They wanted only some milk and sandwiches

Two Americans were traveling in Spain. One morning they came into a little restaurant for lunch. They wanted some milk and sand­wiches but the waiter did not know English and could not understand them. One of the Americans took a piece of paper and began to draw a cow and point to the tablecloth. The waiter smiled, clapped the American on his shoulder and ran out.

Triumphantly he put on the tablecloth in front of the men two tickets for a bull-fight.

Ex 9 Translate the instruction for foreign language learners which contains 10 “general” rules and methods in studying a foreign language. Begin with the words«It is necessary…»:

1. заниматься регулярно. Лучше понемногу ежедневно, чем раз в неделю помногу часов;

2. иметь при себе компактно записанные текущие материалы: слова, определения, правила, тексты;

3. разнообразить форму занятий: чтение, потом слушание, потом грамматика, потом письменные упражнения и т.д.;

4. учить слова в контексте, а не по списку;

5. читать как можно больше, даже если текст плохо воспринимается;

6. учить как можно больше наизусть;

7. овладеть набором готовых выражений типа: «следует сказать», «обращаю внимание», «по-моему мнению», «имеет смысл», «дайте минуту подумать» - все это нужно для того, чтобы выиграть время для обдумывания очередной фразы;

8. язык – это крепость, и штурмовать ее надо со всех сторон и всеми средствами. Поэтому любая практика – основа успеха;

9. не боятся ошибок. На них учатся! Излишняя скромность здесь не помогает, а некая самоуверенность не помешает;

10. использовать время, которое обычно безнадежно пропадает: поездки в городском транспорте, ожидание приема у врача и т.д.

Таким образом можно сказать – «Учись плавать, плавая, а говорить, говоря.»

Act of ravelers

The act of ravelers can be described by a number of synonyms which differ by various implications. They all describe the act of going from one place to another, but differ by the length of time taken by that act, by its purpose, destination or by the method of ravelers.

travel: the act of ravelers, esp. a long one in distant or foreign places, either for the purpose of discovering something new or in search of pleasure and adventure; e. g. He is writing a book about his travels in Africa.

journey: the act of going from one place to another, usually taking a rather long time; e. g. It’s a three days’ journey by train.

voyage: a rather long journey, esp. by water or air; e. g. The idea of an Atlantic voyage terrified her: she was sure to be seasick, all the time.

trip: a journey, an excursion, freq. a brief one, made by land or water; e. g. Did you enjoy your week-end trip to the seaside?

tour: a journey in which a short stay is made at a num­ber of places (usu. with the view of sightseeing), the travel­ler finally returning to the place from which he had started; e. g. On our Southern-England tour we visited Windsor, Ox­ford, Cambridge, Stratford-on-Avon and then came back to London.

cruise: a sea voyage from port to port, esp. a plea­sure trip; e. g. The Mediterranean cruise promised many in­teresting impressions.

hitch-hiking: ravelers by getting free rides in passing automobiles and walking between rides; e. g. Hitch-hiking is a comparatively new way of ravelers which gives one a chance to see much without spending anything.

Different means of travel

Alex: Personally I hate seeing people off. I prefer being seen off myself. I’m extremely fond of traveling and feel terribly envious of any friend who is going anywhere. I can’t help feeling I should so much like to be in his place.

Bert: But what method of ravelers do you prefer?

Alex: For me there is nothing like travel by air; it is more comfortable, more convenient and of course far quicker than any other method. There is none of the dust and dirt of a railway or car journey, none of the trouble of changing from train to steamer and then to another train. Besides, flying is a thrilling thing. Don’t you agree?

Bert: I think I should like to say a word or two for trains. With a train you have speed, comfort and pleasure combined. From the comfortable corner seat of a railway carriage you have a splendid view of the whole countryside. If you are hungry, you can have a meal in the dining-car; and if the journey is a long one you can have a wonderful bed in a sleeper. Besides, do you know any place that’s more interesting than a big railway-station? There is the movement, the excitement, the gaiety of people going away or waiting to meet friends. There are the shouts of the porters as they pull luggage along the platforms to the waiting trains, the crowd at the booking-office getting tickets, the hungry and thirsty ones hurrying to the refreshment rooms before the train starts. No, really! Do you know a more exciting place than a big railway-station?

Cecil: I do.

Alex: And that is?

Cecil: A big sea port. For me there is no travel so fine as by boat. I love to feel the deck of the boat under my feet, to see the rise and fall of the waves, to feel the fresh sea with blowing in my face and hear the cry of the sea-gulls. And what excitement, too, there is in coming into the harbour and seeing round us all the ships, steamers, cargo-ships, sailing ships, rowing boats.

Alex: Well, I suppose that’s all right for those that like it, but not for me. I’m always seasick, especially when the sea is a little bit rough.

Bert: I’ve heard that a good cure for seasickness is a small piece of dry bread.

Alex: Maybe; but I think a better cure is a large piece of dry land.

David: Well, you may say what you like about airplane flights, sea voyages, railway journeys or tours by car, but give me a walking tour any time. What does the motorist see of the country? But the walker leaves the dull broad highway and goes along little winding lanes where cars can’t go. He takes mountain paths through the heather, he wanders by the side of quiet lakes and through the shade of woods. He sees the real country, the wild flowers, the young birds in their nests, the deer in the forest; he feels the quietness and calm of nature. And besides, you are saving your railway fare ravelers on foot. No one can deny that walking is the cheapest method of ravelers. So I say: a walking tour for me.

