Nora: Don’t speak too soon. There’s a nasty looking cloud just coming up behind you.

Harry: Oh, that cloud isn’t big enough to do any harm.

Robert: What have we got to eat, Mum?

Nora: Don’t worry, Robert. I’ve got enough food here for a dozen people.

Harry: Don’t be too quick about spreading the table-cloth, Nora, I felt a spot of rain.

Nora: Oh, dear, what did I tell you! It’s coming on to pour.

Robert: We’d better run for it.

Nora: Where to? There’s no shelter in sight.

Robert: What about that pub we came past?

Nora: It’s much too far away, look, there’s a barn over there – we’d better had for that.

The Weather

Foreigners are often amused that the English spend so much time discussing the weather. The reason for this is not simply that our weather is interesting and variable, but that the English are reluctant to converse about personal matters with people who are not friends. Mentioning the weather can be a useful and inoffensive way of starting a conversation with a stranger at a bus-stop or in a train.

(i)

A Fairly mild for the time of year.

В Yes. Quite different from the forecast.

A They1 say we're in for snow.2

В Let's hope it keeps fine for the weekend.

A It seems to be clearing up.

B It makes a change, doesn't it?

A Apparently it's going to turn colder.

B Still, another month should see us through the worst of it.1

(iii)

A Nice and bright this morning.

B Yes. Much better than yesterday.

A The wind'll probably get up later.

B As long as it doesn't rain.1

1 as long аs it doesn't rain: I don't mind what happens provided it doesn’t rain

(iv)

B A big improvement on what we've been having.
