, and even to like it.

How long everything lasted Harvey could not remember. Several voices talked at once. It seemed to him he was dropped into a dark hole, where men in oilskins gave him a hot drink, and took off his clothes. Then he fell asleep.

When he awoke, he listened for the first breakfast-bell (звонок к завтраку) on the steamer, wondering why his state-room had become so small. Turning, he saw that he was in a very small, narrow cabin lit by a lamp that hung on the wall. Near him, in a corner of the cabin, stood a three-cornered table, and a little farther an iron stove. Behind the stove sat a boy about his own age, with a red face and a pair of bright grey eyes. He was dressed in a blue jersey and high rubber boots. Several pairs of the same sort of boots, an old cap, and some worn-out woollen socks lay on the floor, and black and yellow oilskins were hanging beside the bunks. The cabin smelled of fried fish, oilskins, tobacco and, most of all, salt water.

GARM – A GOSTAGE (Гарм-заложник)

By R. Kipling

(An Extract)

I wanted to go out in the evening. But when it became dark and the dog walked through the empty house like a child trying not to cry, I felt I couldn't leave him alone that first evening. So we had dinner at home, all three, Vixen (Виксен, имя собаки) on one side and the stranger-dog on the other, Vixen watched his every mouthful and said very clearly what she thought of his table manners, which were much better than hers.

It was Vixen’s custom, till the weather became hot, to sleep in my bed, her head on the pillow like a human being. This night she hurried to her place in the bed. Then she looked at the stranger-dog, who was lying on a mat in a helpless, hopeless manner, all four feet stretched out, sighing heavily.

Vixen put her head on the pillow; and began her usual sing-song (поскуливать) before sleep. The stranger-dog came quietly towards me. I put out my hand and he licked it. At once my hand was between Vixen’s teeth, it meant that if I paid any more attention to the stranger, she would bite. I seized her with my left hand, shook her, and said:

"Vixen, if you do that again, I shall put you into the verandah. Now remember!"

She understood perfectly, but the minute I let her go she took my right hand into her mouth again and waited with her ears back ready to bite. The big dog’s tail beat the floor, as if to say that she wanted to make peace. I seized Vixen a second time, lifted her out of the bed, and set her out in the verandah, and closed the door.

First she howled. Then she used bad language (она стала ругаться) not to me, but to the stranger-dog. Then she ran round the house, trying to open every door. Then she went to the stables and barked as if someone were stealing the horses, which was an old trick of hers. At last she returned, and her bark said, “I’ll be good! Let me in and I’ll be good.”

CAPTAINS CAURAGEOUS

By R.Kipling

(An Extract)

As he was a boy, Harvey did not worry his head with too much thinking. He was sorry for his mother, and often wanted very much to see her and to tell her of his wonderful new life. Otherwise he did not think too much about her suffering and how she was bearing the great shock of his death, for there was no doubt she thought him to be dead.

He was now a part of the life on the schooner “We’re Here”. He had his place at the table and his own bunk; and he took part in the long talks on stormy days when fishing could not be done. The others were ready to listen to what they called his "fairy tales" of his life on shore.

Soon he learned how to take the position of the sun, find the latitude and jump down into the cabin and write it down. Then, what a wonderful thing it was to run up and be able to tell the crew the position of the schooner for that day!

...For days they worked in fog – Harvey at the bell. But the thick fog did not lift, and the fish were biting. So Harvey went out in the fishing boat with Tom. They rowed back to the schooner guided by the bell and Tom’s instinct.

A few days later he was out on the sea with Manuel at a place where they thought it was forty fathoms to the bottom. But the anchor could not find anything. Harvey was awfully afraid and thought that his last touch with earth was lost.

Another time they sailed through the fog, and this time the hair on Harvey's head stood up when he went out in Manuel’s boat. A whiteness moved in the whiteness of the fog with a breath like the breath of a grave, and there was a great noise. He hid in the bottom of the boat while Manuel laughed.