B: Oh no, it isn’t. It travels only short distances.

A: What’s a suburban train? It’s not a long-dis­tance one, is it?

B: Well, a suburban train is a local train, of course. But not every local train can be called a subur­ban one. As a matter of fact, suburban trains connect large cities with the suburbs.

Ex 3 Read the task and do exercises.

A friend of yours is coming to your country for a week’s holiday. Give him/ her some advice about how to travel che­aply, and what to do when he/she arrives.

1) Make a list of all the expressions you know which can be used to give advice.

2) Read the following passage to see if the expressions you listed occur.

If you want to get here cheaply, do go round a few travel agents, as they sometimes offer cheap flights, but what­ever you do, don’t book a seat on a sche­duled flight — they are always very ex­pensive. If I were you, I’d take the ferry because it’s very cheap and reasonably fast. I wouldn’t take the hovercraft, it can be very rough at this time of year and you might get delayed.

As far as things to bring with you are concerned, the most essential is your pas­sport. If you have any other form of iden­tification, it is a good idea to bring boththis and your passport In case you lose either of them. You ought to bring some English currency with you as well as tra­veller’s checks. It is best not to bring too much cash because if you lose that you can’t get it back whereas with travel­ler’s checks you can. By the way, you’ll probably find it’s well worthwhile getting a student card, because you’ll be able to get all sorts of discounts, particularly when it comes to ravelers.

There’s just one other thing — you’d better remember to get in touch with us when you are over here, or we’ll be very upset!

There are different kinds of trains: passenger trains, mail trains and goods trains. ______ carry mail, or post, that is letters, newspapers, magazines. ______ carry goods. ______ carry passengers. Mail trains and passenger trains are usually combined: they have carriages for passengers and a special carriage or two for mail.

To avoid this, he suggested that each hiker wear tiny bells on their clothing to warn the bears of their presence.

One tourist asked, «How do you iden­tify bear droppings? »

«Oh that’s easy, » the guide explained, «I ones with all the tiny bells in them! »

A tourists guide was talking with a group of school kids at Yellowstone park when one of the kids asked him if he had ever came face-to-face with a wolf.

«Yes, I came face to face with a wolf once. And as luck would have it, I was alone and without a weapon.»

«What did you do? » the little girl asked.

«What could I do? First, I tried look­ing him straight in the eyes but he slowly came toward me. I moved back, but he kept coming nearer and nearer. I had tothink fast.»

«How did you get away? »

«As a last resort, I just turned around and walked quickly to the next cage.»

Two tourists were driving through Louisiana. As they were approaching Natchitoches, they started arguing about the pronunciation of the town. They ar­gued back and forth until they stopped for lunch. As they stood at the counter, one tourist asked the employee, «Before we order, could you please settle an argu­ment for us? Would you please pronounce where we are... very slowly? »

The girl leaned over the counter and said, «Burrrrrrrr, gerrrrrrr, Kiiiiing.»

«Look, guide, here are some lion tracks.»

«Good. You see where they go and I’ll find out where they came from.»

I have no time to lose

An energetic American tourist had come to visit the Warwick Castle in England. When the doorkeeper made his appearance, the American was studying his guide-book.

- Tell me, - the American said to the caretaker, - have you that famous vase still here? (shows its photo in the guide-book).

- Yes, sir, - was the reply.

- And the table that costs 10.000 dollars?

- Yes, sir.

- And have you still that portrait of Charles I by Vandyke?

- Oh yes, sir, - said the doorkeeper, - they are all here. Won’t you come in and see them?

- No, I won’t, I have no time to lose, - replied the visitor. – As they are here right enough and I have seen them in my guide-book I can go on visiting other castles and museums. Good bye – and he hurried away.

Last summer Nick spent his holidays in the Crimea. He went there by plane. He booked his ticket in advance. He rang up the air-travel booking office and reserved a seat for the fifteenth of July. “Will you come for your ticket yourself or do you want it delivered? ” asked the booking-office clerk. “I’d like my ticket delivered, please, ” said Nick, because he did not want to waste his time going to the booking office and standing in a queue.

The plane to Yalta took off at 9 a.m., but he had to be at the airport an hour before to register his ticket. His plane was TU-134. It is a comfortable modern plane. Nick’s seat was near the porthole and he could see how they took off in St. Petersburg and landed in Yalta. They were flying at a height of six thousand meters, so Nick could see only clouds through the porthole. The hostess offered the passengers some snacks and soft drinks. The flight was very pleasant. It took Nick only three hours to get to Yalta.

The way back wasn’t so pleasant. Nick could not get a ticket for a plane. He had to stand in a long queue to get a ticket for a train. When at last his turn came, he said to the booking-office clerk: “Please, I want a ticket to St. Petersburg for the fourth of August.” “I am sorry, ” said the booking-office clerk, “there are no tickets for a through train to St. Petersburg. I could give you an upper berth on a train to Moscow, and in Moscow you will have a changing.” Nick thought a little. “Oh well, that’s all right, ” he said, “give me a ticket for the Moscow train. After all, there are a lot of trains going from Moscow to St. Petersburg every day, so I hope I will have no problems punching the ticket.”

He was right. When he arrived in Moscow, he consulted the time-table and saw that there were ten trains to St. Petersburg. It did not take him long to punch his ticket. He just had time to drop into a bar and have a snack before his train started. The train was comfortable. Nick had a lower berth in a separate compartment. In the morning he was in St. Petersburg.
