A Theatre-Goer

I am a great theatre-goer. I love theatre very much. I try to see the most interesting performances that are on at our theatres. I am fond of the Alexandrinsky Drama theatre and the Opera House. I also try not to miss the performances of Moscow theatres, the Maly and the Art Theatre in particular. These theatres are famous for their excellent companies and wonderful acting. I usually go to the evening performances, and I try to buy tickets in advance. I like to have good seats in the stalls, or in the dress-circle. From these seats one gets a good view of the stage. I am fond of ballet. My favourite ballet is “The Swan Lake.” It has a long run and is always a greatsuccess with the public. Everything is magnificent there: the music and the dancing. The leading part dancers are brilliant beyond all doubts, and when the final curtain falls, they receive many curtain calls.

Task 1 Answer the following questions:

Task 2 Using the following pattern, prepare a nice talk about how you went to the theatre the other day:

I am a great theatre-goer and (I am not much of a theatre-goer, but) I try to see the best performances that are on at our theatres. Such a large cultural centre as St. Petersburg gives a wide choice to theatre-going public. If one is interested in......., one can visit the...... or......; if you prefer......, you can go to the...... or the....... Tickets can be bought at the box-office of the theatre or at one of the theatre-agencies; you can buy them on the day of the performance or in advance.

The other day I did not feel like working. I rang up my friend and said, “What about going to the theatre tonight? ” My friend, who is a great theatre-goer, liked the idea. In an hour and a half we met in Nevsky Prospect.

Wewere planning to go to the......, but when we came there, we found out that the house was sold out, and we made up our mind to go to the...... because....... We were lucky. We bought two seats in the stalls, so we had a very good view of tie stage.

The play was excellent, it was a great success with the public. The actors were brilliant beyond all doubts, and when the final curtain fell, they received many curtain jails.

It was a very pleasant evening.

 

Ex 4 Learn the following dialogue:

A: Is that you, Ann? How are you?

В: Very well, thanks. I hope you are fine, too?

A: Yes, thank you. I am ringing you up to tell you that we – my brother and I – are going to the theatre in a week or so. Would you like to join us? I would like you to go very much.

B: With great pleasure, Mary. What theatre are you going to?

A: To the Drama Theatre to see Gogol’s “Inspector-General.” I haven’t yet seen it. It’s being staged by the Moscow Art Theatre and there’s a fine cast with N in the main part.

B: Wonderful! I haven’t seen it either. I shall be looking forward to a pleasant evening. Oh, by the way, will it be an evening performance or a matinee?

A: An evening performance. We want to go to the first night. I’ll ring you up as soon as we get the tickets.

B: Fine.
